It may be late, but you can use this tip for birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, and such.

Get all your presents from the Salvation Army store or second hand stores. Clean them up and wrap them well and no one will be the wiser. The money will also go to a good cause.

It's never too late to save money... Our Goodwill sells NEW items, as well as previously owned ones, but for low prices. Lots of great new decorative and household items are sold there. Garage sales and estate sales also provide sources for still-in-the-box new or slightly used items people are trying to get rid of.

Get to your local thrift stores by the end of December. People are clearing out their old "stuff" for newly received Christmas "stuff"; and also getting rid of unwanted Christmas gifts - all in time for the Dec. 31st tax deduction time.

Unfortunately our local "thrift" stores do not often get new items but there are times when I've been able to purchase unopened games, puzzles etc. still wrapped in original plastic..to "regift". When I had younger ones at home they didn't care if something was used as it was new to them and I made sure things were complete (game pieces etc. or made some substitues). It is never too late to start filling in loot for a birthday or Christmas with treasures found at a thrift store, so any money saved was a plus.

For nursery pots I started using old food cans, and pop bottles cut down to about 6" deep, & poke a few holes in the bottom. Seed saving from one year to the next. You can't save seed from foods you buy at the grocery store because most are hybrid varieties and won't reproduce true. You have to start with heirloom varieties, and save those seeds. Make my own compost from leaves, paper, grass and kitchen waste. You cut down on a lot of trash by composting junk mail and boxes that canned pet food comes in. Cardboard makes good compost, as does newspapers, paper grocery sacks, clothing labels, dryer lint and cereal boxes. Make your own seed starting mix from peat and perlite, because it needs to be sterile to prevent damping off and diseases that attack tender new growth. I make my own potting mix from screened compost, sand, used seed starting mix and perlite. It's especially important to have a loose, open potting mix with my nursery pots that have straight sides (cans and pop bottles) otherwise it would be too difficult to get plants out of them for up-potting. Hi Cathie, Sounds like the cable co sure has you upset. Is Satellite an alternative? The cost of cable and alternatives have been discussed here b4...I just did a search on cable tv, and there may be some suggestion found. It is against the rules here to link to another message board similar to the one here. Compare that to linking to Jenny Craig from a Weight Watchers Board, (or linking to that 'other' gardening site from here....so your post 'may' disappear...they do that from time to time. If you would like to get a hot political debate going right here on this site, you might stop by the Hot Topics Forum. Things of that nature are allowed there. cowboyind, Here I thought you were just getting a "buzzz" out of it. (;^)) Hadn't noticed that, as a matter of fact. Whether your message was hypothetical or not - the issue of the number of hypothetical hours remains the same. We earn "before-tax" money, but buy (most, i.e. non-deductible) goods with after-tax money. Which makes the concept of whether we want to exchange that amount of effort for so much money to buy certain goods even more relevant, for the number of hours is (almost) *always* larger. Another good idea along this line is, if we think that we really do want to buy the item, to ask ourselves whether we might be able to arrange to get the item at even less expense using another channel. For example, buy a (used) item at an auction, estate sale, etc. where there are quite often some really good bargains to be found. But - take care. Be sure that you know the market value of items that you desire before going, and keep your emotions in check. Sometimes, in the heat of an auction, people get their egos involved and bid items up to higher than retail value. Linens and some household accoutrements often go for next to nothing at auctions. With, often, a number of other itmes in a box - that you may be able to sell individually later in garage sales for more than you paid for the whole box, originally. So, you got what you wanted free - didn't you? Who can beat that? Unless you can get someone to pay you to take certain items off their hands. How often have you run on to such offers? Honestly before you look to save money with this plan, I think you need to look to fix the plan so it will work better because now it will feel dark and closed in. I agree; this first floor just doesn't work. You have to wander through the sunroom AND the dining room to enter the house, and then the master bedroom eats up the whole back wall. You can find LOADS of plans similar to this one with better flow. Here are two examples -- the first one's not quite 1900 sf, the second is just under 1600:Both of these houses' exteriors are very similar to the one you're presenting -- -- but imagine yourself walking in from the garage (as you'll do every single day). Isn't the path better? Imagine your boys coming in from the back yard. Isn't it better? Note the front door entrance too; you want a bit of a transition from outside to inside. Mainly this is about good flow. Okay, neither of those have the two-story great room (that's what you're asking for -- a two story great room; an open floor plan would mean the living-kitchen-dining run together without walls between), so here's another similar plan with good flow AND the two-story great room -- it's about 1850 sf: Note that in these plans the rooms are more proportional to one another, and the traffic patterns are better -- and the master bedrooms aren't hogging the prime backyard access. Bbq'ing will be something we do, but the walkway to the back deck doesn't bother me as much as taking away or rearranging the back of the house would. Wait, wait, you'd rather walk all the way around the house (or through your bedroom) every time you want to use the back yard or barbeque for years and years and years ... instead of altering a drawing now? I mean this in the nicest possible way: Are you perhaps burned out on this process? If you need to take a break, do so! Doing it right is better than doing it fast, and complete lack of public room backyard access is very much not doing it right. You could save money by having only one sink in the bathrooms. A good idea; the master vanity especially just doesn't have