Making a Duvet from old sheet set

I'm on the east coast and snowed in, so right now I'm making a twin size duvet out of an old set of queen sized sheets. Cutting up the fitted sheet was a challenge. I used the decorative top of the flat sheet to fold over the top.

It has been an interesting challenge - keeps me from getting bored:)

I'm in the process of doing the same thing. I have been using a couple of sets of sheets to make "skirts" for the countertops and the cutting table in my sewing room. I'm using a sort of brick red and black. I cut bias strips out of the red to make large piping to go around the duvet.

How are you closing yours? I'm going to have an overlap in the back with seven red buttons. I haven't gotten it all sewn together yet.

fnmroberts - beautiful bedroom! Yes, my bed looks almost exactly like yours. I'm looking for sheets elsewhere since the ivory PB everyday sheet that I bought is too dark. Their ivory in the next sheet set up is lighter but says only fits mattresses up to 16". I need 18" minimum for my pillowtop. Tibbrix - thanks for the laundry whitening tip. I could use this to whiten up DD's sheets and bath towels. louislinus - I sometimes like a mix of ivory and white too, but wasn't sure if it would work so well with the porcelain blue thrown in the mix. I noticed DD"s towels and sheets seemed to get dingier than my ivory ones. If you're switching to ivory, I would recommend Costco's Charisma towels. They're a creamier ivory (remind me of French vanilla ice cream) but very pretty and soft and seem to lighten a bit over time. jjam - thanks so much for the link. I was thinking of checking RH since I have a rewards certificate to use. The color does look more like the creamy white I prefer, and they're Egyptian cotton with deep pockets! msrose - I do love my older light ivory sheets with the PB ivory, but I had to replace the fitted sheet and can't find one to match. The PB sheet I bought is so much darker. When I went linen shopping yesterday it seemed every ivory was so different. Some were more beige, others were more yellow. The RH link jjam posted looks promising though and I think RH sells boxspring covers too.

I have had jersey sheets (tshirt knit) and liked them year round. I had a set of microfiber that were much lighter than the jersey ones), and my son has some that are average weight and very soft. I also have micrfleece that are very thick and very warm -- winter only. They also take up a LOT of room in the linen cabinet when not on the bed. They are all very different. Make sure you know what you are getting.

I'm guessing that when someone buys a duvet especially one with a print, they tend to prefer a solid sheet set or piece that is color coordinated with it because a print on both could be a little too busy. Solid sheets are more flexible and easy to find. From a manufacturer's perspective, since there's so many color options one can choose from, it makes that printed duvet all the more available to the masses.

You can get all kinds of seat cushions in all kinds of materials or have some custom made. That was quite common for those kinds of chairs back in the day when they were made. My grandma had cushions on all her cane and rush seated chairs. I have a rush-seat chair set in my kitchen dining area, and I have to say that cushions are not a bad idea for those chairs anyway, in the comfort department! And if you ever feel like mixing it up, you can always get chair covers for the chairs. They are pricey, makes me want to learn to sew just to make them. They always have awesome home sewn chair covers on display in the sewing store in my town, to lure you in! You can also mix it up on that table with tablecloths or runners and/or placemats! If I ever do learn to sew, my first project will be placemats!

am making the same thing, but had to solve the dust ruffle problem first. dust ruffles never work on my bed, then i found something called a swedish wrap on a blog from sweden and i am going to try that. Have the sewing done. Install is tomorrow.

the swedish wrap is essentially a long piece made the width and some inches more than a dust ruffle but not ruffled then placed like a dust ruffle, the top edge is folded in and pinned with safety pins to the top of the box springs. The mattress placed on top like always. You have a dust ruffle but without the ruffle. I trimmed the bottom edge with an eyelet lace. Made the comforter cover but have not tried it on the comforter yet. It may need adjusting. Found that the pillowcases were too tight so I have been sewing in a strip to enlarge them. They were off grain as well. Last time I buy a sheet set at a bargain place.Made in China I think..
