You can get away with chrome bath fixtures differing from the others, but where the other stuff is concerned, I'd find a complimentary pattern.

I'm not sure what you mean by "stick with". Are you asking if I'd make all the rest uniform or "stick with" brushed nickel as in it'd be okay with the chrome or because it's similar in color to the chrome?

I'd probably pick my fixtures based on what color the walls were going to be.

I went with all chrome in the guest bath...knobs, lighting, plumbing. It's nice and clean and bright.

I would definitely stick with the same finish for all plumbing fixtures. I think you can be more relaxed with knobs, and lighting. I'd generally keep the bath accessories the same as the plumbing...towel bars, tp holder.

What you plan sounds acceptable. It seems like, instead of matching finishes, the objective seems to be ensuring the "theme" is consistent, such as vintage, modern, traditional, etc.

For example, there would be more room for mixing in a vintage bathroom, where individual items would seem to have been chosen and used at different times. A modern theme lends itself to matching finishes because it's assumed you used current sources (allowing for more matching). And then there's a mix of everything in between. Unless your choices are really disparate, if you like them and they "fit" your look, they'll be fine.