enough space to support two sinks, and by using the space for sinks, you give up drawers for storage. I'd also remove the door that divides the boys' bathroom; doors like that are always in the way and aren't really helpful -- two kids can easily share a bathroom without being able to close off part of it. How do you plan to use the den upstairs? Will it overlook the downstairs? Do you live in an area where basements work? If so, would that provide the space you want for your boys' area? In the right areas, basements are super cheap, and you could plan to finish it off later -- like when your boys are in middle school and want some space away from you. If you're really counting pennies, lop off the kids' space -- it falls into the area of "nice but not necessary". Get rid of the fireplace. They are expensive. I personally wouldn't lose the fireplace, but I would consider a woodstove, which can be less expensive. Keep in mind too that fireplaces don't all cost the same amount. High-end fireplaces take the brick or stone to the ceiling inside and have masonry chimneys outside. Lower-priced fireplaces utilize inserts and have little inside brick/stone ... and vent with only a small flue /no chimney or a wooden stack that houses the flue. Use carpeting instead of hardwood or laminate. I'd go with laminate instead of carpet. Laminate has a longer lifespan and is more forgiving with kids. Eliminate the sink in the laundry. Good call. We had a sink in our laundry room when I was growing up; it was a place for junk to collect. As an adult, I've never had one and have never once said, "I wish..." We could build larger, but the most important thing to us is that I am able to stay at home with the boys if I wanted/needed to and also that we can support them when they begin to drive and go off to college. Building below your means is always wise. Also, if we made the sunroom have a long hallway rather than an outdoor walkway would this help cut down cost? I wouldn't mind a long hallway to hang pictures etc on the way out the back door. Like a breezeway? Perhaps with a sliding glass door on each end? That's a practical choice. Cpartist, where else would we put it? We want an open floor plan with Windows across the front and a loft at the top for our boys. Anywhere except where it is -- the bedroom is really what's throwing off your whole plan. At 1/3 of your first floor, it's as large as your living room, and it's oversized for this plan -- worst, it's preventing you from having backyard access. You can have an open floorplan with windows across the front and a space for your boys without this problem. Google "3 bedroom cape cod" or "3 bedroom Southern House with Porch". You'll find loads and loads of plans with just what you're wanting. Note too that if you bring the stairs to a more conventional center-of-the-house location (essentially flipping the stairs and the kitchen), you will have those windows in the kitchen. About the stairs: Switchback stairs are sf hogs. You could trim your square footage by going with a straight set of stairs. Or you could make the stairs do double-duty by placing a half-height closet underneath. On the subject of the bedroom, if you steal 2" from the bedroom (which you can easily afford to give up), you can enlarge your master closet enough to add 1/3 more storage space. I'm no clotheshorse, but I can't image not wanting this. I agree no access to the deck from the kitchen is a LITTLE inconvenient, but to be honest we had a deck right off of the kitchen in our last home and we never used it...ever. I think everyone else here disagrees with the qualifier "little", and the person who pointed out it'd make your house impossible to resell is right. Bpathome, we would like to cut off about $10-15,000. We are almost at our target budget so I am curious as to how much removing the third door to the garage would cut back (without downsizing.) Building always comes with surprises. If you want to stick to your target budget, you need to begin fairly well under it (at least 10%). Removing the garage door without downsizing will save a few hundred for the door ... but you're talking pennies in the grand scheme of things, and then you'd have a garage with reduced function. I agree with you: No point in this cut. We've a two story foyer in our past 2 houses and our next house will have no 2 story anything because the sound transmission is really annoying, imo. I used to think lofts were great -- until we rented a lake house with a loft. A person watching TV in the living room disturbed a person reading or napping in the loft -- and vice-versa. This was made worse in the house we rented because everything in the house was "hard" -- wooden floors, shutters on the windows, no drapes, the only soft thing was the sofa /chairs. This is not something you want in your everyday house. This isn't about your family being close or not -- as your kids grow older, you'll want some separate space. You're not going to want to listen to their music or them play video games with their friends. Our family's very close too, but that doesn't mean we don't need a space where a couple people can watch TV while someone else is doing homework. You're going to want to make a phone call without hearing the boys playing upstairs; they're going to want to call girls without you in earshot. However, this is only a 1900 sq ft home. We aren't trying to make the powder room it's own wing. If you have suggestions on moving it somewhere that is cost efficient be my guest at letting me know where. If you go with the breezeway idea, the powder room would work great in that area. It'd also be convenient to the backyard. I absolutely loved this plan before posting it on this forum. You guys have picked it apart and not had any positive feedback...except a few of you. I still love it, but I am concerned guest will come over and instead of seeing its charm and open-ness will see the same things you guys have see Honestly, I don't mean to be harsh, but I see no redeeming features on the first floor -- I like the exterior very much, and the upstairs is nice. Other things I can see that'd save money: Look at this circled spot on your plan:Exterior walls are quite expensive compared to interior walls; thus, this walkway is extremely expensive. It'd be cheaper to "bring the house over to meet the garage". Porches aren't as expensive as interior space, but they also aren't cheap. Consider downsizing the porch from full-width ... to partial width ... or even just a stoop over the door -- this could probably be a difference of 6-8K just on the front of the house -- and you could go with a deck out back instead of a porch:

