Elvis costume HELP!

I have to make a costume for an "Elvis Tribute Artist" and I need help. This is for several performances so needs to be more than "just a costume". What fabric would be best? And most of his costumes had these little mirror things on them. Any idea what those are and how they were secured to the fabric?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

You have a big job! I would use satin fabric for a shirt and cape ?? not sure what era Elvis you want to do. Do you have any craft stores in the area, there are those large size sequins people are using, as far as mirrors those were like a bead, they had a hold in one end, today there are glues that will hold anything, do a computer search on costumes see if there are supplies that are easy to use. rene

I'm not sure what era the costume is but it is a jumpsuit with a big stand-up collar. The jumpsuit shouldn't be that hard - it is the decorating it!

I will be going to a couple of craft stores this week-end and I will look for beads. I will also do an internet search.

I've just gotten off the phone with the radio station and they were nice enough to tell me who the winner is and, unfortunately, it isn't Marty. I was, frankly, floored that she hadn't won by a landslide, but she didn't. I do honestly think that she had the best costume and thank all of you for your kindness and efforts to help her with your votes. She told her sis, (my bestfriend) last night that the best thing about this contest would not be winning, but the wonderful kindness, support and thoughtful comments from you all here on GW. Thank you, Laurie! The first one has the hat I originally thought of wearing but I also posted about this at the Holidays forum and someone suggested the idea of a top hat too (how would that look?). I like the idea of gold trim too! I think it would look better than the star motif that I thought of. I am going to look at the thrift stores for a jacket and pants. Switching from costume to props, I wanted to ask you what I should write on the "refreshment tray"? I was thinking about the name of the musical along with "Opening Tonight" on the front and on the sides I would just write "Refreshments" or "Candy" or something like that. How about some gold fringe trim from the box to make it look official? Just for fun: did anyone figure out what musical I'm talking about yet? Brad AKA Moonwolf

If you are going for her 80's look, I don't think I ever saw one with an actual crinoline. I think her petticoat were layers of ruffled tulle or similar fabrics; very much like a 1950s full skirt petticoat but much shorter. You should be able to alter one you have, or make one fairly easily with a sewing machine. You can double up the layers with the part you cut off by sewing it on. I am dressing my DS)9) as a UPS man this year. I bought brown cargo shorts and a brown button down shirt at Childrens Place. Got a brown UPS cap on clearance at K Mart months ago for $1.20 (thats what inspired me). I already have the perfect size Amazon box for him to flip open for candy as he says "trick or treat". His eyeglasses turn dark in the light so they will look like sunglasses I think. All I need is to get short brown socks and to figure out an easy way to make a UPS logo for the shirt. hmmm....as for Grant, it reminds me of when my daughter was 2. She cried and carried on not wanting to wear the hat to her lion costume. In our pictures inside, she is not wearing the hat, but once she got outside in the stroller to trick or treat I was able to put the hat on while she stared at costumed kids. She didn't even seem to care anymore. The following year she was a clown and I painted her blond hair with pink hair mascara. It came out nice-no hat needed. You could probably get Grant some caped kid pjs at Target. They used to carry Superman and Batman, I think they still do. I had to buy them in 2 sizes because my son and daughter both liked to wear them. Does Grant like any particular characters?? He'd be a cute Bob The Builder! Someone mentioned a mailman-when my other daughter was in 1st grade they had Career Day. She dressed as a 'mailgirl' and delivered her homework in a priority mail envelope LOL!! I like the scarecrow idea! Thats not something you normally see.

Simplicity published a costume pattern that is exactly what you are looking for.

Siplicity 9916
Size AA 34-38 in. chest
Size BB 40-44 in. chest

Designers name is Andrea Schewe - which may help with web searches.

It's a jump suit with a high collar, bell bottoms with insets for a focus fabric, and a cape.

You should be able find it on ebay or other on-line sewing pattern resellers. Google on variations of "sew pattern simplicity 9916" with costume, Andrea Schewe, and Elvis added in.

PS: McCalls also published a jump suit costume pattern that you could use, but the Simplicity pattern is much better.

The pattern I have is the McCalls one (which was the only one I could find at the time). The Simplicity one looks sooooo much more authentic. I've gotta get that one!

I have made one of Elvis' costumes--white with the stand-up collar. To make the collar stiff, I used a piece of plastic canvas and cut it down to fit the neckband. Tacked it in and also tacked the corners of the collar to the jacket for it to stay. Used glue on jewels from the craft store. LOTS OF WORK!!!!!Shelly53@longlines.com

Thanks Shelly, I'll have to try that. I know I have some plastic canvas is my stash of craft supplies. I'll have to dig it out.

I know it is going to be a lot of work. He gave me a picture of what he would like for it to look like. Yikes! Lots of studs and jewels!

I'll try to post a picture if I ever finishe it.
