Craft room ideas

I finally have my own craft room with a huge walk in closet. It's so exciting!

I was wondering if any of you have or have come across any pictures of craft rooms that you could e-mail me. I'm looking for as many storage/decorating ideas as possible.

Here's a fun looking page. Good luck!! If you get a chance, visit a kindergarten room. One I went to had tons of short, deep wide drawers along one wall under the counter. A must have for any dream craft room!

How exciting for you! It is my hope to have my own office space and "scrapsite" when I move. I can understand your excitement! :o)

The scrapbook magazine "Creating Keepsakes" had an article some time ago about making your own scrapsite. I wish I could remember which issue...sorry. Maybe you could find it via their website?

Anyway, one idea I loved from that article was magnetic bulletin boards that you can position and fasten to the wall (so they are straight ahead of you or at eye level when you sit down at your desk to work). There are big magnetic clips you can purchase from the office supply store and you can use these to hold/clip open a magazine or rough drawing you are using as inspiration as you work.

Also, a tip that I like to keep in mind when I dream about having my own space some day is "try to keep things visible" -- meaning, if you see it, you'll use it. I think it's sooo true! Right now, I have all my punches stored away neatly, but where I can't see them. So I forget I have them or I don't think to use them while I'm in the middle of a layout. In other words, consider purchasing shelving or storage materials that allow you to see your supplies (i.e. transparent plastic or acrylic or whatever), instead of "hiding" them. (But boy do I want a room with a door so I could close it on my "mess" whenever I need to! LOL!)

Hmmm...what else? Well, don't forget to account for space for an easily accessible dust bin. Maybe a radio/tv? And maybe a work lamp or "under the cabinet" kind of lighting?

thank you Cathrugg ! My room was exactly the utility room in the house plan & the builders goofed & put it on blocks for the raised concrete foundation we have. DH told them to leave it, I always wanted a room to do crafts in so I got it. It has been a bit of a challenge sometimes with the longer than wider shape of the room but hey, I got a room right! I found inspiration for my craftroom by googling craftroom images & on the BH&G site. Also on these places like AOL decorating, home ideas, Southern living, southern accents, that have some hobby rooms & multi-purpose rooms you can tour. Have fun looking & dreaming up ideas! Bonnie

I'm with those who've suggested creating a dual-purpose room. It sounds like you would use the crafting/project space, so why not set up half the room (or at least a corner) with a work space for yourself, and find some (gently used) fitness equipment your husband wants? Then you could see how you end up using the room before devoting more space than necessary to one purpose or the other. When I'm ready for another area to have to clean and maintain (which won't be for at least a couple of years), we'll finish our basement. We have the floor plan roughly worked out, and one room will be a combined fitness and project room. Right now the fitness stuff is set up in a corner of the unfinished basement and only sees use on the coldest mornings of the year, or occasionally when the kids are playing down there and it's too hot to run outside. I'm not sure it will get much more use even when finished as I'd much rather be outside moving around, but it's nice to have during periods of extreme weather. My sewing machine is now in a corner of our bedroom that's not ideal, but better than having it shut up somewhere. Projects end up all over the house, spread out in the living room or dining room. There's a kids craft table spackled and ready to be sanded sitting in the middle of the living room as I type. I know I would use a project space if I had a designated one, but the thought of having to clean (and decorate!) the basement when I'm still working on the main floors is too much for me at the moment.

I use a lot of these clear plastic drawers. I cut the stoppers off, so I can pull the whole drawer out to go be creative. Some people decorate & label. I have them under a thin table with table cloth to hide when not in use. Even though I don't usually use plastic, it is useful in the art studio to see thru & water proof which is important for paper storage. I have had many for years. When buying these plastic bins don't expect the wheels to last. They often break within a year. I throw them away & get solid wheel casters at Walmart put on wood then put the plastic storage on top. There a lot of plastic bins out there that are cheaper, buttoo thin to keep firm or crack, so buy the thicker durable ones that'll last for years. Also, A lot of these cute plastic art carts are unfortunately junk, the thin metal warps, comes unlined, wheels break off, knobs pop out... I made the mistake several times, no way again. It upsets me to go into these craft stores and see their outright expensive prices for plain out cheap,junk. I highly suggest buying durable made storage items. There are solutions out there. Get creative and possibly let a creative project be to make a DIY storage system.
