Is this for functional purposes, is black the color you want, is it in a public place in your house? I ask because I love whiteboard paint for family communication and do lists.

I also have used blackboard paint and it has served me well over the years.

My concern about painting a wall with the chalkboard paint would be repainting in the future.

Since you're thinking of doing it for kids, why not paint a piece of thin luan or panelling (a 4x8 sheet at the hardware store) and attach it to the wall instead? That way when they've outgrown the novelty, you can remove it with little effort.

It's easy to make your own. The benefit is you can make any color you like. Use flat latex paint, un-sanded tile grout.
Add 2 Tablespoons to 1 cup of paint. don't make up too much at once, it will dry out quickly.
Prime wall.
Apply paint let dry 1 hour.
Litely sand w/ 150 grit sandpaper
Use tack cloth to remove residue
Apply 2nd coat let dry 1 hour
Litely sand again and use tack cloth
condition by rubbing chalk across area

Thanks. The space I want to use is a niche with a complicated decorative arch at the top. (Old house--the niche echoes the shale of the arch into the room--and its not just a smooth archSo painting a different material would be too difficult because of the arch.

I am interested in doing a chalkboard wall too, but painting a small partial wall under the stairs as a focal point, and an area to "redecorate" periodically with the seasons. My inspiration came from the blog linked below. I am thinking about a dark color, possibly a dark, inky blue. But I always get scared about repainting. Has anyone painted over chalkboard paint?

I wish they made standard paint as easy to use as chalk board. Love how easy it goes on and covers. Have not tried repainting such.

My personal take would be to create a panel for the area you are wanting to paint. Also, with hardwood floors, think about using carpet tiles. Leave the backing on so you can remove and clean. Know this isn't a great decor, but saves your floor. I'm a chalk pastel artist and create a lot of dust with a lot of color involved which is a tough call to get out of anything. Not pretty, but always have a paint cloth wherever this is going on rather than take a chance on the wood floor. Regular chalk doesn't have the dye involved.

I made a large chalkboard for my daughters fridge, grand kids abound. She hasn't had a big problem with chalk dust, but does use a damp cloth to clean rather than a board eraser. I also added some unused scrabble tile holders across the bottom. It catches the dust and is a place for chalk to hang out. You could consider a trim for doing the same.

Another option would be making the kids wear old socks while playing there. Just be sure to take them off before ending the joy. The socks would grab most of the dust. Now I have the vision of the baby ad with a dust mop as jammies crawling all over the floor to dust it.

Wouldn't carpet tiles be harder to clean than hard wood?

A panel just is not going to happen. The top of the arched niche is complicated and I do not have the tools or skills to make that kind of panel.

Thanks everyone. Dh is not thrilled with this idea as he thinks it will just encourage the three year old to write on all the walls. This is definitely not something I care enough about to argue over so I think this idea is out.

I mean really....Teachers draw on walls all day and to this point has your child came home to draw on the wall ?
My boys never had a chalkboard yet drawing on the walls was something they had to try. (at least once : ).

Well, she is three so she doesn't go to school. And she has drawn on the walls multiple times despite admonishments not to and attempts to keep drawing implements away from her unless she is supervised. Our older son never did this. Sigh.

I'd say its possible the chalkboard wall would give her an acceptable way to draw on the wall and curtail unacceptable drawing. It is also possible that it would encourage the drawing.

At any rate, dh lives here too and thinks it wouldn't look good and it would create mess from the dust as well as encouraging inappropriate drawing on the wall. Since he lives here too, I'm going to give him this one.
