I don't know your plan but is there any chance you can run the kitchen color out into the great room sort of as an accent wall? I think it would look bad to have a seam with two colors meeting in the middle of one wall.

kgwlisa - i have thought about that running the blue into the greatroom behind the outside fireplace wall. also wondering about mixing the 2 colors on that same wall somehow. honestly i am so confused. we took the wall out at the last minute and now I'm sort of regretting it already. maybe should have put an arched opening in or something. It's going to be so hard to paint and even the ceiling lighting is going to be difficult now.

dreamywhite, in our last home we had a situation similar to yours. I wanted a bright cheer yellow in our eat in kitchen and a neutral in the living entry and hallway to go with the country blue checked wallpaper and duck border. Sounds so funny, doesn't it? But that was then... 8^O

The only picture I have of it was taken before we added the trim. But we used a double edged trim a bit narrower than the baseboard trim. It was stained to match the trim.

Oh just thought about how we did in our current home. Duh! Can't believe I didn't think of that first.

looks to me like an accent wall color is the way to go. though in my old house now that I think about it too, I had the kitchen and dining room 2 different colors with a line running down the middle. never even thought twice about it. I think I'm nervous now because this wall is my biggest focal point in the whole house cuz it holds the fireplace and drybar cabinets entering into the kitchen. I'm literally so confused on what to do it's not even funny. I really hope I figure this out soon. Seems like when I google inspirational photos that most people just do all one color. As I like that thought I always wanted that spa blue color to go behind all my white cabinets. Maybe I'm wrong in thinking that will look good. Maybe I should mix accent walls or something. Who ever thought paint could be SO CONFUSING. It's really not normal to be this stressed out over color is it?

No offense to anyone on this thread but I think open concepts with 2 colors (other than an accent wall) look hodge podge.

And I personally prefer no accent walls as well but that's a preference.

Our floorplan is semi-open (see pics) and I was planning on doing a different color in the kitchen. But I'm SO GLAD that I didn't. It would have looked disjointed.

BTW, this picture is mid-backsplash installation and is from us playing around with curtain ideas in photoshop. It's not near completion!!

I appreciate all the feedback and photos. Wondering now if I did decide to do an accent wall and picked a darker color on the paint strip for that and did the rest in a lighter neutral color. Wondering if I should just accent my spa blue in drapes perhaps on my kitchen patio door and windows. Now I'm nervous that Megsy mentioned accent walls and not really liking them. I think it may look okay though with neutral colors medium brown vs light brown with spa blue accents or something like that. RH has some great colors they put together that I really like. I just hope I make the right choice.

I will say, though, that if most of your inspiration pictures don't feature accent walls then that tells you something. (Not saying this is the case, but you know ...)

Dreamywhite have you thought about putting a large, as in tall too, piece of furniture to divide the rooms? I did that at our last home displaying things that looked well in both a living room and kitchen. All pictures of that home furnished were pre-digital so I can't share them. Sorry.
Since you are still in the building stages and if it's really bothering you, why not build a small bump out wall or add a large archway between the two areas?

justgotabme - keep thinking about adding that archway quickly here just not sure. my DH wants to keep it the way it is very open but originally I had an archway there and wasn't sure I liked it because it did kinda take away from seeing the cabinets behind the sheetrock on the left & right of the archway. I don't know I guess I'm horrible at making decisions.

I do actually have a row of cabinets dividing the room. In my great room it goes window - fireplace - window - 5' drybar of cabinets in kitchen - patio door in kitchen. That is how the wall reads. the color change would go between the window and drybar if any color change were to happen that is.

Does anyone think that if you have a very open concept of 2 rooms that putting an arched wall in the middle makes the rooms smaller? That's the other thing I was wondering about as well.
