New windows, old house-need your pics

We've wanted to replace the upper plate glass window in our character home for a long time, but can't really afford it. We were repainting the trim this week and realized it is all rotten around the window and it has to be done whether we can afford it or not.

We did the lower one 6 years ago and because it is in our living room with all the original stained oak, we splurged and had a replica wooden one made based on pictures of the original.

I don't think we can afford to do that for the upper (but we would have 3 sash type rather than one large plate), but I'm scared it's going to look horrible to have vinyl/aluminum (or whatever window trim is made of) on our old home.

I'd really like pictures of what other people have done. I'm not so worried about the interior, but the exterior has me very concerned.

Thanks for any pics or advice.
