Those are more of the settings on the camera. Either the twilight or the backlight option can make a photo taken in pure darkness, light like taken in the day. Standard Scene modes include Beach, High Sensitivity, Landscape, Snow, Soft Snap, Twilight, Twilight Portrait, Fireworks, Smile Shutter, and Underwater. The Sony W170 Menu system gives you access to Twilight, Beach, Snow, Fireworks, and Underwater. The others are on the Mode dial. I laughed so hard using the creative effects to photos after you shoot using any of 10 editing functions, including: Trimming, Red-Eye adjustment, Soft Focus filter, Unsharp Mask, Cross filter, Partial Color filter, Fish-eye filter, Retro, Radial Blur and Happy Face (really funny). If you'll cut on it, butcher block. Or laminate. ;) I occasionally cut a slice of apple or two on my old stuff, but I hated it and wanted to rip it out. Seriously, don't cut on the counters. Keep a large cutting board stationed near where you prep. As Dianalo mentioned, it's bad on your knives. It dulls them, which leads to more cuts on fingers because a dull knife is a dangerous knife. Given your list, I recommend wood. Thought about that at all? Not shiny, usually not modern, can be rustic, casual, cozy, and not speckled. I have a black walnut island top. I LOVE it. An architect will help you with design ideas, can curate material, fixture and finish choices based on your tastes and can oversee the work being done by the contractor to ensure that everything is done properly, up to code, and according to design. The average homeowner is not equipped to adequately oversee a contractor's work. I've had so many clients come to me after a botched renovation because they didn't understand the contractor was taking short cuts and it cost them thousands more to fix.
