OC vs GAF roofs
Comments (2)Did you ever get a response? What did you decide to go with? We installed GAF HD Timberline Barkwood shingles on our roof, but we haven't moved in yet, so no way to review. I love that color but we don't know about the color choices you were choosing from. I wonder if I should've gone with OC, if it's a better quality product....See Moregaf/elk or oc duration
Comments (2)I built for nearly 20 years; the WORST shingles I ever used, without any doubt, were GAF. I'd NEVER use them on my house. I certainly would go with OC. But I also know that ALL the manufacturers have purposely 'cheapened' their shingles over the past five years or so, because the warranties expressly cover the original owner, and since the vast majority move within 7 years, it invalidates it; hence, the shingles can carry whatever warranty they want, since there's rarely a payout. That being said; every single GAF roof we installed had major issues with the shingles from the very start; mismatched colors, horrible sizing (1" off per shingle in the same bundle), and just very, very thin. Owen's Corning are better, but I'd turn them all down for CertainTeed....See MoreStruggling to select a roof - need to make a decision by end of week!
Comments (53)I am leaning towards CertainTeed landmark pro Charcoal black because it is grayer it’s softer than miore black although it will look black in the shade and clouds. Miore black has a lot more variation than what I am looking for. This has been a tough one for me as well. I called Certainteed they gave me a bunch of phone numbers of companies who have used Certainteed charcoal and miore Black on residential roofs to get addresses in my area. I drive around to look at these which helped a lot!! They are close in color but the moire black just seems to much in darkness and variation. Charcoal black just enough variation and softer... CertainTeed customer service agrees. I had the higher end Timberline charcoal as 2nd in line. I like it but I am looking for the best quality and I feel I’m getting that with CertainTeed landmark Pro. BTY THE COLORS BETWEEN LANDMARK AND LANDMARK PRO ARE VERY DIFFERENT! So when you read everyone’s comment make sure they are talking about Pro or Regular Landmark. I dodged a bullet after figuring that out!!...See MoreOwens Corning Tru definition duration architectural shingles vs. GAF?
Comments (14)blondelle, I hope I can educate you a bit on your project, and what you should expect. First, nobody is going to climb into an attic and know if the wood needs replaced. They are pulling your leg, crazy or both. If you have plywood sheathing, the ply's in sheathing will delaminate from above first. In other words, until the roof covering is off, you do not know if the sheathing should be replaced. Of course there are obvious areas which could be found if the roof is walked. I know a couple different ways rotten wood is dealt with. Sometimes a contract will specify something like 1 4'x8' sheet 4 ply CDX replacement is included in price, labor installation included. Other wood replacement @$X per 4'x8' sheet 4 ply CDX installed. Other times just price with no wood included. To cover yourself for trust issues, make sure it is included in contract about saving all bad/rotten wood so homeowner can verify replacement. Your contract should state all roofing fasteners from tear-off should be removed and not hammered in. The roof deck should be broom swept and or blown off with tear off is complete. Clean-up shall be done by the end of each working day. All property shall be protected from tear off debris. The ground shall be magnet swept each working day. All drip edges shall be included in price, along with type and weight of felt paper and water/ice guard type. Ice guard shall be installed at a minimum 3 feet on the inside of building envelope. In other words if you have a 2' overhang, they will have to have a minimum of 5 feet of ice guard on the eve/gutter edge. All valleys should have a minimum of 3 feet of ice guard, along with a minimum of 18" wide up rake edges. All soil stacks boot covers shall be included. This varies from region to region on type. In the Midwest it is usually aluminum with neoprene collars. All vents should be included, and shall be screened. All flashings should be included, including wall, head, and chimney. All roofers should have what is called a brake to form any custom flashing needed. You should ask them if they have one. If they look at you like you have 4 heads, you know this isn't the crew for you. Nail size and length should be specified. I could write up what a typical contract in roofing was. I think you get the picture. Details, details, details. The only open end should be the wood. Which is unknown at this time. Remember about saving the bad/rotten wood so you can verify. If by chance you have to call them back. And you see them squirting gobs of goop everywhere. You know you got a bad job. Good luck....See MoreChristopher Nelson Wallcovering and Painting
