need ideas on scrapbook page... need lots and lots of help !!!!

Hi All !!!!

I am trying to get things together to do a couple of pages for my cousin... Well, it's of her, and it's my scrapbook... Anyway... I have pictures of her graduation party before and after graduation.. and of graduation.... This is her graduation from Medical school.... I want it to look nice and not "Cheezzy" I can't use graduation caps because they wore Tams .... Any ideas would be greatly appreciated !!!!! Thanks for all of your help in advance !!

Hi Matt. I get the impression you're looking to make these pages look "elegant" and "sophisticated" -- more "adult", if you will. Your cousin is a grown woman who has just accomplished a major feat! (Congrats to her, by the way!) A good rule of thumb that you might want to keep in mind is "less is more!" By that I mean, by keeping your pages more "simple" than "busy", you'll probably get the look you've described in your post. Think about using solid colours for the backgrounds (what are her school colours?!). Think about using embellishments that look more realistic or traditional rather than cartoonish. Think about using deep, classic, bold colours (which have a tendency to look "classy!"). Do you have any souveniers from the ceremony or party (i.e. the program?) that might be interesting to include? I'm afraid I don't know of any specific products to suggest -- I've yet to do a grad layout myself. But I hope this gives you a start. Good luck!

I haven't done a grad layout yet either. Did you get a pic of the diploma? You still can... You would probably get a classier look if you stayed away from stickers altogether. You can journal on the computer and put it on acid free paper (I always matt my journaling). Looks better/more professional than handwriting. I like handwriting as it gives it the personal touch, but it may not be best in this case.

Hi Handel, I just saw this; perhaps you have already accomplished your project. I live not far from you, and we had a similar problem. We had a thicket of blackberry bushes covering about 1/2 acre. The bushes were tall enough that there could have been an old vehicle or two or even a small building buried underneath the vines for all we knew. We cleaned it up in a season without spending a lot, and mow this area about 3 times a year (4 times would be better). Ten years later it is still fine in the countryside setting; our uphill neighbors who drove past after we completed the project would say "good job". This is a rocky slope (darned glacial till!) with scattered mature alder trees. This is what we did: 1. Hired someone local who advertised blackberry brush clearing. He said he would turn the blackberry bushes into "chopped salad". He used a mower behind a tractor and worked slowly and patiently, chopping up a sliver, rather than a swath of brush, at a time because of the mass of vegetation. He obviously was experienced in doing this. 2. The tractor operator came back later, after the chopped vines were no longer viable, with a rototiller behind his tractor. He rototilled the slope twice, which turned under the chopped vines and helped smooth the bumpy ground into more gentle contours. 3. I hired a laborer to work by the hour, but paid more than minimum wage partly to encourage his interest in finishing the project. We raked up loose vegetation and wheelbarrowed it to a compost pile. Any visible remaining blackberry roots we ripped out with the aid of a hand cultivator. 4. We built wire bins along the fence line in which to dispose of rocks; they are mostly about golf-ball size to grapefruit size. (Our neighbors have gullies in which to toss rock, we don't.) We didn't want to leave rocks on a surface to be mowed. 5. We picked up some old downed branches from underneath the alder trees. We limbed up the trees quite high to give an open feeling to the "pasture" using a ladder and hand saw. We put the limbs through our chipper-shredder. 6. In the fall we hand seeded the area with an "ecology" grass mix. what we do now: Before mowing, we pick up rocks which have been recently turned up by moles and we check for downed alder limbs. My husband has a riding lawnmower with a mulching blade. He sets it to its highest setting. Unfortunately, on two sides of us there are abandoned horse pastures which have been overtaken by blackberry bushes. Vines intrude across the fences to attack my husband as he rides by. We manage to get out about once or twice a year to prune these back and put them through the chipper-shredder. We use a string trimmer around the trees, the rock cages and the fence line a couple of times a year. I've tried to establish more trees in this area, but not many have not survived because I haven't adequately protected them from antler rub. What I would do differently now: I would look into hiring goats for the first pass on the blackberry bushes, then follow through with mowing and rototilling. Google has helped. Looks like tissue cultured plants is the best option for such a large number, but for how much it will cost ($0.50) I can build a tissue culture lab and grow the plants on site. My neighbor runs a not for profit that has built a mango packing plant in Sierra Leone to provide economic resources to the region. Unfortunately mangos only fruit two months of the year. The other large crop in the area is pineapple, but there is not enough plants in the continent to plant the scale of production they need. Land, farmers, facilities is not the lacking resources, it is availability of so many starter plants that is preventing ramped up production. Apples will last at least 1-year frozen - longer if they are vacuum-sealed (FoodSaver bags). This is a simple dessert I make as a no-crust substitute for apple pie. I serve it with crushed ginger snaps on the top, or a crunchy cereal like Grape-Nuts or granola would also work. Also good with toasted pecans or a scoop of vanilla ice cream. If you are only serving two, cut the recipe in half and cook it in a small saucepan. -Grainlady ORANGE SAUCED APPLES 3 T. brown sugar 1 T. cornstarch 1/4 t. nutmeg (or apple pie spice) 1 c. orange juice (I also use apple juice/cider or apricot juice) 2 medium cooking apples, thinly sliced (2-3-cups sliced - up to a point, exact amounts of apples really doesn't matter in this recipe - I usually add more apples) In medium skillet, combine brown sugar, cornstarch, nutmeg and orange juice; blend well. Stir in apple slices. Over medium-high heat, bring to a boil stirring occasionally. Reduce heat. Cover; simmer 5-10 minutes or until apples are tender and sauce is thickened, stirring occasionally. Serve warm. Four (1/2-cup) servings. [Grainlady note: I have also add golden or dark raisins, craisins, or dried blueberries to the mix. I've also made this recipe with Old Orchard 100% Apple Cherry Juice, apples and dried cherries.]

