'clean' layout with lots of good pictures

I like this scrap-book concept, but most of the pages I've seen have as much or more "fluff" than pictures. I have TONS of pictures from a very good 35mm camera. My scrapbook would be a thousand pages if I spead out the images the way most people seem to do in their scrapbooks.

Does anyone have any suggestions/links for layouts with more PICTURES and fewer stickers/borders/fillers??

I'm interested in that too- I take a lot of pictures. Besides that, unless it is a GREAT picture, I want more than one picture per page!

I have seen a few good layouts on dmarie, but you really have to sort through everything else first!

I can appreciate all of your comments. I have seen many pages filled with more embellishments and less pics. I scrapbook with more pics and less embellishments. I usually average 3-4 pics or more on a page. It can be done and it looks really nice as well. It is a matter of personal taste. I pick background paper that will compliment the pics, matte them if I like and then place them on a page. I do make sure there is room for journaling because I think that is also as important.

Not many people post layouts with more than 2 pics on a page because I think that is what most people expect. I do my books how I like and don't worry about what is the "norm".

I hope this helps. I always try to remember that the focus are the pictures and not get too caught up in decorations.

You've gotten a good starting point from the previous posters. Browse magazines and online photos and you'll discover a common theme in the photos that you like. As far as white and beige, yes, "white" white can be stark and cold looking. An antique or creamier white might be a little more accommodating. And I think one of the previous posters mentioned incorporating a hint of color into the tile border. A creamy tile with a crackle glaze finish can lend depth to the tile, a subtle sense of sophistication and age. If you're unsure of the amount of color to use, then sometimes it's best to stick with neutrals for the permanent part of your installation; the tile, the flooring, the vanity if it's stained wood grain. Don't forget dark neutrals. Ebonized wood, or dark charcoal gray or even black. Incorporate a version of your color into the large colored surfaces...the wall paint and ceiling paint. If you're worried about "too much color" then use a light shade of your color on the large walls. Paint color can be changed with little effort. If you're shy using stronger colors, incorporate the strongest colors through your towels, face cloths, etc. Fabric colors can be changed with no effort. You mentioned blues, one of my favorite blue bathrooms was Casey's. Now, you may think his bathroom boring and mundane when I describe it as having light beige or even "plain white" tiled walls, and blue painted walls. Well, here you go, this does indeed look boring and lifeless, doesn't it? (Sorry Casey, that is NOT an insult. This bath is still one of my favorites if all time). But then you add a little color and: It's an indication of how "boring white tile" can become not so boring and actually quite stunning when the "boring white" is used as a backdrop, or a compliment, to a strong color. If you thought you'd someday like to change the blue to another color, then instead of using the strip of blue tile like Casey used just under the cap on his wainscot, he could have used a strip of black tile, or a strip of the black and white mosaic he used as a border on the floor. The tile would all be "neutral". The paint color becomes the main color in the room. The towels become the accent punch color.

Sher Lucky you! I've read through most of the posts - honestly got a little lost along the way. One thought - Since your range will be on exterior wall have you considered just venting straight out w/sleeker cabinet depth hood (see Rhome's) rather than up & out which will diminish the efficiency of the hood? Also, I agree re: windows & cabs for that matter to not butt right up against each other - keep everything slightly restrained w/space btwn - creates for more architecturally appealing design. Many friends whom have went the route of 2 DW's in their remodels - actually regret doing so. One is Never used - which means giving up precious space, additional costs, running plumbing - If there were a designated butlers pantry I would think that would be most useful. I cook a lot! & DW is run everyday - Typically most pots are hand washed - So, I would ultimately opt for great run of counter around the main sink for handwashed items. That's where they will land. Not sure where you ended up w/refrig & banquette seating - but that appears to be a potential bottleneck - Also trash pull out - I think the most efficient designs have trash, sink, DW - because that is the order for prep/clean up - just a thought I know how exciting it is to get to "production" but would caution once you are in production and have 2nd thoughts about function it is very costly to change. Take time, and a deep breath before signing off on plans - Don't let your excitement or others false deadlines get in the way of your getting your floor plan to meet your needs for a long time to come. best to you

