Alterations

Can anyone provide instructions on how to alter an empire-waisted jacket for a large bust? The pattern doesn't have an alteration line. I am undecided if I should add the length to the bottom or if I should add my own alteration line and lenghten the pattern at the bust apex.

I think it may be easier to find the pattern in your correct bust size.....?

Most patterns are designed for a "B" cup bra size. I'm assuming you need to add more fullness over the breasts to accomodate a cup size greater than a "B"?

This is a tough question to answer simply. There are a lot of variables to consider; first and foremost how much "ease" has been factored into the pattern. Have they given you a point of bust dot on the pattern pieces for the front of the jacket? (they used to!). If they have, you can measure from the side seam to the center front mark over the point of bust mark and jot it down. Do the same thing for the back piece(s) and jot that down, too. Add the numbers and subtract the bust size for the pattern size you're making. The answer is the amount of "ease". Measure the over the point of bust (starting at the side seam and measuring to the centre front) on the body the jacket is to be made for. Do the same thing for the back. Compare the numbers to arrive at the amount you have to add to the pieces. Slash to the point of bust on the pieces and spread them the amount required.

It's not an easy operation; and cup size makes all the difference in the world when making a fitted garment. You can have a size 8 frame, but if you have a full busline the circumference measurement can dictate a size 14! the point is, you have to know WHERE to add the extra and how to measure for it.

I could show you how to do what you want to do, but I am really struggling to convey it to with words. Maybe someone else you link to more visual information to help you...

Thanks everyone. Yes I'm aware now of what hvac guys can do to the ductwork, we just worked out how to move 6 other stacks, some returns, some supplies that were all housed in the load bearing wall we are removing! I am happy to let this one stay in the same bay and just decide up or down. I live where its cold in winter & hot in summer. I'm leaning towards the toekick, aesthetically I think its better and sounds like many of you have it and its fine. Do I need the cabinet maker to cut a hole in the toekick or does this all get worked out by the GC/hvac guys after cabinet install?

You can see the "Clintwood" at https://tmvavra.com/product/the-clintwood/ It's odd that an architect would call it a "Craftsman design". To me it's a Cape Cod but with the following un-cape-like features tacked on: "poorman's" classical cornice returns, fake doghouse dormers, a little portico and nested shallow gables. It doesn't appear that any standard builder's feature is missing. All of that would need to go if its to be a mountain house and by mountain I assume its snow country. I would try pulling the main roof forward to align with the wall of the garage to create a large front porch and face the gable over the garage to the side over the doors to avoid dumping snow on the driveway. It might not work but it would be a good design excercise in keeping the roof big and simple. If you want additional space on the second floor, add a substantial dormer but not for curb appeal. It might even look more like a Craftsman.

Good questions.. I would prefer something a little boho fun .. i.e. not matching the denim. I have note that most think it should match the denim and I may land there if I do alter the dress.. but i def lean boho fun for a poolside/patio/bbq kind of dress. Prickly, I couldn't put my finger on WHY i didn't want ties at the shoulder .. but you made it clear to me. I am not comfortable with frilly in that location-- I already have broad shoulders and I am not currently friends with my neck. I would just rather not have something drawing attention there. Lyfia I was open to a halter (not my favorite style) mainly because when I was a kid and tube tops were in style, they often had a halter top.. i.e. strings coming from the middle that tied behind the neck. If I did a halterish style I wouldn't have both straps from from the center .. but still, I get your point about straps working better than halter. And no, no need for bra strap coverage. I would wear a strapless bra. Thanks for the thoughtful suggestions and feedback. I wanted to adapt this dress in place of shopping for others .. but based on feedback and advice here, I did go shop for/order other dresses to try... if they work out, I may just leave the dress as is but wear a boho scarf in my hair :)

You sure can. Whatever your cactus timing is now, you can change it. You start 6-8 weeks before when you want them to start blooming. Increase night darkness hours to 13-14 hours, bright light during the sun hours. Keep the temps between 55-65. The darkness and temps trigger the bud set.

Frankly I would choose another style pattern. A large bust and empire line is not a good combination because the front will never hang straight and hang out like a pregnancy dress. I have large busted relatives I learned this fact and never saw them in an empire line anything unless they were pregnant.

Perhaps you HAVE such a jacket that you can measure by, or go to the store and find one then measure it. Transfer the measurements to the pattern. Salena
