New Scrapbooker! Any Tips?

I have just begun scrapbooking over the summer. I enjoy it but I am not very creative. Do you have any tips that could help me get new ideas for pages?

Hi Kim, Like you I'm fairly new to scrapbooking but this past weekend a friend of mine talked me into going to a workshop at a local scrapbooking store. It was saturday night from 5p.m to 11p.m. we had a great time and everyone was extremely helpful I got all kinds of new ideas, and I got a lot done. I got hooked so I think you should try that.

Yes, it is a cane begonia which can reach two feet in height. At Three inches I wouldn't be in a hurry to use a lot of fertilizer, you might choose one which has a larger first number, which is nitrogen, good for growth, and dilute further the recommendation on the label of the product. But for such a small plant the first thing is to put it in a place with good light because that is important for all canes and try not to overwater such a small plant.

New Steam Shower - Any Planning Tips?

Yup, 2" per foot for the ceiling... ...porcelain over natural stone... ...and for the generator, different generators can be placed in diffeent areas. Some need to be co-located near the shower, others can be 10, 20, or 50 feet away. The generator also needs to be sized for both the physical size of the steam shower and the thermal characteristics of the six sides of the cube that make up the shower. You;ll find info on most manufacturer's websites. You want a VAPORPROOF membrane...not just waterproof, but vaporproof...behind the tile on all six sides of the shower cube. And all plumbing penetrations should be sealed to the membrane. You want your lights to be vaporproof too. You usually won't have a vent fan within a steam shower, it'll be located just outside the shower. Were you to have a fan within the steam shower, steam vapor drive can do nasty things.

When you measure, add at least 10% to the amount to account for things like irregular cuts, pattern matching, mistakes, later repairs and so forth. I would actually go a bit more -- when I did my FR with the 10% extra tiles, I ended up with only 2.5 tiles and some smaller scraps left over! Brands -- I think that Supreme Elite, Mannington Adura, Congoleum, IVC, Shaw, Mohawk, Armstrong are all well respected names -- I am sure there are more that I don't know. But all manufacturers make different grades of flooring, so you kind of need to know what you want. In general, I believe for vinyl, the thicker the core layer, the better, especially if you are doing a loose lay or floating installation (not glued down); same for the wear layer. Thicker is more expensive - get the best you can afford! But IIRC if you are doing glued down sheet vinyl, that won't be as thick. Start visiting the websites of flooring retailers so you can get an idea of what is out there. Also the retailer that I mentioned above has helpful information on their website -- I expect others do also. There is a flooring forum here on gardenweb too, a good place to ask questions. Also go to some flooring retailers so you can get a feel for the different grades/types of products, how they look and how they will perform.

How exciting! One of the biggest mistakes I see here with novice decorators is that their choices are too skimpy. The lamps are too small, the rugs are too small, the curtains aren't full enough, the wall decor is too small and hung too high. There are many good online graphics that illustrate how to hang art, choosing rug size, etc. Another common mistake is assuming that because gray and beige are both neutral they automatically coordinate, which isn't the case. Gray is often cool-toned, beiges and wood floors are warm-toned. When you use warm and cool, it's difficult to get a good balance. They can work together but for a decorating novice, it's easier to pick one tone or the other. Have fun, if you have a good friend whose decor you admire, include him or her in the process. People who like to decorate love to help others make the best choices for their space.

A great place to get ideas is through the scrapbook magazines like Creating Keepsakes, Paperkuts and Memory Makers. Better Homes and Gardens also puts out a magazine called Scrapbooking Etc. about once a quarter. The newest issue hit the newsstands a couple of weeks ago. You can find most of these magazines in stores that have a good selection of craft and home decorating type magazines. I just recently started scrapbooking last year and my skill level has improved 100% because of the things I have learned from these magazines. My favorite is Creating Keepsakes and my subscription to it is the best scrapbooking investment I have made so far. I know, what a shameless plug!! Have fun with your new hobby!
