some photos and questions about my garden
Comments (6)Dody, Dorothy IS one of the more knowledgeable and more experienced gardeners here and I agree with everything she said. CARROTS: With the carrots, without knowing how often you water or how well the soil does or does not hold moisture and without knowing how much light they get, I think they might be staying a tiny bit too dry or getting too little direct sunlight. I do think the ones closest to the raised beds' wooden edging might be too crowded too. If today was the first time you noticed drooping, it could be a slight reaction to last night's cooler temps. PEANUTS: I don't grow them, but they're a commercial crop in our county (though not as much as they used to be) and I've noticed about half the fields are harvested right now. I think that here the harvest doesn't end until almost November so think you can leave yours in the ground a bit longer. CATERPILLARS ON BRASSICA CROPS: Cats are almost always a problem on all brassica family crops. I tend to handpick them (wearing medical-type nitrile gloves) and either drop them into a dish of soapy water to drown them or feed them to my chickens. They most commonly are found on the underside of the plant's leaves. You also can use Bt 'kurstaki' as Dorothy suggested, and it is available in a powdered form (Dipel) or a liquid form (many are available, Bonide's Thuricide is the one I see most in stores here). There are various kinds of caterpillars that target brassica family crops and they tend to be more of an issue in spring, but sometimes in the fall as well. In my garden, the pests usually are the Cabbage Loopers or Imported Cabbage Worms but some folks have the larvae of the Diamondback moths too. BEETS: These likely have the same pests as the rutabagas so the solution would be the same. Dawn...See MoreStupid Organizing Question!
Comments (13)Not a stupid question at all. I wish I could provide some advice based on what I do in this situation. I think I'm a bit more anal than I realize... I just almost always put every like thing together. The best thoughts I can come up with follows: = do you have a place you can put things 'for now'? A sorting room for instance? I use my garage right now as a place to put things 'for now'. So if you said, I'm goign to clean my kitchen drawers and you find 5 vases but expect there are more- can you put the vases somewhere until you round them all up? Then you can decide- trash, save, good will. etc. - Failing that, Can you put the items where you want them to go and when you come across more you can make some decisions at that time- trash, sell, goodwill etc? When you find five vases and put them where they go and you find six more- you can say -that is too many and make some decisions. - I have a sortof memory that can picture other items... I lose things and I can picture where they are... can you do that? You find five vases adn say to yourself= there are three more in the upper cabinet on the left. IF so, I'd say stop what you are doing and go get them all together even if it is out of order and make decisions right then. Just a few thoughts. G...See Moreorganizing photos
Comments (4)I like all the ideas listed above, my only other suggestion is if you are making separate albums for different family members, is to separate the photos by person also. This made making all the X-mas gift albums I made this year, SO much easier. As for the double shots of the same pose, I stuck them in other family members files so they too could have photos of that person or place. Works great. I have two drawers that came out of a metal filing cabinet like libaries use for their index cards, and I separted the photos in it first, by person, with an index card separating their photos, then I got cheap 3 ring binders (used from garage sales) per person or album, and starting putting photos in that person's album (I made 15+ this year) in page protectors. I then went through sorted out doubles putting them in other family members binders. When ever I have a little extra time I choose paper to match the photos I have in that page protector and stickers or whatever embelishments I am adding to that page. That way I can get a lot done at a time when I finally do get to sit down and crop. HTH Love Penny...See Moreorganizing photos
Comments (6)I have to tell you all about a nifty little photo case I ordered from QVC. Once a month Lisa Bearnson from Creating Keepsakes magazine gets on and does her thing. A few months back they had a photo case to store all your pictures. It is a large two sided case that comes with tabbed cards that you can use to seperate and label each grouping of pictures and plastic dividers that you can put anywhere you want them to be in the box (the box has slots to hold the plastic dividers ). The flip side is more shallow and will hold other things like templates and rulers. The case 13'X14" and mine probably has more than 500 pictures and still room for more (that's a rough guess!) I highly recommend buying this case. I think it cost around $20.00 plus S&H but it is well worth the cost. I even remember one lady calling in to the show and telling the two hosts that she had purchased the photo case from QVC a few months prior and her house was for some reason flooded and all the pictures survived and none were at all destroyed. It's not necessarily perfectly water tight, but it was one lady's neat story. I'm glad I made the decision to buy a case for my photos, it really makes organizing them much easier. I am not sure if they have any cases listed on their website but you can go to www.iqvc.com and type in creating keepsakes in the search box and it will give you what they currently have in stock. If they don't have the photo case at that time just keep watching for the Creating Keepsakes hour and maybe they will be selling it again. I know I have seen them demo this case at least twice within the last six months. Happy organizing!...See MoreJoaniepoanie
