Pictures from inside one of San Francisco's victorian houses

We spent last weekend in San Francisco and did a city tour. I couldn't believe it when the tour guide said that the owner of one of the famous Seven Sisters victorian houses actually lets small groups in to see his home. The details are amazing! The owner couldn't have been nicer - dude has a 6 million dollar house and he's politely asking me about my camera!

I think there are many interesting ideas in the house. Not many I'd want to recreate but it's fun to see them. It's not really done for everyday living but for impact. How much is changed after the show? I wonder if all the black of the kitchen would feel oppressive while making meals? It's so heavy and depressing to me. I think it would bother me to be surrounded by it, day in and day out, three meals (plus snacks!) a day. And that white floor would be a nightmare to keep clean looking, even if the kitchen was mostly a showpiece and not used much. But I'm a shoes on person. And I do cook and make messes. And my husband isn't the tidiest guy in the world. I didn't care for the subject but I thought the art piece following the stairs was great. What a clever way to deal with art on the stairs. I also liked the other hallway art installations. I, also, thought the chain mail thing was starched gauzy fabric. Truthfully, my first thought was a line from an old Monty Python movie "bring out your dead." It looks like a funeral shroud to me. It would be fun to own and rearrange if it were colorful chain mail.

I've done restoration in San Francisco in which I removed layers of paint from beautiful wood walls/wainscotting. I have also lived in houses in SF that had beautiful wood interiors, and I agree that the white washed walls cheapens the appearance in this case. I also think $4.2 million is a better price, since $12 million is more than $3000 per sq.ft., but then the lot is probably the main part of the price, just as it is in the neighborhood where I live now. Three-quarters of the value of my house is from the lot alone, but location is very important for me. When I lived in SF, I used heating frequently and spent two months of the winter in Mexico and usually August in Vancouver BC, as August is unbearably cold for me in SF, and I am prone to sinus infections. I used to get them twice a year when I stayed the entire year, and finally I decided that I should live somewhere that I could stay for the entire year instead of having to leave in the winter and summer. I loved living in SF but don't miss it much, although I have frequent dreams about it - often ones that are quite disturbing, especially when I take the wrong streetcar and can't find my way home. I used to have a client on Telegraph Hill whose house overlooked the Bay, and he would redecorate a room each year just before NYE for his black tie NYE parties. He owned silver mines in Colorado, but unfortunately was a coke addict and therefore quite difficult to deal with. I was one of the few people who would put up with him, and that allowed me to raise my rates. I miss being about to get around so easily on foot and public transportation, but I never adjusted to the cold climate - I found it quite harsh. Lars

It looks like it was probably a cheap beach house/vacation home when it was built back in the day. It was probably about $40,000 when it was new....guessing. I don't think it's pretty at all but it just looks like a summer home. If it was on Bolivar Peninsula on the Gulf, which is what it reminds me of, it would probably sell for less than $200,000 and be used for rental. I also noticed the water damage on the ceilings which instantly reduced its value/appeal for me.

Agoodlot! That was a huge kind hearted thing for you to do. In fact, Nick seems like a great person since I have seen him here so you can be assured it's in good hands. Funny you should mention the Fish Emulsion because what you see is for real, at least in my case too. I have yet to battle mites and scale and other pests that ail many of my fellow citrus partners here from just that alone, used consistently all summer which takes dedication. If it were not for this routine, I would fight them all the time like a use too in years past. There use to be a time when many friends and members here had the same results and I believe many have left for many reasons but one because many had pest issues and no longer do, so no longer come here. I miss them all. Please, feel free to share your experience with Fish Emulsion since the turnover group of a minute few have become very , let's just put this in a nice way, doubtful of its benefits)) You are a blessing here and I am sure your trees will be very happy. Which tour is that? I want to take it! Even though I live in the bay area I don't know my way around SF any more than a tourist.. I'd love to see one of these homes in person, from the pictures they're everything one would expect them to be. Beautiful!

I've always been curious who lives in these houses...what they do for a living, how long they've lived there,etc. Did they reveal anything about the owners?

Oh my gosh am I drooling or what? Yeah, that's drool I feel rolling down the side of my chin.
I was there in November of 06, but had no clue you could tour any of the homes. Here I am giddy as can be to be there.....

Awesome pictures. I have always wondered what the inside of a SF painted lady looked like. Those half-round faux fabric draped painted tables were too chic!

I'm so happy for you that you and your family got to take such a great vacation. :O)

Thanks, Daisy, for the gorgeous pictures! I'd have been standing in place with my jaw on the floor, unable to move until I'd taken in all of the details!

I have a friend-of-a-friend who bought an old Victorian row house in San Francisco 2 years ago for 2.1 million dollars. There's no garage, so when they come home from work or the grocery store, they may have to park blocks away and walk. What some homeowners in the neighborhood have done is given up a garden-level bedroom and made it into a tuck-under garage. This guy is negotiating with the owner next door to purchase what's essentially the dead end of an old alley, now with a roof over the top, for a tiny one-car garage. Asking price? $65,000.00. EEEEK! A nice place to visit, but......!

Here's the owner of the home's website, his name is Michael Shannon. He actually rents it out for events - You want to get married there? He's a minister and he'll marry you!

Thanks for sharing the house tour pictures. I wish we could ask the owner the name of the dining room paint color.

I also enjoyed the rest of your blog, esp the kitties. I lost track of how many times you re-did the laundry room. LOL. Your blog is aptly named Before and After.

Folkvictorian, $65k for a parking space is a bargain... in some of the better neighborhoods in Boston a deeded off-street parking space (not a garage space) can go for six figures. I don't know if there still are but there used to be realtors who specialized in parking spaces.

Then there's always shaggy rugs. I've seen some one our CL lately for way cheaper than fabric. Tack them up good and you could vacuum them right on the wall!
