The whole of GW/THS seems to be very slow. Are message boards going to die off?

Seems like this forum goes through slow periods, a lot of them.
As far as the GW forums, people should be busy harvesting and dealng with the harvest, takes a lot o time.
Instead of mostly lurking on this forum, I'm gonna start posting more - espescially since I'm committed to being single for a while. Gotta think about myself for a change.

To moccasinlanding: I assure you it is Blue Mammoth I have tried in the past. To Ken: I have yet to find anything left at the door; although I had to adapt quickly back in 2011 when my mother brought to me BOTH T-Rex and Blue Mammoth. And yes I smiled and did say thank you very nicely. Having both WAS NOT my plan at that moment. She is threatening to "share" some of her Mouse Ears next summer (not sure what variety she is talking about as of yet. Honesty I do get nearly 100% sun for about 2 to 3 hours from about noon in my garden (working on eliminating that next year). 'Popcorn' simply dropped its green in August; it did have an intense gold yellow as it faded. I thought that moment was exciting. 'Vulcan' took off, and exploded into growth making every other hosta look bad last year. 'Gorgon' was a close second in that department. 'Frosted Mouse Ears' and 'Holy Mouse Ears' each seem to have settled in with polite growth. 'Xanadu Empress Wu' was planted in August, and that even tried to take off by growing leaves that were twice the size of what it came with. In short I am expecting a 86% (18 out of 21 plants) survival rate next spring with only three plants not coming up (as mentioned at my blog). Those being ... Blue Mammoth, Itsy Bity Spider, and Popcorn. Naturally they have the option of surprising me, and appearing on cue. Everything else looked in good shape when I cut everything back Mid-October for their long winter nap! Finally Ken, to be honest, I do have a few theories as to why my 2013 survival rate was 56% (from 18 hosta to 10 hosta). I can't discuss those until I see what happens next spring (2014; trying to be objective here folks). Hint keep watching my blog for a lengthy narrative on that topic there. Happy to hear I could help you with your sink choice, Ott2. I contacted Blanco USA in NJ and they mailed me the chips. You can go on their website and request the silgranite via a form they have, but after a week when I had not received the samples I called them. They explained that they will not respond to your email unless you make a request for them to do so. The next day, my samples arrived. The Metallic Gray and Anthracite sparkle, like they have shimmer in them. The Truffle is much more matte and subdued, but I think it's elegant and a gorgeous shade with the Luce di Luna. I had also thought about the Jet Mist Antiqued yesterday. It was very pretty, resembled soapstone without the maintenance issues, and 25% less than the Luce. Check it out! If I did the Luce di Luna just on my islands, I might splurge. And do something more solid and less expensive on my perimeter. But, I thought the wood top on my eating island would be warmer than the quartzite, and I don't think I can do three different countertops (wood, Luce di Luna, and quartz or granite) in one kitchen. ;-) So many decisions, aargh.

LOL! I just came here to read the posts, & was thinking how depressing it was here. No offense, but you all make it feel like there's no hope for single people. Maybe it's time to change the outlook from despair to hope... Then again, maybe I'm Pollyanna;-) Seriously, it's a choice to be single. If you wanted someone that badly, you'd find them. However, being single can mean being strong enough to stand alone & not settle for someone who will make us unhappy - just to say we have someone. Single does NOT mean loser!

Hi everyone, that you for weighing in on my very long post! j4c11 Not only are there climate differences (NC has coastal, piedmont and mountains) but there are different requirements for warm and cool season turfs. You did a good job of highlighting this point (although I believe you made a typo when you stated, Charlotte is warm season grass territory.) In our area, almost everyone has fescue (cool season). The occasional yard with zoysia (warm season) stays brown for six months. As you know, fescue looks terrible in July and August and then we all have to re-seed in September/October. Going south, it quickly switches over to warm season grasses, just as you stated. Although I am sure you are correct, I am going to gamble and forgo the pre-emergent at this time because I want to do some spot seeding and plugging in February. I did try to round up the common bermuda in the beginning but I did not allow enough time to complete the task before reseeding, so then I just started manually removing it. I realize there are still plenty of rhizomes, stolons and seeds laying in wait for me to go on vacation. dchall Thank you for clarifying several points and for providing me with more accurate search terms. I watch both the NC State and Clemson gardening programs and they are always harping on only following research based practices. I always find your advice to be extremely well-reasoned and you are generous with your time. The university turf sites are not particularly helpful to me because they tend to give a thumbnail description, followed by three pages of chemicals to try. They also do not take risks because they are appealing to the masses. For instance, if they tell Joe Smow to water 1" a week, all at once, Joe will probably blindly leave his sprinkler on, the water will run off the compacted, clay soil and into the storm drain. My next challenge is to get a better understanding of our irrigation system in order to split the watering sessions, so I can jump on the deep and infrequent watering bandwagon. :) I have always composted and have gone to great lengths to improve the soil for all the other areas of my property. I even have a small vermi-composter. For some reason, I never really thought the front yard turf was "compost worthy". I now think of it as a very challenging intensive garden and I believe I will follow your advice and do more feed stock runs and less leaf bag collections/mulching. I am tiring of my property looking like Sanford and Son's because I am madly processing leaves. Due to your sound advice, the change in the health of the soil has been remarkable, in a period of only five months. Mike A spark chart is one of those laminated study guides that outlines the basics of a subject, such as chemistry. Thank you for the link to MSU Turf weeds.net. It appears to be a very well organized site with clear photos. I especially appreciate the "Look Alike" tab feature. If there are any grad students reading this, it would be a very worthwhile project to start cataloging all the new and improved fescue varieties, compare them to look-a-like weeds, and then laminate it. :) It seems fescue is undergoing the same explosion of varieties as coleus or heuchera. Renee You sound very logical and sane :) In closure, I am still wondering when fescue blooms? We have enjoyed a very warm January (despite what the white house says). There are some cherry trees, forsythia, daffodils and Poa Anna/and or fescue in bloom! Thank you very much for your help.

Man it has gotten awfully quiet....can't I leave you kids alone for even a few days??....JK....I'll see what I can do to do my part to keep things going....just don't make me talk to myself or Captain Morgan might pull into port again

Just a newbie here but have been in the shadows for a while.
Still learning. I was thinking of starting a conversation with myself and I haven't even had anything. Now that is sad.

Things could be really bad. At least our only "honey-do" lists are those we've created ourselves. Actually, it's too hot here to do much of anything.

I am working more than I like and sleeping too much. I do like reading and I am always disappointed to come in and find no one has posted.

This brings up one of the reasons that I like being single. I can concentrate on work and sleep and eat (or not) whenever I need to. No one here to complain.

Sounds like some CPR is needed. I agree with jc:

"I do like reading and I am always disappointed to come in and find no one has posted."

The games have breathed a bit of life into the forum. I really like those. I've been around less due to cat nursing duties and spending more time in my garden this time of year. I still think of your posts though, even when I'm not here.

We are alive, it just gets hard to come around during the week because, I have to do yard, laundry, errands, vet visits, eat, sleep. work, repairman, pull weeds, vacuum, grocery store, vet visit, damn toilet runs go to box store for parts, fix toilet, pay bills, new project at work, of course I have the time...:0). What I need is....

Oh ok....I am assuming that she is deeply involved in her relationship and hopefully she is on her way to wedlock if that is what she desires.....I know as much as anyone that has read the board...I never sensed the love, I guess...all our emails were in a disagreement, not standard communication.

I have been around quite a few forums and find that almost all of them tend to quiet down during the summer, especially on weekends. Then, come September, they pick up again as people come inside more and kids go back to school.
