Kalamazoo Promise

They give free college education for kids who started in kindergarten and graduate from the school.

It's in the news because this is a "first" for any city in American to do. You can bet the school standards and criteria in order to graduate are going to be tough.

There are lots of countries that provide a university education at no out of pocket cost to the student. The academic requirments to get in to a university there are very stringent.

I never understood why post secondary education in America was based on one's ability to pay rather than one's acedemic performance.

The money was donated by an anonymous donor who wants to encourage more businesses to relocate to Kalamzoo and to help make Kalamazoo a very desirable place. Our guess is that the donor is part of the Stryker family/company. The Stryker Corp. is based in Kalamazoo. The three eldest Stryker heirs and the CEO are each worth over $1 billion. One of them lives here in my town and she is very committed to doing things to make our town and state a better place to live and raise children. Her main focus for all of her philanthropies has always been youth and education. This seems very much like something that family would do.

I suspect English may be a second language to the UBC OP.....'foment' means to incite, as in riots or rebellions. 'Fermented' bone soup makes a great deal more sense :-) And aerobically is spelled incorrectly and is used incorrectly as well - I'd guess he/she meant anaerobically, unless they somehow pumped oxygen into the mix. I bet the stuff stunk to high heavens......think rotten animal parts. Yuck!! Fermented bone meal seems to be popular with home growers of wacky tobacky but they often have some pretty wacky ideas about growing anyway. Have no idea what it might do for rhododendrons or other acid loving plants......can't think of any reason it would be especially beneficial. Or beneficial enough to endure the stink.

because my area is packed with deer and rabbits this year i tried the impatiens for the first time and, guess what, neither of the 2 have touched them. however, since everything around here gets pulled, eaten and killed, the day i planted my 2 flats. i sprayed on the soil, not the plants eliminator ant, flea and tick killer granules. it sounds crazy but nothing got closed to the plants for almost a month giving them enough time to "take". repeated treatment after a month. they are still doing great. my big question now is whether am going to be able to obtain the same results by planting the seeds for the surrounding areas

Rhipsalis are very cool plants (but then all tropical cactus are, aren't they?). I don't know how many there are, and I've only grown the chicken foot cactus (I agree, an excellent common name that should be adopted by ICZN immediately) species, but I hope you get to collect them all, Shenue, and recreate the dryish-sometimes jungle for them. BTW, most cactus which have been in cultivation for a while often have several names - Rhipsalis is one of them, and as you've seen, there are several others.

bud_wi - AMEN. More companies should take on philanthrophic endeavors like the one described above. Maybe students would study harder with such a system.
