Heading into the holidays.

This can be a tough time for a lot of singles, especially those who are far from or estranged from immediate family. I was talking to a gentleman friend who was feeling blue last night. Wouldn't talk about the issue much but I expect the prospect of facing another batch of holidays as the orphan guest was part of the issue. And his marriage anniversary just passed and he never had children, double sorrow.

What do you do about the holidays? I enjoy being with my kids and don't think too much about being alone. Even New Year's Eve seems fun with them. I'm a sleepy head anyway!

Oh this is my absolutely my least favorite time of the year. Looking forward to January 2nd.

We have a big family get together at my niece's for Christmas. My side of the family.
His side of the family used to be very close until his mother died. Then, it got harder and harder to get together for holidays, and so we just quit. So, I don't miss being with them.

My oldest son is taking me out on a dinner cruise for Thanksgiving this year. I'm sooooooooooo excited!!! I get to get dressed up, have wine, and people wait on me. Yippee!
My younger son is in the Navy, and is stationed in another state. He just got back from Iraq, and boy do I miss him like crazy. But, he has his wife, and his little girl, and hopefully he is making NEW traditions. (He just called me tonight to tell me he made E5!! I'm so proud of him!)
Right now, I'm staying in a travel trailer, so I'll miss decorating for Christmas, and there's no oven, so I'll really miss baking cookies. I'm thinking of hijacking my sister's kitchen for a day or so. LoL (like she'll mind cookies! ha!)

Never really did much for New Years anyway, so I don't mind.

I have killed most of my maters this year (and most of everything else too for that matter) because of not being able to haul hoses. I do so much cooking the day before Thanksgiving -- all the desserts and lots of prep for the next day -- and our dc love pizza so much, dh began ordering in pizza on those Wednesday evenings, a few years ago. I really think it was mainly out of self-defense to ward off starvation, since he couldn't even see the kitchen table or counters when he would come in from work, because every space was always completely covered, LOL. (The dc have always helped me all day on Wednesday, as they have no school, so the kitchen gets quite messy -- but we have great fun working together.) Anyway, he came up with that idea, and we all love it. The dc especially enjoy it if Charlie Brown Thanksgiving is on TV that night (none of us have ever outgrown Peanuts!). For me, it's one less thing I have to think about in all the hubbub. I actually start working on Thanksgiving prep the weekend before, as there is so much to be done. Tomorrow I'll finish buying the groceries. I spent this morning decluttering (mainly for the purpose of finding my favorite cookbook, which had somehow 'walked' out of the kitchen), and I spent much of this afternoon making my menu from past years' menus/notes (I learned from FlyLady to have a notebook just for the holidays), and compiling a grocery list. When the dc were all home, I usually cooked a simple meal for Wednesday dinner -- their favorite was hot dogs, a pot of chili, and mac 'n cheese. Then I prepared breakfast casseroles on Wednesday night and put them in the fridge to cook the next morning. I usually made one with bacon and one with sausage to satisfy all the family members who only liked one or the other. Now, Thanksgiving Day breakfast is usually a piece of fruit for me, along with a boiled egg, as I'm up at the crack of dawn working. The dc act like the teens they are; they tend to sleep as long as possible, and rarely want breakfast. Dh grabs whatever is handy; he's always a big help to me on Thanksgiving mornings -- usually double-checking everything outside to be sure there's plenty of parking space, the yard looks nice, the driveway and walks are swept, etc. Breakfast on Friday mornings is iffy -- that depends on how many of us are out for Black Friday. Those who are here have been known to eat a slice of pumpkin pie for breakfast. We all love the leftovers. ;-)

Hello, It's a beautiful day here in the high 70's. I have accomplished so much outsied and inside that I decided I needed a break. I hauled fall totes over from the shed and made room for some of them in the garage. I did get some decorating done yesterday. I'm decorating completely different this year. I'm putting out most of the fall things that can be left up through Thanksgiving. I will add the Halloween next month and then when I take the Halloween down I will turn the pumpkins around that have Happy Thanksgiving on them. The kids are coming over for dinner and we will put the toy hauler away for the winter. Will be fun to spend time swinging with DGD today. Anj, thanks for the heads up on Annilu's post. Pretty fall slate she painted. I hope she will come and post more often. Bebe just painted a darling santa. We all know I paint on black alot and I love santas, so it's my kind of project for sure. I bought a couple of brand new white cabinet doors for .50 the other day. I'm hoping they might work for some projects. I will try to get something painted to share this next week. One down, two to go! I might have a New Year's Eve engagement but I'm not holding my breath. And then there is also my 50 birthday on January 8th, just when everyone else is completely OVER the idea of celebration.

My best tip is to not be influenced by the peer pressure of our materialistic, over consuming, mass merchandised society. One of my best holiday coping stragegies is I don't have a TV. If I'm not going somewhere or with someone I just treat it like any other night at home, go to bed early, so what, it's just a day. I've been to some MISERABLE New Year's Eve parties. What I like about the holidays is I have time off work. This gives me the opportunity to do some fun things that I want to do, spend time the way I want to spend it. So I try and plan things like that. I've gone on skiing trips, visited friends, done projects around the house, traveled to be with friends overseas, and just enjoyed the peace and quiet. To me, that's a celebration. Don't judge your holiday by anyone elses' standards, that's the best secret I think. It's when you start comparing yourself to other people that the seeds of discontent grow. The other thing is to set yourself up for unhapiness by having a lot of unrealistic expectations. Like feeling sad that you don't have grandkids to spoil over the holidays, when all the while there are needy kids out there you could be volunteering to help. Folks in Pakistan don't even have shelter this time of year. Organize a New Year's fundraiser for them if you're feeling sad and lonely this time of year, I guaruntee it will make you feel better. Lonliness is our great teacher, or so I read once in some book.
