I agree on the overwatering suspicion. Buy one of those moisture meters at walmart, they look like this and are only about 4 bucks. They aren't always fool proof, but it gives you an idea of how wet or dry your soil really is down there below the surface. In my home, my peace lily usually gets watered once every 5 days on average. It really varies, I have a smaller variety peace lily compared to yours. Secondly -- fertilize healthy plants. If a plant isn't doing well, you need to get it healthy first before fertilizing it. And make sure it's a weak fertilizer, don't use too much. For repotting, you could simply lift it out of the pot, try and shake off the soil and inspect the roots. If the roots aren't white and they are brown and mushy, that's root rot. You could cut out the bad roots and try replanting in new soil. Drainage is important, so you want a pot with a hole in it and a well draining soil (if you're just using standard houseplant potting mix, you could throw some perlite in to aide in drainage). Watering -- In the future, watch your watering. You'll definitely kill plants like this if you water everyday, even every other day. All plants need to be watered when they need it, not based on a weekly or every X days schedule. A moisture meter will help with that. Finally, don't let the water go from your kitchen sink to the plant. If you water using tap water, let the water sit for at least a day to allow chlorine and anything else the plant won't like to evaporate from the water. And you want it to be room temperature or slightly warmer, not cold water that will shock the plant. I like to fill up a gallon jug of water, let it sit out without a lid for a couple days, then i just put the lid back on and leave it on my fridge. Anytime I need to water, I just use that.

Such great ideas! I found a 1950 wheat penny today! I wonder if that was their time capsule. I found the original spot on the wall for the phone. And the most ghastly pink, black and gray wall paper! The identifyable colors of paint layers was yellow, bright green and flamingo pink. I though I'd find that off creme/dark ivory/pale yellow. I don't know what the real name of it is but that dark ivory color you find on so much old furniture. There was an off white but it wasn't that old color. And SURPRISE! It's drywall and not plaster!! But it's disintegrated and will be a pain to clean up. That will probably be tomorrow. My dumpster still hasn't arrived.....Waiting since Tuesday; called last night, he'd be here at noon today. Well, it's 6:20 now. He missed noon. I guess it doesn't matter because I'll be carrying it out in buckets so the buckets can just as well set in the garage. I left a message tonight that I would gladly come and get one of his little containers that would fit in the back of my truck. With snow coming Monday/Tuesday I really need that dumpster! If I'm here with nothing to do I'll scream!

I have goose bumps all over reading this. It absolutely never occurred to me to do such a thing. I treasure the occasional old find I come across; why would it never occur to me to *introduce* information to the future? DH's family has a lot of neglected treasures of the past; the family was once quite well-off but not since the depression. In a family house in a giant old German-type wardrobe amongst ancient family photos is an envelope, sealed, with written instructions not to open before 1900. It still hasn't been opened to my knowledge. I don't think anyone has the stomach to, frankly. It's not my family, so perhaps it doesn't matter that I haven't. But by now the mystery is codified; I can't imagine circumstances that would cause anyone to break the spell. Actually, I think I am the only one who remembers it's even there. In some ways it's actually really, really sad. Everyone has forebears, but there's something hollow about a link disconnected from living memory. It's like someone reached out a hand but it got dropped and now it's too far away to grasp any longer.

That's great. We found some old newspaper when we demo'd our old cabinets. They weren't there as a time capsule -- they were stuffed in a crack to block a draft, but still interesting to see...apparently East and West Germany were discussing sending a joint delegation to the 1956ish (don't remember the exact year) Winter Olympics. We wrote a nice note to the future on a lead-painted wall that we covered with 1/4" sheetrock: "Sorry we didn't demo all that lead paint - it's expensive!". We also put some newspapers and magazines in a blind corner before we sealed it up. We have stainless countertops, and removing them will be a pretty significant undertaking, so I'm guessing it won't happen until the kitchen is really out of date...at least a couple of decades before anyone finds our time capsule. I agree with the other advice above that printed photos will be much easier for people in the future to enjoy than thumb drives.
