Adding a window to a brick house
Comments (12)I was concerned about this same issue during a recent renovation of my home. We enlarged some windows, removed others, and changed the dimension of several others. We also expanded the brick garage by about eight feet to accomodate an additional car. My house is brick veneer, meaning that the walls are framed with 2X6 lumber with an outer course of standard bricks on all exterior walls. The house appears to be a solid brick structure. Anyway, my architect assured me that the finished renovation would be seamless -- and he was right. Sections of walls were disassembled where windows and doors were altered (rather than sawn), then reassembled by a mason. Except that I know where alterations were made, I doubt that anyone else would be able to tell that any work was done. If you click on the link below, you'll see a photo album showing my newly renovated kitchen. The last two photos show the exterior of the house where new windows and a door were added. Prior to renovation, there was only a sliding glass door on the wall facing the deck. The window wrapping around the corner was added and the window area around the door totally revamped. If you look closely at the left side of the last photo, you can just see where the garage was expanded. This has now weathered in and the slight change in mortar colour has blended completely. Hope this helps. James Here is a link that might be useful: James' Renovated Brick House...See MorePergola above garage
Comments (11)What is it for? Will you be growing a rose, vine, or plant on it. I think I see some type of plants in the above photo, but sides of the pergola don't render them useful for climbing plants i.e. nothing from ground to corbels. hmmm....See MorePergola above garage doors?
Comments (21)Such interesting comments about pergolas and the like. I'd be the first to say that "decoration for decoration's sake" is not what strong architecture is about. And, certainly, if one is considering a pergola, arbor, trellis, or the like, it should be in character with and complementary to the architecture of the house, whether modern, transitional, historic or whatever. What are some values of pergolas and similar devices? Well...here's some: 1) They help link and transition the architecture and the landscape; 2) They may be excellent for appropriate plant materials; 3) They can define an outdoor area or space and make it a "place"; 4) They may create interesting and constantly changing shade patterns, i.e., a "light sculpture"; 5) They can provide shading from the hot sun; 6) Integrated with outdoor lighting, they may create an outdoor room for evening use. But, at the end of the day, as others here have said, you either like 'em or you don't. Here's some photos which illustrate some of the design options for pergolas: Pretty versatile in style and in design, don't you think?...See MoreAny recs for adding a window to an existing, exterior brick wall?
Comments (3)Look for a local, reputable, and established window installation company. Most will have no problem doing this. Be sure to discuss your options in terms of finishing the cut edge of the brick....See Moredavidandkasie
