Color Magic is one of those HTs that I've tried three times in my zone 5 yard and it won't survive the winters for me. Sheer Magic and Black Magic are in their 5th year, but Color Magic just isn't as hardy for me. Of course your yard may be different, but I'd recommend choosing one of the warmer spots in your yard - a south facing spot near the house and protected from winds. You're right that this one needs winter protection in zone 5, and I hope your results are better than mine. Cynthia

Zyperiris, it gets super cold in Kansas, like reeeeal cold, way colder than PNW. But the terrific thing about Lincoln in our zone is that it is always the first rose to bloom and the last rose to bloom. It will still bloom in DECEMBER!!!! zone 5 Kansas. Again, organic sea tea is critical for producing tons of basal breaks and prolific blooms, but if the rabbits get to the rose as flaurabunda says, Lincoln is TOAST! and rabbits love Lincoln canes because they are so soft thick and juicy, like a boiled carrot. If you touch a new thick Lincoln cane, the thorns are so soft that you can actually pet the cane and bend the thorns, that is why Lincolns are so irresistable to a rabbit. In 2009, Lincoln was the one rose the rabbits ate out of the 5 in my back lot. In 2010, I had a baby rabbit climb up my 3' tall wire mesh perimeter (bulges in the mesh that gave it a foothold). It had access to 5 roses again and the one rose it kept zeroing in on was my Lincoln. That's why you always have to put wire mesh directly all around the base of Lincoln itself! and extra deterrents like garlic clips and Bobex! I now have to triple protect my roses. Wire mesh fences only goes so far when it comes to Lincoln. Zyperiris, the petals may turn blue as they age, but in my garden most petals are still a brilliant red color when they fall, they rarely have the chance to turn blue, because what is so lovely about Lincoln is that unlike most roses, Lincoln blooms never rot and decay on the stem. They scatter brilliant red petals everywhere, which is sort of romantic to me, lol! Ingrid Bergman may be stunning but it has terrible fragrance, and fragrance is an absolute requirement in my garden. Mr. Lincoln does turn a bright maraschino red if there is scorching Midwest sun, but in places like northern Illinois or Pennsylvania it will be that gorgeous deep red for summer with the more Northern sunlight. Because we are still getting non-stop rains in Kansas, I'm getting more deep reds than I would normally.

I can only guess on this one because a true comparison would require both to be the same size and have the same achieved air flow rate. I would not expect anyone to have such a setup that could be compared. The baffle noise will be due to turbulence from air passing over the sharp edges of the baffle sheet metal. The mesh noise will be due to turbulence from air passing over the edges of the mesh holes. Although baffles have more metal surface than meshes filling the same area, I would argue that baffles have less edge length. This suggests that the mesh filters would generate more turbulence and thus be noisier. However, the size of the turbulence cells could be different in each case, and the sound frequency spectrum for one might be different than the other, leading to different perceptions of the noise relative to the actual achieved acoustic power. So, we are faced with a lot of qualitative fluid dynamics phenomena that don't lead to an obvious conclusion, so intuition prevails. In my estimation baffles will be no more noisy than meshes for the same air flow rate. I would also estimate that at moderate flow rates where the mesh induced noise isn't partly ultrasonic, the mesh noise will be louder. Also, relative to the italics above, equal fans do not yield equal flow rates, even with perfect MUA control. The losses in ducts of different diameter are not equal, and meshes will cause greater pressure loss, even when clean, than baffles for the same actual aperture area. (And most mesh filters do not cover as much area under their hood's boundaries as baffles usually do for the same hood boundaries.) So the flow rate achieved with meshes may be lower, but at the same time the air velocity at the mesh may be higher, and hence more noise is generated per unit area for less area. This is a non-trivial condition for which to have to estimate relative noise. kas

There is no single filter type that collects aerosol grease particles of all sizes within the particle spectrum generated by cooking (possibly excluding intense UV conversion of grease to gases.) One can tour on-line advertisements for commercial filters and see what part of the particle spectrum they are designed for and how well they work over part of the spectrum. What you hope for in a residential hood is that you collect the larger particles in the filter and the smaller particles exit the ducting before they can condense on the ducting. The result will always be imperfect relative to the goal. Deposition depends on what sizes pass the filter (baffles or mesh, usually) and the velocity of the air in the ducting, and the temperature of the ducting. Note that Magic Lung centrifugal grease slinging is not that different from how baffles work to collect grease. Like baffles, the Magic Lung squirrel cage fan can only impinge the larger particles against the assembly wall. The fine ones stay as an aerosol in the air flow and are passed up the duct. kas
