How convenient! The back comes off with ease. If you take the back off, that might expose the backside of the "stones". The shape of these stones is called "cabochon". The purple stones could be amethyst, but I suspect these are colored glass. If you can expose the backside of these stones, a simple hardness test will tell if these are glass or harder stones. The test is done by trying to make a small scratch with graduated hardness picks. Glass has a Mohs hardness of 5.5 and Amethyst is around 7. To locate hardness picks, contact a jeweler or a member of a geology/rock collector club. Picks are available at rock and gem shops.

Frame for shiplap over existing brick/stone fireplace wall

Hello, We are looking to cover our brick/stone fireplace wall with shiplap. As far as I can see, my two options are to knock out the stone and shiplap over the studs that are behind the stone (these are visible from inside the firebox so I know it's a stud wall) OR to frame over the existing stone. Taking into account the rough, uneven stone work - what is my best course of action?

Three suggestions. First, everything in the room skews warm-toned. If you force cool greys in a predominately warm space they will look too harsh. Any grey or charcoal you add has to have some warm undertones. Second, the family room has a lot of visual clutter. I would suggest that she take every single thing off the walls, off the flat surfaces, and off the sofas. Then slowly add back things that she loves, taking stock after each addition. At some point, the stuff is going to tip the space from decorated to cluttered. That is when she should stop adding things to the room. Three, one large dramatic painting over the fireplace will give the fireplace more visual weight. Right now all the little decor items around the fireplace and on the hearth and on the mantle just obscure the fireplace. I don't think she will need to paint it.

Is taht a gas FP or wood burning? If gas I don't think you need a hearth at least where I live it is not required. If you must keep the hearth then frame it I guess . Some pics from further back would be a good .

Stardom I think you did great, it's a hard tut and I kept wanting to touch the screen and use my fingers to smudge the paint edges LOL
Your clouds are brilliant.
