Need help with photo

Hi everyone!

A young boy gave me this photo of his Mom and ask if there was anything I could do to restore it. She lives in another country and the photo is all he has to remember her by for now. I've been playing around with it, but I'm just not real happy with my results. I was wondering if anyone here has time and would like to see what you can do with the picture. It would make one young man very happy.

Mary Ann, the chances are slim to none that your friend will think this looks like his mother.

I made two copies and Mirrored one as the top layer and erased and smudge painted.
The problem is, no ones face is the same on each side so it not symmetrical.

I really envy you your sweeping backyard. If it were me, I'd focus on some natural planting along the back that I could view from the deck. I'd muck around by the creek, cut down the tree of heavan (ailanthus) and plant red maple, pin oak, sycamore, basswood, hemlock, river birch, sweetgum, nyssa sylvatica (common name escapes me, maybe black gum?) and silver maple. Some lovely specimen trees to look at, many with interesting winter bark. Then I'd plant some understory flowering shrubs--native rhodies (the carolinia ones, can't remember exactly, they smell great), witch hazel, amelanchier, sweetbay magnolia, spicebush, viburnums, etc. Then underplant with some pretty spring bulbs. I'd be vigilant to keep the poison ivy at bay. wood chip it, etc. Then sit back on my porch with some lemonade and watch the birds at the feeder. Up by the deck I'd plant some persian lilacs for the heavanly fragrance. A little grove of japanese maples and japanese white pine because I think those trees are gorgeous to look at. Then a big apple tree. Someday I might put a brick patio at the bottom of the deck, with a pergola over it, with a climbing rose and wild clematis providing shade. My cousin has a similar back deck with a pergola, and the wild clematis does a good job of cascading over it. My reasoning for doing decorative trees and shrubs and a more natural landscape is once they get started, much less time spent fussing with them than perrenials.

Last week when the glitch started, I found that if I insert the pic first, then the text, then submit, it works. If I forget to do it in that order, I have to copy the text (if I don't want to type it over again), and refresh the page. Then insert the pic and paste the text, or type new comments. After submitting, I was able to edit the post to add another pic, but today that process isn't working every time. I've had no problem at all using the Houzz URLs. ETA, if I need to 'park' urls or a block of text, I open a thread in the test form so that I can go back to it without going to several different tabs. Then when my post is complete, I refresh the page in the test forum and it disappears. I could start a new thread in the same forum, different tab, but for some reason I go to tests--maybe because people aren't usually reading there, so if I submit in error, no big deal.

At first glance, I think your dishwasher needs to move to the left of your sink, the range needs to move to that back wall where your blender is, and fridge needs to move to the other end of the wall (where the little cabinet to the left of the range is) and fill the wall between fridge and dining room with pantry cabinets and/or a high cabinet with a microwave shelf. If you want to open the wall a bit, you could just do fridge-narrow pantry-base cabinet on that kitchen/living room wall. sorry if that doesn't make a lick of sense. I'm happy to draw it out if you provide dimensions and door/window locatoins.

Awesome work, you continue to impress me. I would have given up before trying.... that picture was in awful shape. I hope the young man is as impressed as I am.

It only took a few minutes. In PSP, first I straightened the photo, then duplicated the layer, mirrored the 2nd layer, and started erasing parts I didn't need. The jawline and ear were what needed to be added, so after erasing the rest, I cleaned those up and merged the layers. Then I used the cloning tool for her facial skin, neck, shirt. and background. I also used the dodge/burn tool to create some shadows and highlights on the neck and collar. Then I cropped & saved.

I'm giving the print out of the photos to the boy tomorrow. I'll let you know what he says.

The counselor brought another boy to my office with a picture of his mother. LOL This one is a full length picture of his Mom standing by a Christmas tree. I plan to try to do this one myself, but definitely know where to come if I need help! You guys are the best!
