Craftsman Garage Door Opener -won't close

Okay... I've seen several posts about this sort of problem. My Craftsman 1/2 HP GDO won't close. It goes a few inches, reverses, then the light flashes 10 times.

Sensor problem, right?

Well, this same thing happened last year (about the same time... when the first cold snap hit). I read a post here about the sensors and took the measure of removing them from the door frame, wiring them directly to the unit and placing them 5 inches apart. This seemed to resolve the issue and everything functioned until this year's cold snap. (So that blows the "expanding/contracting brackets theory.)

So now I'm wondering if the problem is in the sensors (send unit light is on and steady, receive unit light it off) or in the circuit board they're attached to. Before I drive all the way across town and buy new sensors, is there any way to wire the unit to bypass the sensors all-together?
