Getting started, part 2 - 'Relationships'

I'll be quick to admit that I'm not in a relationship with a SO. I've been divorced since 9/96 and have had very few dating relationships with anyone. I had some recovery issues to work through. Since I have 2 precious girls, it's very hard for me to start a relationship that may not go anywhere for them to ask "is so&so going to be our new daddy?" This happened in the last dating relationship I was in.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Sandi, yes, it has been an issue.

I've been on my own with my daughter, since March 1997, just three months after she was born. At first I didn't date during the whole 18-month long divorce. I was, after all, still a new mom and my whole being was consumed by my baby. Plus I was stressed over the nasty divorce and the last thing on my mind was 'men'.

I'm to that point again, after a back-to-back dating disaster in my life. Taking a looong break! For my sake, and for DD's. I guess the best thing is I've realized I don't ever want to get married again OR live with anyone. I've been "in control" of my own life for years now, I have everything I want and need, and I have always had more fun (and more love) with my daughter than I have with any man.

Sledriding with her for two hours yesterday until we were red in the face, slamming into trees and fences, laughing and rolling in the snow... then going for Sushi and ice cream was probably the best date I've had in years! SHE is my relationship!

I have not been in a relationship since I left him. I would love to be in one but don't know anyone I am attracted to...

While young, the first year, I would keep them warm, watered and under lights. They probably won't go dormant. After the second season I treat them like a mature plumie and let them go dormant. I wouldn't store a dormant plumeria below 45 F and make sure the soil is dry. I water mature plumies very little during dormancy, literally just enough to keep the roots from drying out completely. I think I only watered my dormant plumies 2 or 3 times over the winter this year. Cool damp soil will almost guarantee root/stem rot. I move them to a warm, well lit area several weeks before it's time to put them out. This will wake them up and you can begin watering and feeding. Some will wake up on their own without being moved. Most of mine woke up really early this year without my moving them. It's just been so mild. They've been stored in the back of the garage so they did get some light during the winter but I don't have a heater in there.

hahaha! lurking in the rose bushes is more appropriate for me, Jim! I am stilllll wondering where! JeffAurora is! I haven't seen his roses, seems like forever! and I'm ready to POUNCE! Yeah, Harold, great to see you too, makes things lively! especially since now I'm going to have an itsy bitsy debate with Jim right now. Jim, Karl's method is completely different than his other method, simply burying the pots in the ground with external winter protection. That first method Karl mentioned is called Minnesota tipping which is completely different than the simple buried pot method. Minnesota tipping is when you are burying the entire! plant underground. That does guarantee 100% survival, but for most people that is simply not feasible. Burying takes too much real estate. There's no room! to do Minnesota tipping for each pot when your lot is blockaded by other roses. I have my doubts about what Ehow says about tilting the pots. The main reason is that the holes are evenly dispersed and you have to consider that tilted pots means tilted soil which can erode away exposing too much roots and cane should heavy November rains pelt away at one's plants. I think tilting is a very! bad idea. Plus my pots are very large! and deep. It should have no troubles in terms of drainage I feel. Usually even moderate-heavy rain are only 2" high. I'd rather take the risk of drainage than soil eroding away from my canes and roots, exposing them to freezing ice. That would surely kill my rose. Also, when a pot is as huge and deep as mine, it won't turn into an ice cube. It's too large. My pots, by the way are all plastic. Actually, heheh! come to think of it, even if it were terra cotta and were to crack, that's o.k. too! you see, then with a cracked terra cotta pot it's easy to remove the plant from the cracked pot and transplant it and! you wouldn't have any drainage problems because any excess water would just drain out. In fact a cracked terra cotta pot would just make my life "easy", lol! but no, I have a plastic pot to wrestle with come spring! P.S. I'm so happy to hear that Sue's vision has returned that is TERRIFIC news! I am keeping those prayers rollin' for her! Hurray!

