Saving packing paper/am I nuts?

After a corporate type, paid for move, I'll break down the good professional mover boxes and lots of the packing paper as well and save it all for the next move, just in case its one we have to pay for ourselves. Do you all think this is nuts? It takes some doing to smooth out all that packing paper!

I would not save the paper.... heck, I wouldn't even save the boxes. They'll just harbor bugs.

I'm not one to save things for 'just in case'... I 'use it or lose it"!

My motto: I need a place to live my life, not store my life. List the stuff on Freecycle and let someone else benefit. I've frequently paid for moving supplies and it didn't cost that much. How much is your living space costing you to store that? In my house, it would be some pretty darn expensive storage for cardboard and paper.

The only time I would save it is if I KNEW I would be moving in less than a year. Then, I probably wouldn't even unpack anything except for clothing and kitchen stuff.

The world will provide boxes when the time comes. I don't think there is a shortage of those!

Yes That is what Hubby said. but I hate taking up room in my chest freezer it is so much stuff now. which I am grateful. Scared they would get pushed to bottom etc when freezer diving. Hubby did help me organize it somewhat. Plus I have a big white board dry erase type. If I could just keep it updated. Yeah ,if I liked eggs, and did not have such a small yard and can barely take care of my Senior self. I even forgot about a little fish I had years ago. Forgot to take him with me . Plus so many dang wild domestic cats around here So only pets I have are dust bunnies and too much clutter. Thank goodness for Craigs list. Slowly selling off stuff cheaply. But not fast enough for my better half. He threatens a dumpster. Plus Junk pickup curb stuff, thrift store extra cheap clothes calls to me. Salvage store groceries still in bags. LOL Jean

Am I nuts to want 30' uppers instead of 42' with a 9' ceiling???

I photocopied this from a book at least a year ago but I've never used it because none of my problems seemed to fit the rule. Maybe it will help you. "A proportion is a relationship between lengths that always stays constant no matter what the size. For example a 10 foot to 20 foot proportion is the same as a 2 foot to a 4 foot proportion. The proportion called the 'golden mean' is 1:1.6l8. The golden mean is also known by the Greek letter phi." The book goes on to say that if you follow this rule in designing your house then it will be spatially harmonious. I think this means you should find the ratio of your negative space to your cabinet height and compare it to the golden mean and if it's approximately the same then you'll be okay.

Well, at $1600 they are worth considering. Like I said, ART. DH hasn't gotten me a birthday gift yet so I thought I'd show him these pics tonight and see what he thought of getting these for me. Definetly more than we'd normally spend on a b-day gift. Budget is...well...um....difficult to muddle through. Our former GC's pricing came in at thousands and thousands over what we had to spend. His sub bids are much higher than anything I've been getting myself now that I'm the GC. We've also been doing a lot of grunt work to save money. DH and I both are willing to spend a bit more than we have saved to get the final outcome we want without going too much overboard. If you cut GC's profit and overhead out ($25K) and factor in the labor and sub savings, I think we're close. How's that for an answer? If we decide not to spend the extra money now, I am considering leaving that wall blank at this point and working to fit them into the monthly budget next year. I would hate to put something up there just to be done with it and hate it every second I'm in the bathroom for the next 40 years. Yes to the whole wall. Thanks for the context nod! ;)

$200 Colander - am I nuts? How 'bout you?

I ordered a custom wood cutting board and a grid for our prep sink; neither cost $200 but they weren't free either. What I have discovered is that the grid is invaluable, and we use it for some jobs that we used to pull out a colander for. OTOH, we almost never use the cutting board that fits over the sink. We do use cutting boards constantly, & bought color-coded ones for our new kitchen, but I find that having the custom board OVER the sink gets in my way & has mostly been a waste. I'd hate to find out that an expensive colander would not be used after all. I'm not saying you won't use it, just be sure it's the best thing that you'd want to use every day. If it is, go for it!

I've never actually paid for boxes and packing to move house. We've allways used free card boxes (most businesses will give them away as they'll only take up room in their rubish) and crumpled newspapers for breakable items.

While I save a variety of a few boxes of different sizes, I probably wouldn't store moving boxes or the paper....for just in case.

Boxes are pretty easy to get, though it takes numerous times to get as many as one needs of various sizes to pack up a house. I once helped a friend pack up a household to go to an auction, when MIL went to the nursing home. We were afforded the luxury of doing it over a long period of time, so I would have more boxes gathered up for each 'workday'.

I agree, boxes can harbor bugs.

Since they are such nice boxes though, might you want to offer them up on freecycle, or advertise to give them away to someone who needs them now or in the near future?

Newspaper free from the recycle bin would work as well as the packing paper...wouldn't it?

Maybe let it go with the boxes?

We also had a corporate type, paid for move 1 1/2 years ago. I broke down a bunch of the boxes and stacked them vertically against the wall behind some heavy articles in the garage. But they don't take up excess room, IMHO.

I also did this because of the fear of us having to move without the help of a company next time. I've also used some of those boxes since I broke them down. I didn't keep the packing paper that was in the boxes but the movers had an extra roll of paper that they didn't use and I kept that.

We just had a corporate move and we're staying in a rental until we buy a house (but we have to sell our house first- but that's for another forum). We thought of keeping the boxes/papers for our next move, since it's shouldn't be too long, but I thought of the bugs! That's eewwww, I don't wanna bring the bugs to my next house. So we just broke them down and out to the recycling bin they went.