Hi Matt,

I also agree with the follow-up comments and with more is less. I would stay away from plastering stickers on your page although I am a sticker junkie. I just completed a graduation album for my nephew. What I did was a four page fold out (which is actually 6 pages)in the shape of a diploma and cap. The two center pages (they opened from the middle out)were the diploma and the cap. When you open those pages it brought you into a 4 page layout of the gradutation and celebration. I had people at the party journal a small sentiment on paper which I when matted on acid free paper and used a pair of antique scissor to score the matting paper. Then I placed them on the pages with a few pictures.

To make the pages fold out from the middle out, I cut the jeeping off of one side of two pages. Then I used artist tape to attach them to the other pages.

I have to say, my nephew absolutely loved it. I hope you find it useful.

Well..opinions are like noses, everyone has them and my nose thinks there is nothing more elegant then simple rounded photos, rich classic colors or jewel tones, matted on a minimal edge contrast color. I love the ideas above about the expanded layout , blowup of the diploma, and journaling with your computer. A sticker junkie myself, you could use the outside pages to do something whimsical with stickers or confetti.Great ideas ladies!

I found some really great "calligraphy" pens at Michaels. I can't remember the name or brand, but they have a pen tip at either end...for a smaller and larger calligraphy look. You have to practice some to learn how to hold the pen but I really love the look much much better than my plain hand-writing (which I HATE when I journal). They provide a more personal touch (look) to the page then printing calligraphy style on the computer (which is also a nice idea). Like Jill, I usually like to matt what I journal, depending on the page. If your cousin just graduated from Med school, could you somehow incorporate something from her "soon to be profession"? Perhaps you could make (scrape) a nice looking professional business card with her name, the date she graduated, her title etc.? I'm not too up on graduating med students so maybe she has to complete her residency, but maybe you could include smaller photos of where she will work or complete her residency on the page (in the background or superimpose photos of her on top of these smaller ones)? For something a bit more comical, maybe you could get a photo(s) of her with friends or family "using" her medical tools from her black bag with a humorous title page or a funny lyric or poem? I love to matt a lot of my photos and I also love to try (try being the key operative word here)and make up poems or rhyme when I journal. I think you could have a lot of fun and still have some very elegant and "fun" pages. Good luck!