I found out that the type of rose slug we have has up to 6 generations per season. Yikes! LOL I have to agree with the below article about them generally feeding at night, because there was not hardly any damage on Courageous yesterday, but, this morning it had lots of noticable damage, even from a distance of 55ft. ------------------------------------------------------------ Generally rose slugs feed at night. Depending on the species, young rose slugs feed on the upper or lower surfaces of leaves between veins, leaving a 'window' of translucent tissue that turns brown. As some species of rose slugs get larger, they chew large holes or the entire leaf with only the midrib remaining. Regular inspection of roses is important because feeding typically progresses quickly, and extensive leaf skeletonizing can occur if infestations are not noticed. In addition, with their coloring, they can be very difficult to spot on leaves. Control: Rose slugs can be controlled by handpicking. They can also be removed by spraying with water. Once dislodged, they cannot climb back onto the plant. Insecticidal soap and horticultural oil are also effective against rose slugs.

Oh I'm so sorry. Finding out the loss is greater than you thought is almost like losing it all over again. (((hugs))) There is something other than all new or a bad replica...it's a good replica. Friend of mine (I should take pics some time) built a new house about 15 years ago, and to walk inside, you'd think it was from the 17th-18th century. He worked with a fellow who salvaged antique wood and he used real beams, flooring, boards, etc. to create an excellent replica. There are also in between steps, like using more modern materials in the same way that they did back then so it gives the same look and coziness and feel, but in a slightly fresher way. I was in another house on a house tour that was a lovely Queen Anne style victorian...just gorgeous. We were stunned when they told us where the addition was. They did such a good job of replicating the style and trim, that it was seamless. So it is possible. Also, keep in mind the benefit of the new is that it won't need the maintenance or have the issues (think electrical, plumbing, rot) as the old has. And the new can provide wonderful features that the old never could like in-floor heating, adequate electrical outlets for today's appliances...

I'm in that loooong break you mention (and don't mind it a bit). I'm like you. I love that I'm in control. I don't think I want to be married again either & living outside of marriage is out of the question (both from my religious beliefs & wanting to be a good example for my girls). Plus, it'd be REAL hard to give up any of my space. In other words, no room in the closet!

My last *relationship* was with a friend from college that I'd made contact with (after 10 years). He admitted that he was having some problems and wasn't ready for a relationship. The girls really liked him, but I (if I get a guy) need a guy who has his stuff together. (In the time I've known him again, he left his job to try acting, lost his house & lost his car. A guy who can live within his income & budget is what is needed.)

Sledding sounds like fun. There were flurries *somewhere* in my area on Saturday. Not at my house though. Actually, I've had enough snow from living in Germany for 2 years and then Colorado & Missouri for 2 more. It was up to 65 today and is supposed to be mid-50s tomorrow with rain/thunderstorms up til Friday.

Debi, it sounds like your situation is like mine. My schedule is work (no new people here, most guys are married or if unmarried I wouldn't want to date them), taking the girls to gymnastics (new in our schedule, most there are either too young or married), taking the girls to violin & piano (30 minutes away & once they're finished I'm ready to head home & relax), and PTA (same as all above). Sometimes just having someone to talk to of the opposite sex who's not a relative is what I need.

Okay, I'm beginning to ramble. I think I'll take a gander at the gardening sites for a bit. TATA. Sandi

I've been alone for many years, with quite a few relationships to break the monotony. Some more serious than others, and some barely outlasting dinner. With adult children, these haven't been a problem. In fact, my son and I have a running joke. After he's met the current man in my life, I ask 'Do you want a (George, Fred, Tom, Dick, Harry) for a daddy?' His answer is always 'maybe' if he likes the guy, or 'terrible name' if he doesn't. He's better at picking 'em than I am, so his response is my yardstick!

I do believe that the ideal life would be with a wonderful, loving spouse - that said - the worst life is one with the wrong spouse, and I've been there, done that.

Although I'm open to the idea of finding someone to share my life with I don't go out looking - and the few times I've dated since turning single again in '88 only complicated my life, something I'm not willing to put up with now.

I guess if I'm ever to find "Mr. Wonderful" he's going to have to come banging at my door. LOL!
