Which Would You Suggest??

Hello Everyone,

I'm new,here, to your group and the world of scrapbooking.

I have been scrapbooking for 2 months and I want to move up from simple cuttings and images to using a machine to "jazz" up my layouts.

I have been looking at the Cricut and Xyron Wishblade machines and I would like to know who uses what and why they either like or dislike them. Which has way too many unessessary things/components and who has the most exspensive accessories. And do you even use it/them as much as you thought?

Basically I need some more info, views and opinions to make a better informed decision before buying.

I can't afford them either, but I would like to know because I got some insider info that my JoAnn Fabric will have a 50% off coupon in the mail,soon. So I'd like to use it wisely since they rarely have a 50% off coupon. In the end it really does come down to the price of it all, too.
Maybe in the end, I really don't need one at all :)

Hi Dawg, I totally understand where you are coming from. I'd be interested to know if you could grow successfully with high % composts in containers as some have suggested. If the growing medium is compacting and decomposing now, then the roots can suffer in heat and lack of aeration as the temperture climbs and the mix decomposes even more as the season progresses. I wasn't able to grow/harvest mesclun in straight potting mix (too wet but my growing condition may be shadier than yours) until I added lots of perlite almost 50/50. I definitely suggest you not skimp on buying perlite, or you risk not get to harvest anything with all the investment you've made and as the temperature gets even hotter. If anything, you don't even need to buy potting mix or composts to grow lettuce (or any vegetable). You just need perlite (or coir, an organic ingredient with good aeration characteristics but can still decomposes eventually if you want to shop around for prices against perlite) and some chemical fertilizers or hydroponic nutrients. You can make your own composts. Besides, unlike other soil conditioner, perlite is easy, light, and dependable to work with and can be sterilized and reused for many years. Return any unused potting mix or composts and grow mostly in perlite (with the mix you have now) to save yourself money in the long run. Q2: Drainage If you have a light growing medium with mostly perlite or inoragnic growing medium with lots of air pockets, you don't need many drainage holes. In fact with a light growing medium and very little care, one can grow plants in a completely enclosed container like a self-watering container in some type of evaporation/wicking systems. You also save money on water and fertlizers and gardening with less environmental pollution. For your 15/17" by 20/21" by 8 inches deep containers and growing conventionally or in the mix you have now without added perlite, I would say at least 10-14 holes or one at every 1.5". Q3: Shade for lettuce Consider if you need materials and the setup to be waterproof and wind proof based on the environment you are positioning the container. Is the codition in an open space (a yard) or a sheltered and enclosed space like a balcony- and how high up, etc.? I know when I am forced to work on a shoe-string budget, I can come up with some very ingenous creations just with what I already have around. Here are some ideas: old umbrellas (or lawn chairs), widow screens lay flat on low support or in an A-frame, an inverted clear storage vin resting on stones/wood for mini-greenhouse shade and air, or growing/moving other taller plants around them. Q4: AM or PM Shade It depends on what kind of the lettuce. Those that are grown in partial shade and sun just need some AM sun so providing shade from PM exposure is better and more important because mid day and pm sun rays (and water stress due to higher temperature) are more intense.

Cant really comment on varieties in your zone cause Im in zone 9. I grow Quinalt, All Star, Sequoia and Ozark Beauty here with okay results. For bigger berries space 12 inches apart so 16 plants should fit into 4x4 box. Any closer than 12 inches they start to compete for food and that results in smaller fruit. I removed the flowers and runners off of mine the first year but most people here try to plant in Nov or so and pull up the plants after harvest in the spring. It kinda sucks devoting a bed to them year round for 2 weeks of berries. Im going to pull mine this spring and make way for tomatoes and squash.

I live in Zone 5b north central Ohio, too. I have both black raspberries and blackberries. My black raspberries are great tasting, and grow in only partial sun. They aren't big producers but we enjoy what we get. Two years ago I planted 5 Ouachita blackberries in full sun. They are listed as zone 5 in some catalogs, and zone 6 in others. Last year I got my first harvest. Not huge but I was very pleased for my first year of production. My 6-year-old son prefers the flavor of the black raspberries to the Oachitas. I think we probably picked the Ouachitas too early, should have waited til they lost a little of their glossiness. I liked them, though. We'll see if the Ouachitas survive the two inches of ice they received in our most recent storm! My friend who lives around the corner from me has had good success with Navaho blackberries. Again, she may be pushing the zone a little bit, but hasn't had any trouble with winter kill. They are very productive and sweet. I grew a Black Satin blackberry in a former home in the same town on the south side of an attached, unheated garage and never had any trouble with winter kill. This summer I'm expanding my blackberry horizons by adding a Loch Ness, a thorny boysenberry, and two Black Pearl blackberries. I plan on laying the boysenberry and Black Pearl primocanes on the ground in the fall and mulching them well, as I know it gets too cold around here, for the Black Pearl especially! Internal Motor Range Hoods have blowers mounted inside the hood. The range hood cover, the blower motor, baffle filters, fan controls and lighting all come in one unit. Pros It is easier to install and access the internal motor. Cons Large CFM internal blowers tend to be noisier than the other types. Remote Blower Motor is located outside of the range hood. You can either mount the blower outside of the house,on an outside wall /on the roof, or you can place it inside the house, in the attic. Pros They usually has high-efficiency output,ranging from 800 to 1200 CFM rating. You can also benefit from its quiet operation since the blower is located outside of the hood,and not inside the kitchen. Cons Installing a remote blower is a new trending and it might takes more time and effort for labor to install the blower.

I have the wishblade and absolutely love it. I only use it for cutting letters, but you can also cut die cut shapes as well. The Wishblade Advanced allows you the ability to use any true type font you have on your c
omputer (and you can download tons of free fonts online too). The Cricut, you have to buy font cartridges so you are limited to the fonts they offer.

The Cricut is portable, whereas the Wishblade has to hook to a computer so unless you have a laptop, it's not really all that portable.

The wishblade is more expensive, but I think being able to use any font on your computer makes it worthwhile.

Good Morning Steph and Barb,

I'm sorry I didn't post sooner, it was so quiet here I didn't check until Sunday evening. I meant to post sooner but I've been getting ready for our daughters first birthday :)
Wow, so the Wishblade is something I should look at harder. Because all I really want to do is cut out fonts and and every now and then a clip art or two. But mostly I want the font cutting abilities.
The Cricut sounds exspensive. I'm really looking for just one initial investment and no fancy accessories. I couldn't afford to buy the Cricut cartridges all the time.

Barb, I'd love to cut out any font too. But I may not be able to afford it either :) It kinda looks that way.

Welcome to the wonderful world of scrapbooking! My suggestion for you is to go to a store that carries one or both of these machines and try it out. It's a lot of money to put out for an item and it's worth the extra time to try them out so you can actually see how they work and how easy or difficult they are to use. Good luck!

Hello Sue,
I am enjoying my scrapooking very much and I'm glad I decided to give it a try, after much urging from my mom and best friend :)
I would love to see a demo of these machines but I have been unfortunate in my search. I have seen a two minute demo on the Cricut but was dissapointed in the small amount of info given by the instructor. She couldn't even get it to work for a while. So I don't count that demo :)
And as for the Wishblade, we don't even have a single Wishblade machine in town to see.
That is why I was asking what do they do and is one "better" then the other in the font department (my only criteria, really).
Do you have one of these? Do you like it? Was it worth the investment? I kinda waffle back and forth... I hate the cost of one, yet I'd like to bring my scrapbook pages out of the "stone age" :)
