Shower curtain top treatments: which is better?

I'm getting ready to sew a shower curtain with a top valance treatment. Which do you think works/looks better:

A valance mounted on a separate rod so the curtain slides independently behind it

the "valance" attached to the curtain and both slide together?

If anyone has any shower curtain pictures to show for inspiration, I'd love to see them! Thanks.

A valance mounted on a separate rod would look better for the reason that you mention.

I like all one piece. Use cording between the two to cover the seam. Very elegant.

Thank you, everyone, for your feedback! My goal was to create a warm, inviting space with neutral walls and floor and lots of color in the accent furnishings. So I agree, akrogirl, that the silver sage curtains seem to be reading too cool for the space. Funny - the very first things I bought for the room were the colorful pillows. Then the sofa and light green chair in front of the window, then the lamp and the red end table. Once I saw them all together, I despaired that they didn't really go, that the room was turning into a hodge-podge. Then I bought the pictures, and like magic, the pictures seemed to tie it all together... (to me, anyway). From the brighter spring green of the arm chair to the cool blue-greens of the lamp and knick knacks (with enough red to tie in the end table and the pillows). So while I agree with wendyb and busybee3 that the silver sage curtains go better in the room, maybe I need to pull in more of the brighter green to keep it from going too blue, too cool? To tie in the green arm chair and the (very warm) picture over the sofa? (Not to mention htnspz's comment about there being enough brown in the room - which is actually part of the reason I decided on a glass top dining table instead a wood top table, though I guess seeing brown chairs through the glass would kind of defeat the purpose!) Actually, htnspz - you mention that I should consider a warmer color for the drapes... not a green? Is there another color you think would work?? So no one has a problem with the wood legs on the green chairs being quite a bit darker than the table? Or with the bright green chairs competing with the red end table (visible on the last two pictures)? Thanks!!!

I would return the Ikea curtains. I wouldn't use them the way they are with the bottoms not only being too short but so uneven. You definitely could even out the bottom with a border but if you're not confident you can do it well I don't know if I'd attempt it. Besides the iron on hemming tape they also make fabric glue/adhesive that works well and it allows you to still wash the fabric later. If it were me, I'd return the curtains, raise the rod almost to the top of the ceiling and purchase drop cloths. If you don't like the light brown color you can bleach them. Even with bleaching they still aren't going to be white white but they'll be much lighter. See link for instructions. I honestly would NOT create a rod pocket at the top of these (drop cloths) unless you're going to sew them because the material is so thick. I helped someone make rod pockets with the heavy duty adhesive iron on tape and it didn't hold well in some areas. So I would attach the top with clip rings and if you don't like how much is puddling on the floor and you don't want to cut it off and hem it, I would suggest flipping the top over, creating a valance and then attached the clip rings to the top. You could also add decorative trim along the bottom of the valance part of along the sides of the drop cloth to dress it up a bit. I'd use fabric glue to attach any trim. If you google images of drop cloth curtains or drop cloth curtans with trim you'll get lots of examples. Better treatment for dry wood than lemon oil?

That dull "dry" look is not the wood, it's the stuff on top of the wood. It means you need to at thoroughly clean off all the surface gunk, including old wax and old oils that are sitting on top of the wood. All the lemon oil is doing is moistening the top for a while, then it dries and turns dull too. 1 - Mild soap and water and a soft cloth to remove dissolvable dirt. 2 - Mineral spirits (will not remove shellac or varnish) to remove old wax and polymerized oils. Apply with 0000 steel wool and very gentle rubbing with the grain, wiping off any gunk with a cloth. 3 - When you are no longer removing gunk, wipe the piece down with a soft clean cloth and let it dry. 4 - Look for bare spots in the finish. If you see them you'll have to renew the finish before waxing. 5 - Apply a really, really thin coat of carnauba hard wax for furniture and buff the piece. If it's not on a surface that gets any wear, this should last a long time.

Since everyone is suggesting white, and waffle eave at that, I will mention that I bought one at Target about 5 years ago but pretty sure they always have it. It does look very nice and I have washed it a few times ( I do use a plastic liner) and it washes well. I just looked, and they have this one (somehow I think mine is 'beefier " but anyway...Target Waffle Weave. while looking on Target I saw this one which is mostly white but has a navy bottom...white with navy oxford

I've made them both ways. If you need to slide it, then an
attached valence is better.
Just to give you another idea...I made my current one without a valence. It is in two pieces, has a high ruffle top, and is tied back. Behind it is another two shower curtains (on the same rod) the outer one is a store bought cloth one in a tan color (to match the one I made) and the inside one is clear vinyl...

I like the look of an upholstered cornice over a shower curtain, so that's my vote.

If you do a separate valance you have the added advantage of being able to mount the valance higher on the wall. This gives the effect of more height, much like mounting a curtain higher than the top of the window.

Just wanted to add a comment: the previous owners of our house had mounted a valence at ceiling height over the shower curtain in our upstairs bath.

It looked lovely but made the shower DARK. So unless you have a window or light inside the shower, you may want to stay away from blocking out the natural light.

Thank you all for your replies and ideas. I probably would not have thought about cutting out the room light by installing a valance too high! I still haven't decided, but may choose the easiest to sew.

I was amazed at how little I found on the web both before and after posting here. In fact, last night this forum question appeared high in Google! So if anyone else is interested in pictures, in addition to the one Ellen posted, I found these three (although the third is a bit ambiguous).
