A layout and an update about Cpl. Sweetheart and me

Hi everyone, nice to see you again! For those of you who don't know, my fiance recently came home for two weeks of leave. He was overseas on deployment for almost 7 months (w/the U.S. Marine Corps). One of the things I did to keep sane while we were separated was scrap -- little did I know it would become an obsession! ;o) So I finally had the chance to show Thomas my heart's work! He loved it!

I'M SO BLESSED! While he was here, we went shopping at furniture/home decor stores in preparation for next year, went to a bridal show, visited my not-so-local local SB store and the Sandylion sticker outlet... Two weeks wasn't enough to do everything we hoped -- but it was fun trying! We had such a good time doing even the everyday things like cleaning and maintenance on the car. It's the kind of stuff we've been daydreaming about! :o) Unfortunately, I've been ill for the past while and was conked out in one way or another for a lot of the time. But Thomas took such good care of me -- baked me pies, bought me a flower, tucked me in... I'M SO BLESSED!

He just left for 29Palms, CA (where he's stationed now) last Saturday. I cried so hard and so long! I knew he had to go again but I guess I just got so used to being together. We're talking about seeing each other in late April, but we're not sure how likely that is. I will see him again in June for sure though.

I wondered where you had been! Nice to have you back! Boy, that long~distance separation must be hard to handle!! Keep yourself busy doll, and surprise him with more pages when he comes "home"

Your layout page is beautiful! I can definately relate to the seperation situation. My husband is in the Army. He has A LOT of training with his job, so he is gone almost always. I started scrapbooking a couple of years ago as a hobby while my husband was stationed in Korea for a year. It was to help pass the time. But, who knew it would become such an obsession! Just like you said. Hang in there with the seperation. It will only get better. BTW, you guys make a great looking couple.

The tree is 4 feet tall in the pot. If I took it out of the pot it would probably be 3 feet. Here are some pictures if you guys are interested as to what I was referencing on my tree. Its only near that center part of the tree, the rest of the tree is dark green and healthy looking. Could it be sunburn? It did go straight from the dark box into full sun but this has just appeared in the last few days. It does not seem to be spreading however. Another cause could be that it was placed in the gritty mix and it received no fertilizer for about a week and the gritty mix really has no nutrients in it. Of course it is possible the shock of the transplant caused this as well. Anyway here are the pictures, let me know if you have an idea as to what it could be or I could just be overreacting :)

Hey Mango Kush, thanks for posting those great pics and the link. Those pics make my mouth water. The wai chi does look very similar to the Kaimana, I wonder how they compare in taste. I know that a lot of the lychee farmers in China plant mainly air layered trees but they also tend to plant a few trees from seed if they have a large plot of land. The Chinese government took over many of the local peoples lychee plots and only allowed each family to keep several trees. I would love to go back to China during Lychee season and taste and collect air layers from the Lychee trees scattered around the different regions. Some people are lucky enough to do this, and luckily they brought samples back decades ago, allowing us to be in the hobby now. I can't wait to see and taste the next new Lychee variety wether it is brought from overseas or a USDA selection. ***insanely insidious smirk, drool gliding down the side of my face***

Hey Phase, I always look forward to your updates on you Sweetheart Lychee. The leaves on your tree look a little better than mine. This year was a really bad year for the new leaves of my lychee trees. I think the wind has been too strong and most of the new leaves are burnt and curled. As for the top of your tree producing less, I would guess that it is due to the majority of your lychees being pollinated by the wind/gravity as opposed to bees and other pollinating insects assuming you did not attempt to hand pollinate this year. The blooms on the top of your tree could have released its pollen and when the wind blew, the pollen would naturally fall downward due to gravity. If you hand pollinated, the lower branches would be much easier to reach and that would explain why you would have more fruit towards the bottom of the tree. How is your Kaimana doing? Simon

Hey ch3rri, I don't want to send the wrong message, I'm not an expert on Lychee, I just got an Emperor last Summer and its hanging on by a thread, however ... This was my observation: I brought it in from outside, just before we started getting hard freezes in NY, and I watered it. I figured it was going to be semi-dormant all winter so I'll give it a good drink and let it be for a while. It must have already been somewhat dormant and I didn't know it because it didn't soak up the water and instead started dropping leaves. The leaves dropped from the bottom first and at a fast pace. I took immediate action and drilled some extra holes in the bottom of the container, put some string in the bottom to let it drip out, tilted the container, and even put a fan on the wick to try to dry it up faster. Needless to say, it kept dropping for a couple days then I started seeing it slow as the soil dried. I don't remember for sure, but I think I read lychees like it dry in the winter. Also, I was reading about signs of over/underwatering recently and noted that some articles said a sign of overwatering is a tree dropping leaves, starting with the lowest and moving up the tree. Thats the long winded way of saying I would agree with your synopsis and assume it was overwatered. Timothy
