Our story goes back to 2002, when my husband was laid off in the last downturn. We were living in a house that was at the top of what we were comfortable paying (though the banks thought we could afford oh so much more!). Fortunately, my husband was able to replace his income within a year by starting his own business, but it was a wake up call and we changed some things. The big things: -we live in a house that is about half of what we can afford and now have no mortage (we sold our more expensive house when we were at the top of our earnings) -we buy gently used cars with cash and drive them forever -we have catastrophic heath insurance and try to keep ourselves as healthy as possible through diet and exercise -we never spent money on preschool or private schools - we homeschool (though not for financial reasons, that's just a bonus) -we enjoy eating out, but we have potlucks with close friends more often. You can have an awesome potluck for what six families would spend eating at a restaurant! -no cable tv, just Netflix. You can watch television shows over the internet or get the DVDs from Netflix. -I purposefully cook to create leftovers. For example, my pot roast on Friday night became pot roast pasta on Saturday, so that stretched our meal over two days and saved us money. -No Starbucks or anything like that. Though like many here, we do spend some of our budget on wine ;). -I make a menu plan and a grocery list and I stick to the list when I shop. No impulse shopping! That'll get you every time. Things we haven't cut back on: -the housekeeper. They come once a week, and that will be one of the last budget items to go. It is a huge help to me as a homeschooler with a toddler, and I also don't want to hurt their business if I don't have to. -quality groceries/ organic. There are somethings I buy that are important to me and I don't mind spending extra on it. For example I prefer to buy Organic Valley dairy products because I prefer their business model to other organic producers that are available to me. -home maintenance. It's more expensive to replace an AC prematurely than to maintain it regularly. -giving. The people who need charity need it even moreso now. We also keep money in the budget for my husband to go on international mission trips, and I'll be doing that again after the baby is a bit older. Good thread!

This is a hard qu because you have stated you want to save money. CFL are a lot better than they used to be and cost a lot less to run than incandescents low or line voltage. You can also now get dimmable CFLs, they are kind of pricey on the front end but they still save energy. I would say do line-voltage with a regular incandescent bulb, that way you always have the option of going to CFLs to test it to see how you like it. I don't think there are any low-v CFLs out there. I want to add that I am a lay person and am still learning a lot myself. People like Jon know a lot more that I.

Perhaps once I'm done with school (returning adult changing careers). I have direct deposit and don't really pay attention to my money. I pay my rent, credit card bill, phone bill, food bill, car payment and ins. Those checks go out every month.(except car ins. I pay that in a lump sum every three or four months, I don't pay attention) As a recovering shopaholic I don't purchase much of anything. I'm too busy anyway with work and school. So I basically ignore my money. I find that when I do finally look into my bank account I end up with so much just sitting around. Last year I looked and to my suprise I had six grand just sitting there. It accumulated over a few months. I finally did open a online account and put it in there and now it sits there being ignored again. I transfered my credit cards to my credit union, my car loan to the credit union and pay my tuition out of pocket so no bill once I'm done. All that extra income will be all mine. I just spent about six grand on new furniture but I'm paying it off monthly (union cc special super low rate until its paid :)) and letting that suprise six grand that accumulated just sit in that online account. When it reaches nine thousand I will pay off my car. Then pay off the credit cards with the extra from the no longer car payment and lower ins. extra cash. Shouldn't take long. I pay way more than the minimum now anyway. Then once again with the ignoring and we will see how much I accumulate. That will go towards a house down payment. If you have no outside responsibility other than yourself. Ignore your money and stay out of the malls. Don't look at your account for a few months. ( I didn't do this on purpose I'm just real lazy when it comes to balancing a check book and if I didn't have direct deposit I would walk around for weeks with a live check because I always forget) When you see the extra in the account you tend to spend it. I know I have enough to cover the checks I write so I don't think about what's left over. I ignore it and then one day take a peak and suprise large sum looking back at me. I don't recommend this to everyone because it obviously won't work for all. Keeps me in line though. I see money that has no obligation tied to it and mall here I come!

Hi Everyone- Gee this is fun! Thanks for all the reply's. I never should have used the G-word (Gray) as I know it has trended or soon will. The floor is a MID-dark, with gray, brown undertones- NOT gray. Once the spindles are removed, I have a fantastic carpenter who can repair any of the holes left, and he will be doing the almost black finish (true brush stain) on the banisters and handrails and base panels- which should NOT show any repair. I have had him do similar work before and he is a magician so I am not concerned about anything showing. My house is not a traditional home- it is custom home build in the 60's with mid century vibe. I can be blamed for picking the staircase and adding all the traditional trim 20 years ago. AFTER I tore out the orginial wrought iron one! So I am trying for a real transitional style. The unfinished (clear powdercoated) steel spindles will be high quality and custom made (I have some amazing resources ) but after the comments I am definitely leaning to NOT floating the spindles on a bottom elevated bar- Patricia, and Nidnay's comments hit home- looks like an outside railing. I will now investigate cost for having the spindles inserted into the base- but I know that will require removal of the handrail, and I am unsure how intense that will be Thanks all-
