When does your school start?

School starts for my kids on August 29. I'm curious - when do your kids start back this Fall? Here in my community, each district has a different date, with some schools starting as early as the 14th.

Here in NE Arkansas, many of the schools start this coming Monday, Aug. 19.

I've got two this year, 4th and K. They start this coming Monday, the 19th.

Some of the neighboring counties here in middle TN started this week. We also have some schools in our district on a year round schedule (they call it "non-traditional"), they started the last week of July.

It will be interesting to see the outcome. I can see both sides of it. I see how it can be a really bad idea to promote segregation, but I could also see how it may help the high drop out rate. If that many kids are dropping out of school, it can become a major problem later. While US schools aren't "officially" segregated, segregation sometimes just happens based on the communities where the schools are located. If you walk into any school in north Seattle you will see almost all white kids. If you walk into any school in south Seattle, you will see predominantly African American and Asian students. If so many kids of African or Caribbean descent are dropping out of the mainstream schools in Toronto, they will naturally get lower paying jobs and move to more affordable areas of town, which will in turn cause a natural segregation in those communities. If these kids stayed in school, went to college, and get good paying jobs, they will be creating more ethincally diverse communities in the higher socio-economic areas. If the school is open to all, but has a focus of trying to arouse passion of learning for these kids, I say give it a shot.

I forgot to say that I graduated in 1980. I think I paid the couple hundred dollars myself. I was working at the time. One of my best friends who graduated in VA went with her class to Cancun, Mexico. She graduated 2 years after me and her parents paid thousands for her to go! Now kids go to Europe and Aruba. They also have more elborate proms, only a few "rich" kids had limos back when I was in high school. Now everyone gets one. I'm dreading the day when Lauren starts going to proms. I've already told her she'll be wearing the same dress to all of them or we'll be buying them used and cheap. And no limo.

I once had a neighbor who was a convert to Judaism. She 'kept Kosher' insofar as rigorous cleaning Spring and Fall. (No separate kitchens or dishes.) She and her cleaning lady would tear the house apart, working 9 - 5 for a week or more in a 2500 sq ft house. Every surface was washed. Anything that could be moved was pulled out. Wall and ceiling fixtures were removed and washed. Books were individually wiped down. It was *thorough*! I deliberately have no curtains or drapes to hold dust and dirt. Hardwood and tile throughout the house are easy to keep up on a routine basis. Heavy wood casings and Roman shades are vacuumed regularly with my powerful central vacuum. Between-the-glass shades don't get dirty. Wool area rugs go out to be washed as needed in the fall after the windows and doors are closed for the season. I hire a pair of cleaners once a year ($400 for a full day; 2900 sq ft house). They wash floors and baseboards, kitchen cabinets -- high and low places that I can't do anymore. We have landscapers, so our garage has only a few tools; that's DH's job to keep neat. DH washes the outsides of our many windows and french doors a couple times a year. A window washer comes in late spring to do the small-pane windows in and out -- and the rest in, out, and in between. He cleans up the double height screened porch and its' skylights. Our house is single-story with 9-foot ceilings, one step up to the front door, but we have some higher ceilings and tall arched windows on the north side. The 8-foot attic...uh-uh, not a lot there, and cleaning that will be a one-timer --by someone else! Our basement is unfinished and home only to the water heater, furnaces, etc. DH washes down the floor with a hose once in a while.

When do you start bringing out your fall decorations?

Mine came out today....yes, the temps outside are still in the upper nineties, but I love my fall décor. The mantle is done and looks great if I do say so myself. There's a wreath on the door, but not much else outside. Boo décor goes up around Oct. 1. I have a pretty centerpiece on the formal dining table and a couple of candleholders there as well. Need to get some fresh candles. I'm giving thought to moving my annual Christmas party to an early November gig. By decorating now, I can really evaluate what else I might want...if anything.

I am in NW Washington and my kids don't start until September 5--and they didn't finish school until June 19! We have fabulous weather in August though, so I am glad they have the whole month off.

I start September 30th. Kids in Washington (hi sadiesmom!) always start the day after labor day. I don't understand why the west coast always starts and ends later than the east coast.

This year there is a new state law in Wisconsin that requires the first day of school to be after Labor Day so that the high school kids can remain employed in the tourism industry through the holiday weekend!

My daughter is on year round and she started 1st grade in July.She only had the weekend as break in between kindergarden and the 1st grade.
Actually Friday August 23 was her last day.Now today is her 1st day on vacation until the end of October.

Our kids start on the 3rd of September, right after Labor day. They usually get out around the 2nd or 3rd week in June. Of course that depends on how many snow days we have. I think the children have to go 178 days of school here in our town. NancyLouise
