Keyless Door Locks

We are moving into an existing house and plan to rekey doors. That got me thinking especially since several of the doors are glass.

Has anyone put in keyless locks? I am particularly interested in those where you can use a PIN code through a numeric keypad?

I am interested in this for the exterior doors and for a couple of interior rooms. I'm looking for ones where you can easily add and delete codes.

Any pros or cons? Brands?

Check with a locksmith, find out how you get in, should you forget code, or something fries it.

Most of the ones that I've seen you can use a key as an alternative. You just don't have to use a key.

My mother had one on her house for a few years but turned the other way so you had to punch in a code to get out of the house (my father had Alzheimer's and it was a great preventative for wandering.) Most of the one's I've seen have a modern feel to them, the handle on other side had a simple look that was appropriate to the handle. My 80-year old mother didn't have enough of a thumbprint left to use that option, but you can use a key or the code. Her lock might have been a different brand (purchased at Costco.com) but you could leave it in an unlock mode. My sister now has it on her side entry door as she didn't like the look with her very traditional home, but it has solved the problem of lost keys with teen-age boys. Sister says the thumbprint sometimes doesn't work, but since everyone in the family knows the code, it's not a big problem for them. We just used the included handle for the other side, but since I didn't install it, I'm not sure if it's a universal type that you could change if you didn't like what it came with.

I think I have 6 or 7 wallets in different configurations and switch them depending on the size bag I'm carrying or if I need to accommodate more cards or other items but I don't bother matching wallet to purse. The one I've been carrying for about a year is a RFID passport case with 7 slots for credit cards and a photo ID window. It's bright red so I can find it quickly in my purse. I store the cash in one of the interior zipper pockets. http://www.levenger.com/RFID-Passport-Sleeve-13235.aspx Many years ago I used to carry a clutch-type wallet that had slots for 14 cards, a place for checkbooks, a coin holder, 2 more sections for cash, receipts etc. But now that credit or debit cards are so easy to use I haven't carried my checkbook in years.

We got one of the keypad locks a few months ago, the kind with the flat surface for the numbers, and a key backup. I don't know why we waited so long to get one. We are in a townhouse without a garage, so its on our front door, which is our main door. Ours can be connected to the internet, but we have not done so. Its so nice to have one of these things... The ability to put in a temporary code for out of town guests, or people coming to do work at your house is awesome! And you can change and remove these codes at your will, or even change your main code, without having to rekey anything. If you are not driving somewhere, you can leave your keys at home. There are two kinds of these locks, those that take a key, and those that don't. The ones that don't take a key usually have a knob on the outside that you can turn, that throws the bolt. So you physically move the bolt. The kind with a key has a motor in it, and after you put in the right code the motor throws the bolt. If you get this kind, you need to make sure that the bolt slides freely in and out of the catch on the jamb. If it binds at all, its not going to work well, if at all. If you get a lock without a key, look for one that has the ability to hook up power to it externally in case the battery dies while you are away, otherwise you won't be able to get back in.

We bought our second Keyless lock last week. Once you have the convenience you can never go back. It is great not having to give the kids keys which they will lose. Never fumble in my pocket. In fact, when we replaced the last one (only because we went from Brass to Pewter) we had a hard time finding the manual key. The batteries last forever and give you lots of warning when they stop to go...the lock opens and closes much slowwwwwwerrrrrrr.

We upgraded from a lock that held just two codes to one that can hold 10. Now we can have a code for the neighbors, maid service, carpenter...etc.

One question. If I go on vacation for 4 weeks and the batteries start to fail during that time, does that mean the door might unlock while I'm gone?

If the battery dies, then the door stays locked. That would be a pretty crappy lock if it automatically unlocked when the battery dies!

I did a quick search on the web and found a link to keyless entry door locks that don't require batteries or any other electronic power. It's all mechanical. Might be something to consider looking into.

We've had a keyless, batteryless lock on 2 doors (back door to garage, door from garage to kitchen) since 1993. Both are set to the same combination. We love them and have never had a problem! Losing keys would have been big problem for our "spacey" family members. The locks are deadbolt and very sturdy. They were purchased at a specialty lock store and weren't that expensive. We'll use something like this again in our remodeled space.

It is not clear as to what kind of mechanism you are going use to unlock the door from the inside to leave the structure. The IRC 2003 building code states that egress doors shall be openable with out keys or special knowledge or effort. They want to make sure that a child or a guest would be able to get out in the event of fire and smoke.

Something to think about.

We've been using Weiser keyless door locks on three different homes over the past ten or fifteen years. We love them. We also have the keys to these doors on our keychain, but have never had to use them. The inside of the door just has a normal thumbscrew lock - no special knowledge or effort would be required.

The best keyless entry system I got was purchased through www.thekeylesslock.com. They have such a wide range of products plus when I didn't know something, I just called their office and someone was there to help me, without being on hold or anything! So at the end, I bought a black and decker fingerprint deadbolt and a new schalge deadbolt lock. Go on www.thekeylesslock.com and take a look at those!