I used to volunteer at a local thrift store and I wanted to let you know that Mondays are the best day to shop. Why? Because during the weekend various church groups and scouts will stock the store.

Also, try and find a thrift store in an richer area. A thrift store in the next town has volunteers from an more upscale area and they donate great items.

I had rather not buy my family gifts than pass on used things. They certainly would not do that to me. If I saw something I think my sis would like I would buy it for her and tell where I got it. I shop in thrift store every other week or so for like new hard back books. I have built a nice library of over 400 books. I also check for movies and jewelry.

I don't see what is wrong with a used gift. Assuming the item is in working condition and good shape, why disdain it because it doesn't smell of new plastic and the mall?

This feeling that a used gift is somehow a veiled insult (I'm not good enough for you to spend more money buying the exact same item with the exact same functionality from the mall?)

Or it's about labels...I bet if I post photos of the excellent condition "retro" wooden game I gave my nephew, ppl would say, oh, but that's retro, that's different. Nope. Retro is still second hand. Vintage, antique, period: all just labels for used and second hand.

Older items are almost always of better quality for less money, they are more ethical purchases than most (not all) new items, and I am myself charmed to know the giver looked through flea markets and second hand shops to find this one unique item for me.

Hey, I've known people on both sides of this spectrum. You have to know how the person who is to receive your gift feels, and then examine how you really feel about them. Hubs' sisters were always insulted at the thought of a used item as a gift. But I think it's because they were raised so poor, they never got anything that wasn't used. Some of them, I like well enough to respect their wishes, so I try to buy them something new that I think they would like. Some of the other sisters are so "snotty" about everything that I kind of delight in giving them something I've gotten at a Thrift Shop. One time, I bought an old Christmas sweater, wrapped it up and gave it to Hubs' youngest snotty sister. Oh, the look on her face was hilarious. Then I followed it up with something really nice. She was pretty ugly to me immediately after the first gift, so much so that I almost didn't hand her "real" gift to her at all. But that was worth it, too, because she was embarrassed then about what she said to me. Hubs' sisters also didn't appreciate a home-made gift, either.

I think the difference is this.... Some people measure everything by dollar value, and for them what was purchased speaks for you as to how much you think your relationship with that person is worth. If you go to a garage sale and get something for a dollar and give that to one person, but then, go to a department store and buy the same thing for another, that person who gets the one that only cost a dollar feels like you don't value them.