Back again. We were busy again with kid activities this weekend. We also started the move out of the house for the reno. Found a house in the neighborhood to stay so we moved some furniture and stuff over to get a jump start on next weekend's big move. Lavender--I do live in Washington--Olympia to be precise. I have a great aunt and cousins over your way in Oakesdale. Where are you? I'm still working on my plan. I'm having trouble finding a way to store all of the stuff that got displaced from moving the two wall ovens to undercounter ovens. I need a few more hours in the day to have time to really concentrate on it! Got the mag. Thanks for calling it to my attention! You're right about how cute that banquette is. Round tables seem more inviting to me than rectangular. That whole space is so inviting and warm. I wish I could pull off a space as put together as that one is! My kitchen and family room would be the same location in that house if I moved the kitchen into the dining room and moved the family room into the living room. DH is still concerned that the family room will be too narrow there. We need to make sure there is enough play space for the kids as that's their main play area. After seeing that DIY hutch in BHG, it reminded me again of an idea I had a long time ago, but was dragging my feet on. I think we've decided to move the antique hutch/sideboard out of the dining room (don't know where else we'd use it) and put build a bigger one with cabs, drawers, countertop etc. like Candace Olsen. It will give us soo much more storage space. Plus, it will give that bland area some character. We decided we could also use it for serving wine and drinks during parties. More cost, but worth it. Yes, I know Cali_Wendy's kitchen. It was one of the first ones I took note of when I found this forum. It confirmed my idea of white cabs. Every time I see it I fall in love again. Rhome--I didn't want to bother you with a re-draw until I had a pretty firm grasp on it. You've got enough to do--like enjoy those new ovens!

Need layout advice - lots of space for creativity, how best to use it?

I definitely appreciate everybody's input and advice, so, thought I'd come back and give you all a little update. There are some issues with changing the layout, specifically moving the range to the interior wall. The venting is going to be problematic, because of location of the garage doors and also some HVAC equipment in the path. Would involve a rather long, inefficient run with multiple turns to avoid these things. HVAC guy basically said, Please don't move it there. Not only that, but the small wall that Karenseb suggested to remove - is part of a larger load-bearing wall. I have a healthy mid-range kitchen budget but these changes could be a real budget buster. Especially as we don't know what other surprises are lurking once demo begins. With that in mind, and my husband's wish to have the range and hood as a focal point centered between the windows, aesthetically nicer than staring at a fridge from the island seating, as well as simpler ventilation, any other suggestions? Should we keep dishwasher to the right as it is now? I plan to move the sink further down the run, ending at the right end of window instead of centered, to increase counter space on right side of range. For the few times a year I would cook a large spread of food for entertaining, I do have a butcher block island on wheels that can be rolled over to serve as surplus counter. Plus the big island directly behind. Other changes - we are leaning towards forgetting the separate oven and going with the aga range (plus my trusty Breville smart oven). I think then we would just make the beverage center section all countertop, space for Breville, and center the bar sink on that run. I asked my kitchen designer to draw up an L shaped window seat, into the alcove, maybe shelves or small upper above. As we can have lots of pantry space, with affordable shelving instead of cabinets, in the current hallway/future walk through pantry.

Well, I guess we'll just have to share our "Spartan" pages with each other! Up to this point, most of my pages are simply pictures. But I would like to do more journaling and just spice them up a bit.

I love the creative pages that can be seen on the web. When I look at them, I think how much time the person must have spent on them. I am working on a project that has a deadline and I don't have much time to embellish. I am combining two journals (DH and daughter's)together with photos from a boat trip they took last summer. I discovered that I can fullfill my creative need and get the job done by creating a border on the outside edge of a two page spread, and place up to 6-7 photos, depending on whether you crop them or not. This pulls the pages together. Some pages have Their journal entries and 1-3 photos. I came up with this idea by looking at layouts. Check out a few layouts and see what jumps out at you.

There is a book called "Simple Scrapbooks" that addresses that need. It's fairly new and I think would help. I didn't look at it very carefully when I was looking through it because I was looking at lettering rather ideas books at the time, but I remember there was more emphasis on the pics than the decorations. The goal is to get more pages done in a shorter time and the style is much more simple. HTH. Happy scrappin'!
