another 'what kind of' sewing machine ????

Hi!

I usually hang out at the Kitchen Table forum, and they recommended I post over here.

I have to get a new sewing machine. I dont have any preference of brand. What I want is one with a drop-in bobbin, automatic tension control, and a lever to make it stitch in reverse. I hate the one I have where I have to hold in a button to make it sew in reverse for any length.

I keep seeing a "convenient push-pull" clutch advertised. What does that mean????

Does anyone know of a website where I could put in the options I want, and it will tell me which brand to look at?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

I think you'll just have to go to a dealer and try them out. I have a button for reverse and it isn't a problem. I don't stitch in reverse for very far! love my Brother NX400. See what you can try out and have fun.

The push-pull clutch means when you wind the bobbin, you don't have to loosen the flywheel. The bobbin fits on top of the machine and you simply push the bobbin to the side to wind it.
I like Janome machines; they don't have a lever for reverse, they have the button you push. Most have the buttons now.

Sandra, right off the bat - No to oil from the hardware store. Look in your sewing machine manual for oiling instructions. Not all machines require oil - others require alot. Your manual will also tell you exactly where to oil, how often, and what kind. You must follow the directions exactly! If you can't find the manual, look online, but do not oil it until you find out. This is important!

Wow! What a wide open question! LOL A lot depends on the amount of money you want to spend. Machines have quite a range of prices from less than $50.00 to over $10,000. and from the most basic straight stitch only, to one that will do most everything except cut out your project, and everything in between. I would suggest you go to the websites of the manufacturers like Singer, Brother, Janome, Bernina, Babylock etc. and see what the different machines can do. A google search of sewing machines will get you started. Once you decide on the features you must have, then find a store that carries those machines and do a test run. Take some of your denim with you so you will know it sews properly on that particular fabric. I wish you luck and know that you will find the perfect machine for you. You didn't say if your present machine is broken or not. I'm hearing that it basically does everything you want it to do except buttonholes. If that's the case, do a search for buttonhole attachments for your machines' make and model. They attach to your machine in the place of a presser foot and have varying size cams to make the size buttonhole you want. Unless, of course, you just want to spend the money on a new one.

Older Singers have a good reputation around this forum. Some of us dearly love our older T&S machines. I am sure you will be more than happy with your White and don't forget you should get as much help learning your machine from your sewing machine store as you would have if it had been a fancy new machine. Don't be afraid to ask them questions - even over the phone. Who knows maybe you will trade in the White in a few years for something else that caught your eye. I am a firm believer that alot of those lovely trade-ins are worth more than the latest fad machine in the long run. Let us know how you make out and good luck. Budster

My Viking has a button for reverse. When I push it twice it stays in reverse until I push it again.

Huh. I would never have guessed that's what push-pull clutch meant! Glassquilt, thanks for the tip. I'll look a little closer at Viking. Simplicity makes a machine that has the lever for reverse, but the user reviews I've read say the tension adjustment's a mess to deal with.

Wish I could go somewhere and try out a bunch of them, but the SewnVac dealer here is a joke, and the closest other dealers are 70 miles away.

Any other ideas?

Just a thought but if you're thinking of spending big bucks why not drive the 70 miles and check out the other dealers in person. Take a friend and make a day of it.

My first Singer had a lever for reverse and my next one has a button. I still don't know why I traded the first one in. I really liked that lever. If I ever see the machine again, I will buy it. But I agree about the 70 miles. What a day you could have -trying different machines, have lunch, etc. Here we would be yelling ROAD TRIP!!!!

Gee Jannaz my "new" machine is a 1956 Singer 319W. It is black and has levers and discs to do different stitches. I bought it from an ad in the paper for $50 and it is in a cabinet. There were only four discs with it and I think there should be 24. The lady called me today and said she found the other discs and also a box of accessories. It is really dirty. I will need to have it serviced but I think I am going to have fun with it. I dont sew very well or very much but I am eager to try all the different stitches.
