Mid Century Gem - Les Guthrie Original
Comments (14)nothing wrong with the property, prime 1 acre cul de sac in orinda, with views, 30 min to san francisco, 15 min to oakland or walnut creek. I would assume the issue is the money it would take to restore the ponds, and bring it into this century while working with the bones. but for a simple gal like me, it may not cost as much because my goal would not be a new place....See MoreWhite on white design
Comments (38)ooh, Annie is that a white peacock? Stunning! Thanks for posting the design seeds. mtn, the slipcovered look is timeless and being able to toss the sofa cover in the wash makes it so much easier. We had a slipcovered sectional in our first home which we loved, but we sold them when we downsized to a smaller place in the city. I wish we could do slipcovers in our new home, but I'm not sure it jives with MCM style - those sofas are much more structured and uncomfortable looking. laura, I love the idea of a home containing items that are cherished and well thought out and not a bunch of stuff that we're not connected to. ineffablespace, looks like this "trend" goes way back. thanks for posting. I've been searching for inspiration for post and beam style homes, and today I ran across this home, which is (to me) a masterpiece. Like many of you have mentioned, I think the key to this white home feeling so warm and cozy is the layering and all the textures (sisal rug, the unique light (?)/art over the table, the lamp shades, wood tones in the flooring) and the plants. And the gorgeous wine country setting doesn't hurt. Most of the fantasy stuff on Houzz doesn't look all that liveable to me, but this house makes me want to move to wine country. Comments (43)I saw my first ruby throated hummingbird this morning....a female. She spent lots of time at the Salvia Amistad (by far her favorite), Agastache Acapulco Red, red shrimp plant and firecracker plant. My porterweed is just starting to bloom again so not much activity there. She never once used the feeder, which is fine. She has returned several times but it is too windy and dark to get good pics. Joe has never seen a hummingbird other than in print and on TV so he was truly amazed by the little gal. Now, he knows why I have been so anxiously awaiting them. Don't know if she'll stay, I hope so. Also, have Gulf Frit caterpillars on the passion vine so my garden is starting to reward me. Rhonda...See MoreAnna Rose Whitney Seems Vigorous
Comments (8)@gardengal48 I am lacking some terminology here, so you can let me know how they would describe such a plant inside the industry so I use the right description. Most rhododendrons are described on retail websites to reach a specific target height in 10 years. 10 years is rarely the place that these plants stop growing. But 10 years is the place the website stops documenting. :) Loderi King George is described on many sites as having a height of 4 to 8 feet (but that is based on 10 years). I read owners who have 25-year-old plants describing enormous monsters, which no doubt comes as a surprise to the person who bought the plant expecting it to top out at 4 to 8 feet. Most websites describe plants that are about 30-inch to 36-inch wide as being a "nearly mature" plant that is about six years old. "Mature" is all relative, and in this case, I guess it is relative to the magical "10-year maturity profile" I just discussed. I really don't know. So what I was trying to say was what would be the price for a six-year-old plant that is approaching it's 10-year-growth characteristics. But that seems like a lot of words....See Morepalimpsest
