12 ft. Ceilings

TRK65 or someone else who has or has recently added a great room with 12 ft. ceilings. I am very nervous and in the building stages of my great room/kitchen. Kitchen has 10' ceilings with box beams - not worried about this area. A large 9 ft wide, archway transitions from the kitchen to a 12' ceiling into the great room. This large room will have two 1 1/2 deep tray/coves (with soft lighting)bring the perimeter around and bottom of tray at 10 1/2 ft. As there will be two, one cove area will be above dining the other above couch and fireplace area. As we are in the framing/roofing stages, I am scared and hoping I did not make a huge mistake making the ceiling too high. The entire room is 16 1/2 x 32 1/2 ft. Again, the room will be divided into two separately lit trays. I'm sick about the fact that this might look all wrong. Please help me with this or show me some pics to put my mind at ease. I have large windows with transomes on each side of fireplace and large pocket slider on adjacent wall so I do have plenty of light in the room. Thanking you in advance.

Palladian harmonics would suggest a 16' height, so you're hardly too high. But it's also important that this single room is not out of harmony with the rest of your home.

Once one gets into such designs it makes sense to have the input of a trained architect.

We have a large great room/dining room/foyer that measures 32 x 20 (roughly) and it has 11 foot ceilings. We have floor-to-ceiling bookcases flanking the fireplace, a large 5x8 window in the dining room, three 3x7 windows with 12" transoms in the great room. The ceiling could easily be 1 or 2 feet higher and not look out of place. You can add a lot of crown moulding (we did triple) to soften the transition from wall to ceiling if you'd like.

I have the perfect piece for you!! This piece is 60 wide x 48 tall x 1.5 inch. It is a highly textural original painting. It is UV coated so the sun cannot hurt it, in fact the sun light will glisten off of the texture. I also see that you have an outlet on that wall. Lower the ceiling and stack the uppers. This is the right answer. 12' ceilings are out of proportion -- out of proportion with what? Human beings. To illustrate just how out-of-proportion 12' ceilings are, let me point out that I teach in a LARGE school. We have 5 acres of enclosed, heated space ... our ceilings are 10' and are "just right", meaning they feel comfortable and right. My own classroom is about 30x30, and it has 10' ceilings. Taller ceilings in a private home /smaller spaces is going to feel excessively tall. I'm not loving the blue-island inspiration pix. It's super-trendy, which means it'll be super-out in a few years ... that "X" decoration on the end will be a major dust-catcher, just one more thing to clean ... five stools in a row? how's that comfortable for conversation? ... no natural light ... this list could go on. Oh, it contains some nice individual items, but I have no great love for this pix.

If I had the choice (building a home) I wouldn't choose ceilings taller than 10' in a kitchen, 9' is ideal to me. We have 8' ceilings throughout our home including in the kitchen and a vaulted ceiling in the living/dining area next to the kitchen (I think goes up to 12' at the peak). There is a beam running across the ceiling separating the spaces and beams on the cathedral living/dining ceiling as well meeting at the peak. None in kitchen or anywhere we have the 8' ceilings. Cabinets to ceiling 100% of the time if you can!

If the height of what you have now is comfortable to use and you like that height, get the same height cabinets in your new modern look. If you want higher cabinets, ask your kitchen designer to find a place for a folding step stool, perhaps in the pantry. There is no need to decorate above the cabinets. A key part of the sleek look is to have nothing on the walls to interrupt the smooth surfaces. Glass-fronted cabinets above the main cabinets are good for museum-style display when their interior lights are on. They aren't shown much with contemporary looking cabinets.

I think it should look fine with the heights you've chosen. If I'm picturing it correctly, the height of the perimeter/trays will be 6" higher than the kitchen celing. You could always lower the overall heights another 6" but I wouldn't bring the lowest point in the GR ceiling lower than the height of the kitchen ceiling.

You are right Annz coming out of the kitchen the soffit of
the tray will only be 6" higher. The tray is 1 1/2' tall and will have lighting inside (cove lighting) the inside ceiling height of the coves are 12'. So,,,,, it looks like it is what it is. Underneath the tray/soffit there will be 6" crown moulding with a 7" base to create a two piece crown. I hope all the added details will "bring the ceiling down" a little and not look like it is way to tall of a room. This is a single story ranch style home that we have decided to change some of the spaces now that the kids are in college and for once, while it lasts, "it's all about us". Not for long I'm sure. I would really appreciate some of you sending me pictures of your high ceilings. I will start taking pics of the 1st stages of our remodel and keep you posted. Thanks to all of you who helped with your input!
