How much for a weekend crop??

Hi everyone. I attended a crop in November and the people who had that one are having another one in April, but this time the price has gone up a lot. Can anyone tell me how much you've paid to go? It includes Saturday 9am to midnight, 3 classes (taught by people who attend), lunch, and Sunday 9am to 6pm. TIA Tammy

Hi Tammy.

I tried to post before, but I kept getting sent to Disney. I wonder why?

In our area, this year's weekend crop is $85....a $35 increase over last year's event.

I don't think I will be going this year.

Just wanted to let you know.

Rob, how were you thinking of planting these ultimately? How much room to you have? It sounds as if you were very enthusiastic when starting, but I'm guessing this is your first year growing in containers. It's definitely not the more the merrier for most plants, though they do vary tremendously regarding how large of a root system they create and how much water they require. The root system and the water required are both part of deciding what size container to use; if it requires a lot of water and you'd have to water it 10 times a day to provide that, it wouldn't work well. As Noinwi has pointed out, the containers you have are likely not appropriate for all of your plants. I primarily grow in Earthboxes, but just for a reference point, 2 tomatoes are grown in one box and that box contains 60 dry quarts or 2 cubic feet. My guess is that one of your containers does not contain a cubic foot of soil-less mix. Beans need much less space (pole especially) - 16 pole beans can fit into an Earthbox. Only 4 cucumber plants can, however, so again, I doubt they will work in your 12" containers. Culling them is easy, but first you have to know how much space each requires and if you have the space. Once you know how many you can have and have correct sized containers for, remove the plants that are weak, spindly, have discolorations, or otherwise seem less strong than the other plants. Keep the strongest. It depends on how old they are, but if they are young enough, you should be able to easily pluck them out, roots and all, then toss them. Do be careful when you transplant the other plants. It's probably worth doing a bit of research on how to transplant. Tomatoes are handled differently from beans, for example.

Each year the n&o has a columnist who write about that. It works from what i've heard. I haven't tried it because i usually use my green tomatoes green or let them ripen on the counter in the fall. The small green ones are a nice piquant addition to stir fries and or salsa. The larger ones get fried or ripen slowly on the counter. I've never had so many that i felt i needed to store a bunch in the basement. I've heard you can take the whole vine and hang it upside down in a root cellar/basement and the toms will ripen slowly that way, too. Thanks, francis! If there's a lazy way to do something, leave it to me to figure it out! I hate the fuss of canning so i freeze to preserve most of my extra stuff. I believe i stumbled on that method when i bought a whole box of romas at the market and had to do something with them fast and was really busy. I'd used it for fruit and figured why not. They are the best base for soup in the winter! Somebody asked about drying cherry toms and that would work really well i'd think. If you have a gas stove, cut them in half and leave them in there with just the pilot light. Electric, try the very lowest setting. Of course dehydrators would work better. Pastes or plums dry super well since they are already less juicy. I've read that spreading them on a window screen in the sun works, but i think that works better in a less humid clime than ours, plus you'd have to worry about bugs getting in or on them.

Marla: I'm not a market gardener or farmer and likely never will be. A little over a year ago, a friend introduced me to the alternative production techniques of small farms and market gardens. I visited farms and seed exchanges, read some of Michael Pollan's work, and finally realized that I believe very strongly in what you all are doing. So my friend and I asked ourselves how we could help increase the number of small farmers and market gardeners utilizing sustainable techniques. We heard from several farmers that making a living long-term is hard, so we started wondering if we could make tools that would increase the likelihoood of financial success for more farmers and gardeners and thus keep the movement growing. And frankly, a larger base of more financially successful small farmers and gardeners will develop more political clout which could have many positive effects. My friend's dream is to move his family to a small farm and make a living (he's a small-scale gardener), but he's several years away from that. I don't have formal training in accounting but have always had a strong interest in that area (especially budgeting). We're both computer programmers so we combined our ideas and created a web-based application that implemented some of the ideas discussed in this thread. We did this during evenings and weekends which was quite a challenge since we both have kids (and very supportive spouses). So we've been asking these types of questions in many places for over a year. We still have a ways to go, but we are at a point where we're going to test the basics of our web app and refine it after seeing what is useful and what isn't. Who knows where this will go, but it would be neat if we found the right combination to help farmers and gardeners have a higher likelihood of long term financial success. How is your fall veggie crop doing?

I'm waiting until January to really start a garden. I planted a couple of tomatoes, a bell pepper and had an eggplant left from summer, but none of them are doing too well. The tomatoes are finally showing some bloom and a few fruits since it's gotten a little cooler. The bell pepper has stopped growing altogether and the eggplant is growing like mad, but has no fruit. I don't like the eggplant anyway. I thought it was a regular long Asian type, but it turned out to be one with the miniature fruits, and I feel like that is just a waste of time for me. I'm probably going to ditch it and buy seeds from a better variety for next summer. By January, I'll have my courtyard garden all set up and ready to go. Can't wait to really plant something.

Tammy. Are you in PA? I am in central PA. I got a notice from our scrapbook store about a weekend crop at the Bryce Jordan Center. It was $85. I am not exactly sure what goes on but it sounds like fun. Is $85 worth it? Heidi B.

Hi Heidi. I live around Altoona. I'm was talking about a crop at the Bryce Jordan Center too. But this one was $55. When I went in the fall, it was only $10. I would really like to go but because I try to limit myself to only so much a month on scrapbooking, I don't want to spend that much money. When my friend and I went in the fall we had a great time. Got to meet other scrappers and the door prizes where wonderful. Is the crop being put on by Scrapfanatics? Tammy

Our scrapbook store started a "summit" last year that was Friday/Sat/Sun at an Inn the Berkshires in the far NW corner of Connecticut. 136 spots sold out in 2 weeks and people came from NY, MA,RI, as well as all parts of CT. We paid $129 per person per night which included 3 full meals each day of fantastic foods, snacks and homemade cookies all day, and beverages available too all day. There were classes all day Saturday which cost $15 extra per each. Great give aways and a beautiful location!!! They are doing it again this Spring and expect another quick sellout. I'll be there with my group!!!

Tammy, Oops, I must have looked at the post above mine and got $85 stuck in my head. And I posted $85 TWICE in my message. You are right, it is $55. I have been scrapbooking since 95, and I wish I'd have known about the one last Fall. I live on the other side of Philipsburg. I am the only person I know who scrapbooks in my area. What was involved in last year's event? Was it mostly vendors selling things? Did you learn anything great that you wouldn't have learned online or in a magazine? It sure sound like fun though. :) Heidi B. in PA

Heidi, It was more like a crop I guess.(I haven't been to a crop) They offered 2 classes, but they were given by other people who attended to workshop. There were no vendors there. It was nice to look at other people's books to get idea that I hadn't seen or thought of. We were able to go to the LSS and received a percentage off our total bill, which was nice. The only way I found out about the one in the fall was because I had gone to the LSS and saw a flyer there. How far is Philipsburg from Altoona? Tammy

I've gone to several here in Oklahoma. They last from 5:00pm Friday night until 6:00pm Saturday night. You have a hotel room that you share with one or two other people (it's your choice whether to sleep or not), everyone crops in a banquet type room with their own 6ft. table, meals are on your own, and it costs $35.00.

Im new to scrapbooking and love it!!!!! Any clubs you know of in this area. Philipsburg is about a 45 min drive from Altoona if we find a class Heidi can join us.

Hi, we are having a weekend crop the first weekend in March. The cost is $40. She is having everyone bring 2 2liters and a snack to share. I am really looking forward to it. By the way, I'm in Georgia. Kathleen
