Questions about die cutting

Hi All,

I'm usually over on the quilting forum (as that's my hobby) but I've recently learned that the same die cutting machines scrap bookers use can be used to cut fabric.

I am looking at a Sizzix machine that is under $100 but I have some questions I thought some on here could answer.

How do you get dies for the exact shape/size you want? Is that something you could make yourself or does a manufacturer have to create them?

Does it waste much material?

For example, with quilting, you might want a ton of 5" squares. If you cut them yourself, you could take an 10" square and cut it into 4 5" squares. But I'm wondering with the die cutting machine -- are they cut OUT of the middle of something, where you'd be wasting material around each square? If so -- are we talking about 1/4" of material or inches? I hope I'm making sense.

I asked a vendor and they said "It would not waste much material" which really didn't tell me anything...

Also -- if anyone on here has the sizzix (or knows of another good die cut machine for home use) if you've ever cut fabric with it -- any ideas on whether or not more than one layer could be cut at a time?

I have a sizzix and you can put just enough paper to cover the metal cutting strips to get the shape you want. So if you take the time to find a scrap (doesn't take long once you get a pile of scraps from other projects)it wastes very little.

As for the size of the cut-outs, u are pretty much stuck with what is offered by manufacturer. But one die can often be used in several ways, i.e. some shapes can be piled on top of each other to make such things as flowers.

Hi:

I saw this posting and decided to post as I have been so happy with my die cutting machine from Accucut. It cuts eight to 10 layers of fabric at a time. You can add fusible web if you are doing appliquÃ© quilts.

I bought a GrandMARK die cutting machine in August 2007. I am a beginning quilter...started about two and a half years ago. I was becoming frustrated with my inaccurate cutting resulting in wasting fabric and pieces that didn't fit together well. I was ready to give up quilting as I just wasn't happy as to how my projects were turning out. I began looking for a die cutting machine as I had seen some die cut fabric on some websites.

I found accucut's website and found the customer representative to be very pleasant and helpful.

I bought the grandmark machine along with the 8" quilt block starter set. You can also buy a 10" or 12" quilt block set. With any of the three quilt block starter kits you can make 36 different blocks with the dies you get with the machine. This is a link to a two page pdf on accucut's website which shows the dies included in the set and the blocks that can be made with the dies.

I am very pleased as it is a real joy to use. I find that I waste very little fabric. The pieces fit together so beautifully.

Some of the current quilting magazines have coupons which I believe can be used for up to 20% off on your order.

I agree it may seem a little pricey but for me it is an investment which has made my quilting hobby far more enjoyable.

It's a job to keep up with cutting off the flowers of fennel, for sure. Some years I do try to cut them off before they bloom, and other years, I just don't want to put forth the effort because it is a continuous battle. But, they do put out more foliage if you do cut the flowers off. I haven't done that this year, and, of course, I just have stalks now. When the days get a bit shorter and temps cool down a bit, the foliage will begin to grow back. I have had the frothy foliage overwinter in some years, reflecting a startling green against the brown background of the winter garden. I don't think cutting it back will induce much growth for the time being, but you could certainly try it with a couple plants and see how its does for you. its quite possible that you may have little white roots poking out (after all that is how it generally starts). To prevent mold most people dip into a 5% bleach solution when storing their cuttings. Additionally it has been said that spritzing with hydrogen peroxide can help combat mold. From your description I would wait, my guess (sight unseen as it is) is that you probably have nothing to worry about. (of course a pic or two would be helpful to be sure). ~Chills

Andrew, I do not know who gave you that info, but I have never found that to be true. I have rooted literally nearly 1000 cuttings over the year and have never had an issue with them flowering the following year. The only thing I can think of is that maybe the root system would be more established the following season if you keep it growing all winter. The issue is that you will have to deal with Mites and other issues if you keep them indoors all winter under lights. Again I personally would your newly rooted plants go dormant depending on their root system, they can establish them selves next growing season. Good luck

I would not think it will kill the azalea. I suspect that the woody bottom half lacks foliage due to lack of sunlight but I cannot tell what else is hiding in those branches (fungal issues, etc). Dead wood like that is a common problem that I used to have in Atlanta with some big azaleas. Where are you located by the way? While in Atlanta, I once tried doing some special pruning to let some sun inside but eh, it did not improve things much. And they took a long time to show new growth, about a month I think. I did some selective pruning and not a crew cut. Maybe that would have helped more. Hints: I would recommend pruning as soon as they are done blooming (it usually takes about 2 weeks or so to finish blooming). Do not wait until June or so to prune as some azaleas may have already begun developing new flower buds but, exactly when actually depends on one’s geographical location. I usually do rejuvenation pruning in thirds. On year 1, I prune a third of the bush or the third longest branches or the top third. On year 2, I prune the next third. And then on year 3, I do the rest. Prune to remove crossing branches, and admit light and air. With azaleas (and also with small leafed rhodies), you may prune anywhere along the stem. These plants have invisible dormant growth buds nearly everywhere. They will usually go into action as soon as you prune near them. Note: with large leafed rhodies, you have to cut above a growth joint. Sometimes a healthy plant can be suddenly cut to 6" above the ground and it will come back, but you have some risk so, if you were to do this, do it only if the azaleas get a lot of sun. And yes, dormant buds beneath the bark, will sprout to form new growth after severe pruning too but not much if the plant is located in heavy shade. One can open/thin the canopy and then remove some of the top such that the bottom gets more light which induces new growth. When the new growth has gotten large enough then you can remove the rest of the growth at the top. If you see signs of fungal problems in the areas you are pruning, consider applying a fungicide then. I would also apply HollyTone (after pruning) to encourage growth. Pinching can be used to enhance plant form. Pinch out emerging new soft new shoots. Dead, diseased or damaged branches can be pruned at any time. To prevent losing Spring 2021 flower buds, do not prune in the Fall. Not pruning then will also prevent the plant from getting into “grow mode” just as an early frost suddenly appears from nowhere. Dead wood and plant debris with fungal issues should be thrown in the trash.

The only dies that will RELIABLY cut fabric are steel rule dies and the only company that still makes those are Accucut www.accucut.com and Sizzix.

Other dies, for the Cuttlebug for example, are wafer dies, and will not reliable cut through fabric. They can only do a layer at a time and the fabric must be stabilized and fairly thin.

There is one company out there that will custom make steel rule dies www.cross-cut.com but they are hard to reach, take a long time and there is always a chance you may never see your die. Only pay with a credit card you can dispute the charge with if you want to take a chance on them.
