counter top microwaves?

We are almost ready to begin the remodel but I keep changing my mind about where the MW should go. Currently it is OTR but I don't like it there. I'm short and it's awkward for me to use and clean. And my house was built in the '60's and I think it looks too contempory built in. Don't want to spend the money for a MW drawer, need all my pantry space, and don't have another good spot for it. Is it a mistake to plan to have it on the counter?

The answer really depends on how much counter space you have and how you plan to use it. I've had a microwave on the counter and it was great for access. If you use it as much as any other cooking appliance then it's worth the space it takes up.

You really shouldn't be concerned about a built in looking too contemporary if you are doing a remodel because your whole kitchen is getting an update. You can also just put the microwave on a shelf and not use the trim kit.

Personally I hate OTR and being short they are dangerous to me and the kids. If you have the space - put it on the counter. I have a shelf for the microwave under the counters next to the range. The cabinet is 27" wide so a variety of microwaves will fit. I'm not using the trim kit. I'm also putting a 2nd microwave on the counter - a very small one. We have food allergies and need both microwaves. Once the kids are gone we'll be down to one.

Most MW's vent out the front top, not the sides, however, there should not be a concern with the side space.

Drop back and look how bisque looks with white painted cabinets. It isn't the best companion. This is why most use stainless. It's reflective, and it blends better with any surroundings because of that. Keep a 36" stainless hood over the cooktop. No OTR. You will get better function, and form. There are combo MW and wall oven units in stainless as well, but a 28" wide cabinet will be really really tight for a 27" combo oven. Most would want at least a 30" cabinet for a 27", because the face frame is all of the support on a framed cabinet and you would be cutting away almost all of it. Modern 30" combos need a 33" oven cabinet to provide the proper support.

It shouldn't be necessary. Microwaves have been used on countertops since they were invented. I have mine on a lacquered wood shelf (part of the cabinet, basically) and there is no damage. I could see using something under it to contain messes if you are in a messy household.
