My real question is:

How do you think this piece looks?

It's photoshopped so please excuse that.

Here's the whole story

I'm having an entertainment center built to sit under my wall mounted tv. It will hold all components plus center speaker and subwoofer. It's been built but without the necessary room in the center area for both the center speaker and the subwoofer, necessitating the subwoofer to sit on the floor which I don't want. The builder is willing to build me a whole new one but I love what he's done and would rather he modify this one.

Below is what it looks like now. What I'm proposing is to eliminate the center drawer and elongate the center doors (with the black speaker fabric in them since the speakers sit in there) which will give enough room for both speakers.

Will elongating the doors look terrible?

It is a gorgeous piece-- love it! I do prefer the look with the drawers across the top but since that won't work for you, the extended doors it must be.

Here are some resources on sound-reducing construction. The one immediately below, and the one that is hyper-linked, look pretty good. The other one (''Suppressproducts'') might just be an advertisement for their products, I am not sure. Basically sound is vibration that is transmitted from the source to your ear by rigid materials (sound travels well through hard materials like wood) and air. To reduce sound, you want to reduce the transmission of vibration. Air gap is better than a rigid connection. A heavy, soft material (e.g. rubber) is better than an air gap. Techniques are: - Double layers of drywall with dampening material like the referenced ''green glue'' between them (not simply screwing one sheet of drywall to the other) - Staggered studs w/ separate floor plates (essentially making two walls, no physical connection from one side to the other) - Sheet of sound dampening material between the staggered studs (reducing sound transmission through the airspace) - Sealing openings in the walls (electrical boxes, holes for plumbing, gaskets around and under door frame) - Special doors, or (less good) a conventional solid door, or (maybe an in-between alternative) a conventional door w/ a sound dampening layer on one side. - Dampening material between subfloor and joists, and between ceiling drywall and joists - Sound-proofing paint (I've not heard of this stuff before, I am skeptical it does much) Since the bathroom is a small space, you can use these techniques without too much additional expense, and just the loss of about 6'' if using staggered studs and double drywall layers. http://www.soundproofingcompany.com/index.php?/library/articles/elements_of_room_construction http://www.supressproducts.com/soundproofing-articles/Soundproof-Sheetrock.html Here is a link that might be useful: Link

I can see Chippendale on the house you posted at Fri, Apr 25, 14 at 18:12. But, the photo of your house looks more like the one you posted at Thu, Apr 24, 14 at 19:30. That rendering does not look like an obvious match for Chippendale, to me. I guess it rests on which two renderings are closer to the look your house will have when finished. When do you need to decide? I understand why you see the cable as modern, but to me it is more casual that modern. That said, what i "hear" is that you don't like, so I would not even entertain it anymore. I would ask the architect for alternates or variations on the chippendale, and consider those. How lovely those verandahs will be no matter what! enjoy

Stair runners -- yay or nay?

When we purchased our home we had all the floors refinished and I thought I'd leave the stairs bare. That lasted a few months when I began to notice tiny little scratches on the oak. In 32 years we've only had 2 runners on the staircase. We replaced the first when we redecorated. It was about 20 years old and there was very little sign of wear or dirt. It was a good carpet - an Axminster wool with a small pattern. I don't like our current runner nearly as well since it's solid. As for Pledge on the stairs .....one year after returning from a long road trip DH thought he'd surprise me by having my Suburban detailed. It did look great but they applied Armour All to the running boards which not only made them shiny but slippery too. I didn't realize it until I stepped up and then promptly slid off. Glad you had the bannisters to grab - I banged my shin on the edge of the running board and had a nasty looking bruise for a week or two. I think you'll like having the carpeted stairs.

I do think we live in a disposable world. When my parents were married, you bought really good stuff and you intended to keep it "forever"! And as you got a bigger house, you got more furniture. Now, with so many outlets selling so much "cheap" (inexpensive) merchandise, it is not a "forever" purchase but rather for the season or until one tires of it. I remember toasters and coffeepots were a "one time" purchase. Now they are disposable -- if yours stops working, you just pitch and buy a new one. Decor is like that too -- especially holiday decor (any holiday, Fourth of July, Halloween, Thanksgiving and of course, Christmas). It's what is trendy that year. I know one lady who buys all new Christmas decorations each year -- she has a theme (usually by color) and instead of packing it all away, she puts it in a garage sale in the spring. She wants it gone so she can come up with something different next year. I also have a friend who buys new living room furniture every three or four years. It's not worn, it's not broken. She's just tired of it and wants something different. And some of that disposable has something to do with trends in the marketplace. And that's what they want you to do -- change your decor to the "latest" and "greatest"! If you don't think "life" is disposable, just drive past a garage sale -- and see the stuff they offer for sale. Even thirty years ago, that wouldn't happen. Martha

No.

It looked fine to me in the first photo.

When I saw the second photo I liked it better BUT since it is not going to work for you go with the longer doors. That is much better than having a component sit on the floor.

This reminds me of the customer kiosk at my office. When they built it, ten years ago, whoever took the measurements to make the form holders for the deposit slips must have just eyeballed it instead of using a real tape measure. Once it was in place, it looks good and has four different sets of slots for us to fill with forms, except that the forms are approx. 1/16 of an inch too long for the slots. It makes for a little mickey mouse exercise in frustration. You should have bought your builder a nice Craftsman tape measure before he began your project!

I actually like the look of the first piece just a little better. And if that style fits all the components, resulting in a clean, cord-free environment, so much the better!

I'm with Red. And if the guy is willing to change it buy him that Craftsman tape measure as a thank you. I carried a small ten foot one in my purse until I lost it while visiting back home last month. If it had just broken I could have gotten it replaced for free!
Since it will have to be replaced I'd look for speaker fabric in a color that better matches the wood tone.

Excellent, thanks for your opinions. Actually the reason why it's not right is due to a series of miscommunications which were mostly but not totally his fault. He ended up building it before getting my approval on drawings (totally his fault) which is why he was willing to start over from scratch if I wasn't happy. He's a WONDERFUL carpenter who built in some bookcases for me a few years ago and did a fantastic job at the perfect price.

When he brought it over he kept saying, I just want you to be happy. In fact, the piece is just so beautiful - the cherry wood just glows - and he did such a great job with it, I can't imagine not accepting it. I think he'll be happy to modify it instead of starting over!

He certainly does beautiful work. Sounds like he's proud of his work and wants his customers to be completely happy.

i think the first pic is even better myself! I like that look.

I would go with that - keep him happy in case you need anything else built. that's beautiful work!

just next time remind him to get approval first...

does he live in AZ? can he move here? lol!

LOL, we're in Texas. He definitely does do beautiful work and I'm hoping to have him build me more furniture in the future. Thanks again for helping me decide!
