Have you seen mildew on 'Major Wheeler' specifically? One of that cultivar's main selling points is its resistance to PM. I'd have to pay more attention to say it was 'Major Wheeler'. I also live in the wet wet mountains. The last two years have been even more wet. Dry is much better for less powdery mildew. The conditions and location in the particular garden they are in may not help either.

do you like the location? because that is above all the most important thing. this is a really nice house. adding and removing walls to change the layout seems very possible here. plus it's all one level! win-win! for a temporary solution, your room divider idea sounds great. I love your idea of a bookcase - it will allow partial visual cover while allowing natural light to pass through and not feel so closed in (be sure to securely anchor the end to the wall). if you want to talk impossible, come over to my house. practically no "normal" way to put upper cabinets in the kitchen, small bedrooms, tiny closets. the layout makes it nearly impossible to add or remove walls to change these things. and it's a split level -- four levels! your house seems very workable compared to mine.

Regarding the grout color, we chose Mapei Keracolor U in biscuit. The other section of the kitchen that I mentioned I completed already was done with this grout. I learned (the hard way) that its easy to overwash a grout like this. When you read reviews of this grout product in general many people complain that it turns out much lighter than its supposed to and blame the product for it. Unfortunately it came out lighter than I wanted like those reviews stated but it is definitely from overwashing because right along the edges where I couldn't get to well with the sponge, its actually the right color; everywhere else its uniformly almost white. A sample "dollop" mixed from the same bag and left to harden on a paper plate showed that the product itself is the color its supposed to be. Mapei does sell "grout refresh" that contains colorants with their existing color options so that could be an option. I do wonder if biscuit itself might actually be too light for this tile anyway.
