organizing photos

help!!!!!!!!! i have too many pictures and don't know where to start. the boxes are overflowing and it's becoming pathalogic. i need some advice on how to take the first step. i went to a cm meeting with a friend a year ago but that person moved. i need to be able to figure out a starting point. any and all advice is welcome.

First try to sort them by year, then in cronoligical order for the year, Christmas, Valentines, Easter and everything in between. It also depends on how you want to put the albums together, cronologically or events or vacations etc.. I do mine cronologically (don't think I spelled that right). It is a huge undertaking but once you get started it will go fast. The hardest part I found was deciding which pictures to keep you don't want the same picture 5 times taken at different angles just use the best ones.

Do it a little at a time. Go chronologically as Pam advised. Have folders set up for each year (marked). Then, organize a year into chronological order. After that, edit out the photos you don't want to use, ID'ing and dating the backs of the photos, and put them in a manila envelope with the year written on it.

The organizing will take time, but it makes your projects go a lot more smoothly when you know what you're working with.

Hi Calypsogirl, Have you looked at Picasa? It's a free program for your computer and a website that allows up to 1 GB of storage. The program allows you to organize them in folders on your computer. You can add captions and comments, crop, straighten, adjust contrast, and lots of other special effects. When you have them exactly like you want them on your computer, they have an easy upload button which connects to your online account. I'll give you a link so you can check them out. Since you are using an external drive to move your photo files from one computer to another, it makes sense to organize the files on this drive to a system that fits your style, and when you get it organized, then merely copy the results to the other computers. The file system you need depends on how many photos you take or collect and how often. One system I use: Create folders (directories) for each year: yr2005 pic; yr2006 pic; etc. And then, within each year folder, create monthly folders. If there are months without photos, leave these out. They can be created later if needed. Include the date of the photo in the file name. The day-month-year format is recommended, e.g., 12Dec2008 Wabash River Bridge. If you take less than 100 photos per year, monthly folders may not be necessary. The system above works for general purpose photos that you shoot, but you may wish to create a different library for other purposes. For example, you collect photos for a genealogical work. You may want to organize by Surname, Subject. Example: SMITH> Cemeteries> Macedonia, Grayhill, Decker, Union, etc. SMITH> Obituaries SMITH> Census; Buildings; Autos; Possessions

A couple other things I do ... - I have an email folder called "Toss after a while". In it goes all the stuff that I think I should keep but which I know I don't have to keep. I rarely have to retrieve anything from there; most often I just end up doing a time-based purge ("If you haven't used it recently ..."). - When I pick up my "physical" mail, if it's something in which I'm not interested, it's recycled immediately. No passing "Go", no collecting $200, never sees my desk. It's out of my hands. - We're so meeting-crazy here that I have taken to marking an hour of appointment time for lunch. To people scheduling, it looks like I'm busy -- and I am. It's a boundary that I can choose to violate (and do, on occasion), but it's there for those who do have no compunction about scheduling lunchtime meetings (at which lunch is seldom provided). - As mentioned in other threads, I carry a Palm. It contains my to-dos and appointments. I also make sure meeting agendas and reminders for me are associated with the appointment. Saves time scrambling for the piece of paper that I should have at the meeting. - Here at work we have an event called "Scrappy Days". You're encouraged to "dress down", garbage barrels and mini-dumpsters are brought in, and files are gone through, excess office supplies returned, obsolete office equipment collected, and so on. It's getting harder to work that into the schedule, but it is a good reminder that 'most everyone can get rid of items and free up physical space, if not mind space.

Well, isn't that clever! I was so diligent putting my boy's pictures in albums for the first 12-13 years and then just lost steam (or got too busy driving them around). Now I have a deep desk drawer full of unorganzied photos, about 16 years worth. Your suggestion makes a lot of sense. Thanks for sharing.

I like all the ideas listed above, my only other suggestion is if you are making separate albums for different family members, is to separate the photos by person also. This made making all the X-mas gift albums I made this year, SO much easier. As for the double shots of the same pose, I stuck them in other family members files so they too could have photos of that person or place. Works great. I have two drawers that came out of a metal filing cabinet like libaries use for their index cards, and I separted the photos in it first, by person, with an index card separating their photos, then I got cheap 3 ring binders (used from garage sales) per person or album, and starting putting photos in that person's album (I made 15+ this year) in page protectors. I then went through sorted out doubles putting them in other family members binders. When ever I have a little extra time I choose paper to match the photos I have in that page protector and stickers or whatever embelishments I am adding to that page. That way I can get a lot done at a time when I finally do get to sit down and crop. HTH Love Penny

I'm slowly working on my pictures also and I found that a good starting point for me was to put all the school pictures of my daughter in order first. That way all those pictures of who-knows-when-they-were-taken can be somewhat put into order. "She had this haircut this year" and "There's her favorite shirt again". All the school pictures have years listed on the group photos, so that gives me a little timeline there.
