Concrete step repair

Hello - I have a concrete stoop with one step that was poured as a single piece about 40 years ago when our house was built. The stoop is in fairly good condition, but the step has started to crumble and chip off. I would like to either remove the step or possibly apply a brick veneer over the stop that matches our existing brick walkway. My concern with removing the step is that it is at least 15 inches deep. So my thought here was to apply multiple cuts with a concrete saw and then chip away at it until enough has been removed to install the bricks over the step. The brick veneer thought was to leave the step as is, but cut the bricks in half to create a "veneer". Then use mortar to apply the veneer over the step. Anyone have any experience with anything similar? Thanks!
