Mamma Mia! My vintage Italian marquetry game table

I thought I'd share because I think he's pretty unique! I'm on a quest to find the *perfect* spot in my house for him, but right now he's in my stairwell.

I picked him up at a local furniture consignment store. He was shipped over from Sicily by a family in the 1960's, and was hardly used. I just love all the glossy, inlaid wood detail, especially on the table top! And chairs!

Wow.. that is lovely and a real showstopper! While it definitely fills that odd space at the base of the stairs, it doesn't really do much to show it off. Do you use it or is it just for show? I'd love to see it in a library or a family room-- maybe in front of a window?

It's truly gorgeous-- as is your staircase!

Okay Ladies, that does it for me! I think we've heard from everyone who's going to speak up about their boxes. Everyone did a fantastic job for their partners! NHSuzanne - I feel for you N. Easterners. We are just getting rain and are supposed to get a wintry mix tomorrow, but I don't expect anything serious. Stay warm and dry if you can. DeeMarie - I did read that about your governer. Glad he's going to be ok. I just preordered Lean Mean Thirteen from Amazon. I had a $25 gift card burning a hole in my pocket! Just a thought. I just finished going through all my summer clothes and deciding what I want to take to FL. Now I am depressed. I need to start walking again!! I did buy 2 new pairs of shorts yesterday and I can still wear my capris from last year. But I have a HUGE pile of clothes for Good Will. I am going to use this forum for a minor vent. I went to Macy's yesterday (I have been boycotting that store since they bought out Kaufmann's) and decided to spend a $20 GC that I got for Christmas. I picked out 2 things that were on sale and if I used my Macy's charge, I was supposed to receive an additional 15% off. But the clerk told me that if I was paying with a GC, I wouldn't get the 15% discount. So I told her to ring up one item using the GC and ring up the other item on my Macy's card. Instead, she rang up both items together and applied the GC. Thinking that I didn't want to make a scene, I just used my Macy's charge for the balance and asked her to see if the 15% just might have been applied. She said it wasn't. So I asked her to void the sale and start over and do what I had asked her to do in the first place, ring the items separately. After reringing the first item and trying to apply the GC, she discovered that my GC now had a "0" balance. I suggested that when she voided the sale, the GC dollars had not been reapplied to the GC. She said she didn't think that was the case, but she called over another employee (who knew what she was doing) and they discovered that I was right. So the original clerk tried calling the 1-800 # on the back of the GC and she couldn't get through. I then suggested that maybe she had to dial 9 first to reach an outside #. Turns out I was right. By now I was feeling like I should go behind the register and ring the sale myself! When she finally reached the 1-800 #, it turned out that my $20 will not be reapplied to the GC for 7-10 business days. At this point, I felt there was nothing I could do but quietly seethe, so I bought the two items and put them on my Macy's charge. I then asked for a copy of the voided sale, the clerk's name and employee number and the manager's signature on the voided sale. When I got home, I was still mad (even though I had acted for nicely in the store) and I decided to look more closely at the voided sale. Turns out that I HAD RECEIVED THE 15% OFF the original transaction, thus the sale never should have been voided!!! Thus I never should have temporarily lost my $20! Now I am mad and am debating whether to report the salesclerk or just chalk this up as a lesson learned. If you are still with me (I know it was a long rant - LOL), opinions will be welcome. I don't understand why the checks do not work with the herringbone fabric. Herringbone is a subtle solid. I like the curtains you have, I like the gold mirror and I love the Greek mirror. I like your new chairs. I think it is a matter of putting it all together and seeing it in the space. Just need to remove the coat rack as it will be a catch-all for various fabrics and will detract from your otherwise glamorous room. It is fine for a room to look lived-in but with the right lived-in items. The sweet biskit cat gives it that perfect look. I think the ease of herringbone, the casual man look and the backdrop of beautiful chairs and an elegant rug are very pretty but where are my3dogs and alison to weigh in on this?

As a perpetual tourist (I live here), here's my take: 1) STATUE OF LIBERTY. This is an all day trip. Go early. Book your tickets ahead of time on the Internet. Pack a lunch. The kind of food they sell on the island is the kind that gets you sick on the ferry going back. You can go to the highest point, the crown, if you go on the first boat of the day. But it's not worth it (tiny little room, tiny windows, crappy view, horrific climb up corkscrew stairs to get there). The rest of the day, you'll go to the base, which has a great view. There is also a fantastic museum IN the Statue. You can buy combo tickets for the Statue and Ellis Island, but even if you whiz through the Statue, you will end up with about an hour to spend on Ellis Island--if you are really interested in Ellis Island, think about making it a separate trip. 2) I third the STATEN ISLAND FERRY. Here's what I usually do with my guests. Find out when sunset is (check the paper's weather page or the Internet). Make sure that you are in the waiting room for the Staten Island Ferry 15 minutes before that time. Get on the ferry. Watch the sunset of the Statue of Liberty. When you get to Staten Island, get off the ferry and get on the next one going to Manhattan. If you are in the front of the boat, facing Manhattan, you will get a postcard view of downtown Manhattan all lit up. Did I mention that this trip is FREE??? As I think of more, I'll post more.

FA, we just picked it up this weekend and haven't found the *perfect* spot for it just yet! Would love it in my LR but no room---might have to jumble around my furniture to create a space. I'm almost afraid to put it in front of a window because of the sun. Texas sun!

Texas, sorry to be OT, but I love your wrought iron stairs! I am just getting ready to order for mine. Did you design them your self? I have a wrap around staircase, so trying to decide to put the scroll is driving me crazy.

Thank you!!! Um, the table and chair set weren't "cheap" but I know I did pretty good. I was able to get the lady to drop the price a couple hundred bucks; I saw a lot of people looking at it but it's over-the-top for most folks. It takes a special buyer and I knew she wanted to move it pretty bad---her place was oozing with furnishings and she needed the space.

DH and I had backpacked Italy and were drooling over the inlaid wood furnishings there---we really wanted some of it but the cost in Euros and then shipping it over was too much. And the more intricate it gets, the more expensive. I hung on to some of the business cards hoping someday.... so this little game table had our names written all over it. ;)

Lauraella, I'm a fan of the scrolls. I did not design them; my builder had me pick them out from a catalog (and I do not know the make or anything on them!). I have seen them in other homes but put together differently; i.e. my scrolls are double and face the same direction going up the staircase but on the juliet balcony, they butt up to one another in opposite directions. That is the only design part that I did.
