Epson Scanner

A search of this site did not find any previous posts pertaining to the Epson Perfection Pro 4990 Photo model. Mine worked fine for a short while and it is an awesome machine. But now I have a software problem. Some functions work with some programs, but the Epson Scan cannot be opened. It is the one for scanning photo negatives (up to 8 x 10!) and slides plus much more. I have tried all the suggested fixes.

I have the Epson 4490 and it works OK.
I don't know what your problem is?

I do appreciate your reply. My absence from home delayed seeing it. I have Windows XP Pro. The EPSON SCAN feature worked fine for a few days and now will not open. I get the little window advising that I can use the troubleshooting guide if I wish. It does not help. I can go to Control Panel, Cameras And Scanners and use my scanner that way. But that way lacks some of the versatility of EPSON SCAN. So the problem must be in some software issue. I have uninstalled and reinstalled more than 3 times, no help. I got the newer version online from Epson, no help. I am even considering buying another computer for scanner use only, adding nothing to it except the scanner software, never using it online, so that software conflicts will not arise. Please post your suggestions. I again might be away for a few days.

candler, Back in the Win 95 era I bought a flat bed UMAX scanner. Really a good unit and came with Adobe Photo. The UMAX wouldn't work on the 98 system and I went through a couple scanners and ended up with an Epson 2480. In the meantime, I had I purchased Abobe Photo Delux Home Edition 4. It is the best of 4 or 5 software imaging packages I've tried. I finished scanning black and white family photos for the years 1916 to 1966 just before Christmas. Not really difficult, just time consuming. If you spend a little time learning your software you'll be surprized what it can do. For example, half of a B&W photo is in shade. So, with your image software you trace the shaded portion to define the working area and then begin to lighten and increase the contrast until it matches or comes close to the unshaded area. Creases in the photo can be overpainted with the clone function. Select the color or pattern at the crease and use that to paint over the crease. And the list goes on. It is astounding what can be done. Some will tell you that if the detail is not in the photo then there's nothing that can be done to enhance it. Don't believe it. I have copied eyes from one photo and pasted into another; change portions of the background that contain farm equipment or the neighbors dog. Get a decent scanner with a decent speed. Nothing is so frustrating as waiting for the thing to do what its supposed to do. Use the image software that comes with it and if it won't do what I've described, go to plan B. Hang in there. Its a wonderful project you're starting. Bob Central Arizona.

Oh, grandms, I thank you. I am having a good time putting together pictures of folks who have passed on and I miss.I feel this is the year I honor them on Pinterest of all places. Un huh. One of my boards is for them. It's that sort of thing. I need to connect and ressurect them. Hope you know what Pinterest is. Oh, that CC. I hope I am in good shape. Life goes on with a little helo from my friends ps: I rmember in the late 1970s and the company I worked for had a new OCR machine. That thing was a disaster and yet state of the art. Numbers where there were supposed to be letters and really no help at all. Now I have a scanner for $9 and change if you read above. Guess that was 32 years ago at least. Seems like yesterday. Ha ha. I really like laser printers unless you do color, but if you do a lot they're still cheaper and less hassle than inkjets. I like the space savings of an all-in-one and looked at one at Target. I'm curious about the Kodak printers. They're comparable in price to HP but the ink is much cheaper than others. That's one of their advertisements. Don't know anyone personally who has one but the reviews I've read have been favorable. I have a Brother HP2040 laser and it's great, but of course it's black only. I also have an old Epson inkjet that I bought for $3 at a garage sale but it's not working right - ink dried up from non-use. I go in streaks where I'll print 100 sheets or more in a couple days, then won't print anything for 4 or 5 months. Bought the laser right when I was required to do a lot of printing for work but that changed shortly after I got the printer! But I don't regret getting it. I still have need for faxing on occasion so I would want the fax capability in it, and I think the copier function would be handy. I usually use a scanner and printer for quick copies. And use my XP unit for faxing from the computer on occasion or receiving if need be and I have a fax machine for sending too. Way more than you wanted to know, huh? LOL I'll say this about HP. Generally they're good quality but they have big issues with drivers and software. They can really make a mess out of a machine when things go wrong. I've had to straighten out a lot of units and HP is far more problematic in this regard than others. However, when they work properly they're usually pretty good units. But from my experiences I'd personally avoid them. I'd rather work on their problems when I'm billing for it rather than my own time.

