I was looking for a heated electric throw for a friend, and came across this.

Sure is tempting to maybe buy something I was contemplating buying sometime anyway. Their prices seem 'good' if it truly something you want/need/will use, and/or give as a nice gift.

I've been thinking about a memory foam matress, and will have to ponder getting one at that price, with $1 shipping. At night I sleep for a bit, and wake up aching,, just to roll over, and repeat the same thing several times throughout the night. I bought a new mattress not long ago (nice and soft), and I can move it to the spare bedroom where the matress is in really BAD shape. I just wonder if the memory foam would keep me from waking up aching, since it reduces the pressure points. I studied and studied matresses b4 I bought the last (nice and soft) one I'm presently using. I just so want a good nights sleep.

They have dollar shipping or sometimes even free shipping very often.

I think their shipping is usually only like $2.95 (for your entire shipment) so if you don't get around to ordering something this weekend, it shouldn't cost you too much more.

Well I made purchase from these guys. They have good ratings at eBay and The Garden Watchdog and Amazon.com. I was hoping to be able to mix and match and not have to buy four packs but they said they do not sell plants that way. Here is what I got. Probably orchid mix - I believe they are well sorted by size (it is sold as small, medium or large in plastic bags, and size is as they say). Perhaps more expensive if lots needed. Repti bark is good, but many posted that it varies in size from bag to bag (also quite pricey if quantity is needed). I hardly use bark in gritty any more, since it is difficult to find right size (even if I don't mind sifting); and usually there is too much sapwood & I don't feel like picking it. I would like to find a source of good bark as I like to use it in 5.1.1

There are economical ways to amend your soil for roses. This year I found a horse ranch that gave me composted manure for nearly free. My roses loved it, so I plan to get more. I bought a fifty pound bag of alfalfa pellets at a feed store for a very good price. It took three years for me to use them all up. I can thank the gardenweb and my local rose society for that tip. When I first started growing roses, I bought a small box of alfalfa a nursery for nearly the same price as the fifty pound bag. I store the alfalfa pellets in 5 gallon orange Home Depot containers with tight fitting lids and the pellets stay fresh. This spring, I bought another 50 pound bag and split it with a friend. Starbucks Coffee Company is happy to give you used coffee grounds for free if you ask. I hope one of the starter products you bought from Heirloom Roses was Alaska Fish Fertilizer that you add to your watering can. A little goes a long way. After reading this thread, I wonder if I could mulch it up somehow. So what roses did you get, Michelle?

I want to find an optimum soil for roses as well. Mine are in clay and just never really thrived in recent years. That said, I agree with @gardengal48 that gritty mix is not an optimum soil for roses. I think of gritty as being a fast draining soil that dries out rapidly. It is a good match to succulents and cactus because those plant types are very good at sucking out a lot of moisture from a relatively dry soil. Most cactus and succulents will thrive in a soil that gets right to the point of drying out, at which point you water and the cycle of rapid water uptake and rapid drying repeats. I think of roses as a plant that likes a fast draining soil that stays moist between waterings. I think of rhododendrons as being something similar, albeit rhododendrons and azaleas like an acidic soil. I guess everyone is going to recommend 511 mix, but my hesitation in trying 511 has always been that I truly hate peat moss. Aside from not being a sustainable resource, it is very hard to get it to absorb moisture once it dries, and it tends to clump in soil and make a mess that requires repotting. With rhododendrons, I have tested with a 100% fir bark soil, and believe it or not I tested with 50% fir bark and 50% Turface. The 50/50 fir bark/Turface has proven to be an amazing acidic soil for rhododendrons. I have sister plants planted in each soil and the ones in the Turface blend have dense healthy looking leaves. I am not recommending this soil for roses or even for rhododendrons. I don't have enough experience with it yet. I am just passing along some experiments I have been doing.

RE: Memory Foam Mattress. My husband and I got married last fall and spent several months sleeping in the full size bed I grew up sleeping in. It was awkward for us to share the bed (I know many cuples that do so sucessfully) But because I had slept in the bed alone for 18 years, it was a big adjustment to share it with someone else. So we decided to get a queen. My husband has health problems so we discussed it at length and finally decided to get a tempurpedic mattress. WOW! The first night I fell in love with it. My husband is a light sleeper and it took him several weeks to adjust, but now we are both hooked. We actually hate traveling or visiting my parents because we only want to sleep in our own bed. It is amazing how comfortable it is. Word of caution though: The foam traps your body heat and can make it seem like it is hot. If you don't like to be too warm when you sleep, this might be an issue for you. In an effort to keep the electric bill low We keep our house rather cold during the winter (62-64deg) so the mattress helps hold in our body heat and makes us feel warmer, but in the summer when we are trying to restrain ourselves with the AC, it makes things quite warm. We slept only with a sheet most of the summer because it was so warm (the dog wouldn't even sleep on the bed it was too hot for him).

But all in all, we both agree that it was the best thing we have purchased since getting married (above even our house!).

Thanks for sharing your memory foam experience. I have read a lot of reports, and none of them have been a mix of the good (it being so comfortable) and the not so good (being so warm due to sinking into it).

I now think I want to give it a try, more than ever. If it is too warm in the summer, I'll just move it to the spare room, and any company I might have, will have to deal with it.
