What should I do with front patio (pics)

This is our first home and I don't have a lot of decorating knowledge/experience. What do you think we should do with our front patio? Please ignore my dead flowers and gutters going across the lawn, we're going to fix both of those things hopefully soon. Here are some pictures...

There are a couple of issues...

1. It's not very private, so I don't know how often we would actually sit out there if we had a patio set or furniture. I would feel like every car that drives by would be looking at us.

2. It's not covered, so I'm not sure how furniture/patio set would hold up out there.

I don't think it looks good to just have an empty patio and I want something that will look more welcoming from the street and when guests come to our home. Also, what do I do out there when the weather gets colder? We are in New England, so itÂs only warm 5 months out of the year.

Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated!!

Pretty House! :)

First -- consider painting the downspout to the color of the main body of the house. Right now -- it the focal point of your home!

Add larger outside lanterns on each side of the front door to add light to the front area and the patio. Add basic solar-powered landscape lights to the patio area -- and take them inside during the winter months.

For privacy you could construct a simple low fence of lattice that would act as a screen for the sitting area. Pretty and useful! And adding some Christmas-style lighting along that fence would look so pretty in the winter. Also add a taller "tree" or shrub in a larger pot at the far end.

Then you could add some nice folding patio furniture (that you could store in the winter)

Plus add a couple of taller planters with striking flower arrangements on both sides of the front door to bring back the attention to the true main focal point -- which is your front door.

Hi there! Congrats on your first house. The patio is a really nice area and you can make it into great usable space.

I agree with Jan on painting the downspout the same color as the house, But then at the bottom, you could change out the spout going across the yard and connect an underground "pipe". They're usually black plastic pieces that have a name I'm sure, but I don't know what! We have them on one side of our home which work perfectly. It would, obviously, call for digging up a small line in the yard, but you can just throw some grass seed down when you are done and it will be back in no time.

I was thinking about some kind of trellis as well which would help with privacy. Do you have room in a garage or basement to store a small patio set for the winter. I grew up in upstate NY, so I know your weather well!!

Many patio sets have chairs that are stackable or fold up, which may be easier. Or you could just get a few comfy chairs (weather resistant)with a small matching table. Then you could bring the cushions in and if you weren't opposed, you could cover the pieces and leave them there for the winter, if you don't have storage space.

If there is any one thing I've learned over the last couple of years, it is that proper watering goes a long way towards preventing disease and death in grass. If not in-ground then hoses and sprinklers. Improper watering is my own worst habit - I'm lazy about dragging out the hoses. Before you decide you want to renovate and to what degree you need to decide if you are going to care for it and for how long. Meaning following the lawn care basics over the next few years religiously. If not, your work will be for naught. That said, your lawn is not too bad. You could cut low, rake out the dead grass, core aerate, overseed tall fescue or a tall fescue/perennial rye mix, fertilize and water. In 30 days you'll have a nice dense stand of grass.

The wall color is nice. The room needs a few things to pull it all together. For starters, a large area rug with perhaps a light neutral color. This would balance the somewhat jarringly high contrast of the light colored ceiling. You might consider different bedding. The upholstered headboard and frame are quite attractive. However, I don't think the bedding suits it very well. Perhaps for the bedding a pattern that incorporates the wall color, light neutrals, and an accent color would look very nice. A pair of comfy club chairs with an accent table between them would work very well in front of the window. Also, lamps on the bedside tables and large scale artwork on the walls could be added. I could go on but that's probably more than you wanted to hear. You have a nicely proportioned room with much potential. Have fun decorating.

I'm not really sure what your question is. Maybe others are in the same boat. Are you looking for trim ideas or window covering plus trim ideas? Also, why did your window have to be tan INSIDE? Windows do come with different colours inside and out.

I see a porch on the front of your home and a deck on the side. A porch is a covered shelter in front of an entrance. A deck is an open wooden extension to a house. I was wondering if you wanted to add a deck to the front of your home, or redo the porch and railing. The posts for your porch are load-bearing as far as I can see. They cannot be cut off and capped. But perhaps you want to extend your porch out from under the overhang, in which case that part would be a deck, and you could cap those posts. Because decks are exposed to rain there is a gap left between deck boards so rain can drip through. Most means of hiding the area beneath a deck is therefore open to allow moisture to dissipate and prevent rots. The photo below shows an open horizontal board enclosure and also uses cable railing. You could, though, use the same rock as is on the front of your garage to close in the under deck area as long as sufficient venting is provided. I added this to your existing porch below. This would give visual continuity to the design as well.