We sure did and I was glad to see you response--I had no luck finding the thread. I sent about a dozen negatives to a commercial scanning service and received a CD with very high resolution scans. That was about the time I was hoping to do more myself to save money and got good information from you. My negatives are of varying sizes and quality. I still don't know to what degree a scanner can adjust to denser or thinner negs. Sometimes working with a professional isn't easy. Some of the hand selected negatives were contact printed by student interns is a real darkroom with decent results. I intend to use the best images in an exhibit or two and a PowerPoint presentation to celebrate and educate about a historic district I just got declared elibible for the National Register of Historic Places. I'll take the best legibility I can get and be happy for my goal. During a visit today with the prof, a contributor to my work, I basically heard way too much about the quality of the negatives--too thick, too thin, scratched, poor photographer, improperly stored 60 years ago. As a perfectionist in her craft, she sees these problems and says we can't do much. My approach is if there is a problem, let's solve it. I am at the stage of selling my approach and getting her going. No one had actually scanned anything with the Epson, so I suggested we give it a try since I drove there to see the scans. She put a decent 3x5 neg right on the glass and the Epson produced a great image. I inquired if there needed to be a negative holder and that drew a blank--despite what the reviews of the machine list. So right now I don't know too much except I have faith that if we can get any image it can be manipulated to a reasonable quality. I also found another on-line, reasonable scanning company, and they tell me they can handle about any quality and will send me images on line and I can pick and choose what I want and have to pay for. And the cost to do all my selected images will be less than the dozen I did before. The question here is--do you scan from the glass or always use a negative holder? Have you tried from the glass. I know you talked about one of the photo programs to work on you rscanned images. How much can you enhance a darker or lighter scan? Quite a response for only seeing one scan but I am frustrated by all the negative talk (yup, pun intended) Mike

So sorry to hear of your trouble and am more sorry that I do not have the answer for you.
I am an Epson person and almost smashed my printer when it decided to stop printing CD's after only 5 discs.
E-mailed Epson to find their support stinks as they did not answer me.
I found the trouble was the "operator" as I had the printer cord up against where the CD had to come out a little behind the machine. That interferred with the cycle.

If Epson Scan does not launch or you can't start it then on a Mac select Apple + i and uncheck all languages except for the language you installed under. Epson Scan will then launch and start. Any future change you make to your system software or the Epson software sends a message to check languages. Its just a programmers error for lack of overall knowledge.

Thanks for noticing my post and responding. As noted, I have Windows XP. Never owned a MAC. I have not tried recently to solve the problem. Previous efforts failed.

I have the same issue..
I have vista, and 3 months ago the preview window stoped appearing, and now this week i get the same error telling me to check the cable, thus the scanner appears under device manager. I also tried to reinstall it numerous times with out any luck... I tested the scanner on another vist and it works!!! Called epson this morning and they told me that it looks like a vist issue and i need to call Microsoft...i think going to the moon is easier then getting support from Microsoft...

so has anyone managed to solve this issue?? I believe it is a dll or some epson file corruption in the win folderÂ I really do not want to do a NEW Vista install to get the darn scanner working.

Anyone found the solution? I have the same problem, everything seems good, I can scan with other software, but epson scan doesn't work, it only opens a very small window in the left corner at the bottom of the screen with only the close option.
Kamaluppal.. thanks for your links but no one have the same problem.. And I reinstall the software complete 3 times anyway.
I'm, using win 7 and a few weeks ago the epson scan application was working perfectly.
Thanks for any help... please tell if anyone could solve this problem.

Kass, my computer with XP Pro developed problems with capacitors on the motherboard and I bought a new computer, a Dell Inspiron with Windows 7 Home Edition. I do not like the Dell. And I liked XP better. The Dell has no software that will operate the scanner and I have not yet attempted to install the software. I do have my old computer repaired now and may set it up for use with the scanner. The bottom line is that I did not solve the problem.