On the other hand, buy a gold necklace for $10 at a garage sale and give it to one person. Take that same $10 to a department store and buy a little bitty bottle of perfume to give to your person who has to have "something new". (make sure you include the tag, they say they want it so they can exchange it if they want but actually they also want it as proof that you did buy it "new". Somebody's sure to get insulted because they only got a bottle of perfume while someone else got a gold necklace. I wonder who?

I think gift-giving for specific holidays is just something cooked up by the marketing community, to force us to buy something we ordinarily wouldn't. I see things, still in their packages, at garage sales and this is testament to that fact. So I don't go in much for that at holidays, and everyone who knows me, knows that. I much prefer to give something to someone I care for because I know they want or need it, and WHEN they want or need it. Most of my friends are tickled pink with their presents. Recently, I gave a Squeeze-O to a gardening friend that, when new, costs a couple of hundred dollars. I was able to find it for much less at an estate sale. She was thrilled. I also gave a Marcato pasta maker to another friend. It sells for more than $50 when new. That friend didn't give a rip about what I paid for it. She had wanted one for a long time and couldn't justify spending the money. For my friends to whom it is so important to receive something "new", I just don't buy them gifts very often, because I can't afford to. Usually when I receive something from them, it's something I don't need, don't want. Usually some kind of fancy lotion that came from a shop at the Mall. This is, in a way, insulting to me, if you want to get right down to it, because here I've got something I won't use now, and I'm obligated by this gift to go out and buy something for full price that I think my "gift giver" will want, so that now I won't insult HER. (I guess I COULD take it to the same store where she bought it, and exchange it for something else, and then give that to HER. Except that usually you're expected to have a gift ready to hand over when they give you yours.

*sigh.....* Sooo complicated.

It has to do with the way the giver spends money, imo. If they buy themselves new things all the time and give thrift store gifts then it is cheap and stingy.

I always try to give thoughtful, appropriate gifts to people. If an item looked brand new, and really, I do mean brand, brand new, and it came from a thrift store, and was appropriate and thoughtful, then I would give it as a gift.

My son`s fairly recently-acquired lady friend got me a nice long winter coat a year ago last Christmas.

It was in good shape (apart from half of the belt buckle having gone on extended vacation) ...

... and she was very concerned about letting me know that it was acquired at the thrift store.

To which my son replied that she need have no concern about that - that his Dad patronized them and would give her more respect for having been careful with a dollar.

I feared that I`d left it somwhere, when last fall rolled around, as I couldn`t find it ...

... but it turned up, about a month and a half ago, hidden under some other things.

It`s really soft ... and has a zip-out lining.

The difference between "second hand" and "antique" is only a matter of time. I wouldn't be at all bothered to learn that the perfect gift came from a second hand store.

When visiting at a friend's on Thanksgiving, she gave me a soft, used, cotton, dishtowel that she referred to as vintage, that she had found at the Goodwill. She said, "I saw this and thought that you would probably like it." She was right!

I used to collect/ buy a lot of old costume jewelry. Very nice things. I bought at garage sales, antique shows, etc. One year I picked two pretty pins, wrapped them up and gave them to my two snotty sisters in law. Both appreciated their gifts and didn't realize or mind they weren't "new". But I would never intentionally buy gifts at a thrift shop. One year my cheapo/nasty MIL shopped at a dollar store for her Christmas gifts. She gave me a junky-looking cutting board in the shape of a pig. I'm glad she saved money but I thought the choice of gift was tacky. A batch of cookies would have been nicer.

When you see a traffic signal go yellow, half a block ahead ...

... if your car has an automatic transission - take your foot off of the dang throttle!

Mine has a standard transmission ... so, unless there may be a traffic problem, pedestrians that may do unexpected things, etc., or another car ready to drawl up my tailpipe ... I often push in the clutch and turn off the ignition.

I've become fairly adept at arriving a short distance behind the last stopped car about when the light changes, and that car starts moving just before my car arrives, so I don't need to stop.

Check this out with your local autorities, however, before you try it, as when I spoke of it in this forum before, some folks said that it's against the law in their jurisdiction.

An engine that isn't running ... isn't using any gas.
