My DH got me a Fiskars rotary cutter/ruler in one several years ago. I did not like it at first because it was different. But the more I used it the more I love it. It does not slip as easily as a regular ruler, and it is completely safe for the fingers and easy on the wrist. It doesn't seem to have a great following, but I think that is because it is different. I started out using it for cutting strips, but have done all my cutting on it now for a number of years and can cut pieces all the way down to 1"sq. It is my main ruler/cutter now. Well, I posed the question earlier but had to wait awhile before I could come back to list my rulers. You will see that I like rulers! It seems if I have a coupon or they are on sale and I don't see anything else I need, I get a ruler! LOL Those that I use all the time are a 6" square, 12 1/2" square, and one that is 8 1/2 x 24". I could not do without those. I have a 4 1/2 x 4 1/2" and a 1 x 6" and almost never use those. My new favorite is the X-Block Ruler. I have 2 so far and I love them to the point that I am starting to teach a workshop using them. I also like the Square in a Square but haven't used it in quite awhile. I just found out that two of my rulers are still sealed in the package. I'll have to try them out: Easy Circle Cut and Clearview Triangle. I bought Kaye Wood's 5, 6, and 8 Starmaker Rulers years ago and am still very interested in them but must admit I haven't made an entire project using them yet. I'll put it on my "to do" list now that I thought of it. I have what is called an Handi-Square and Is it Square Tool. I find those confusing and don't use them. I have a Fons & Porter 60 degree diamonds and Half & Quater Ruler, a Mini Quilters Rule, and a Quilt in a Day Ruler, 8 inch Bias Square, Easy Six, and what I call a slit ruler where you can drop your rotary cutter into the ruler and cut stips. I never seem to be able to cut well in the size the slit is - otherwise I would use that one more often because the idea is good. Isn't it amazing all the cutting/ruler tools that are out there? I don't know that I need any more though until I manage to use those that I have. LOL I like the sandpaper dots, too, so the ruler doesn't slide. I have tried those, felt dots, and even velcro. Hi Sherri! I use a mat and rotary cutter by Fiskars. (gray and orange)I like them just fine, and the price was within my budget. I bought the mat and cutter and a clear 24" ruler together in a pkg. at Joann's Fabrics, and used a coupon. I also bought a Fiskars larger mat (the larger the better for cutting large cuts of fabric) it is I think 22 x 36..so I can cut a whole yard at a time. I got it at Walmart for $25. (Walmart is better priced than Joann's) I use a 45mm rotary tool, and that works fine for me for cutting cottons and denims. I would also suggest you buy the kind of rotary cutter that has a retractable blade...you press a button and the blade goes inside the cover on the cutter...I wouldn't buy one without this feature. I think they run around $10 at Walmart. I also have some smaller mats made by Olfa, they are green. They seem a bit thicker than the Fiskars, and they work fine also. So far, with my limited experience, 1. ale (chilling, in the fridge, for when I get really frustrated!) 2. soothing music (to postpone the moment of frustration) 3. answering machine 4. seam ripper 5. pencil, paper, and calculator 6. measuring tape 7. scissors 8. magnetic needle holder & picker upper 9. needles clue (as in a having a clue about what I am trying to do & not changing my mind or losing track ten times midstream) I consider this list to be priceless, as #10 is hard to come by.
