Drywall - How to tape round corner beads.

Hello all,

I'm doing some remodeling in my house and decided to remove some old straight corner beads and replace them with rounded corder beads. I've done the taping around them, and it looks OK...but the problem now is spreading the mud uniformly around the corner and have it look OK. I've done a couple coats and still cant get an even consistance all the way around the corner. I've done straight corner beads before and they are a snap, but this round ones are giving me trouble.

Any suggestions on how to apply the mud the the rounded corner beads and have it look decent would be much appreciated.

You are not supposed to have mud on the rounded corners, just up to them. When you texture, prime and paint them, they look fine.

If you cover the actual corner with mud, then every time you bump into it there will be a chip. These metal corners are made as such to resist damage. You mud up to the corner and leave the actual corner metal. Prime and paint over all and it will look fine.

We liked the round corners, at the time, the builder just suggested them so we did. Now, after almost 3 years we still like them and have found if you bump them they don't 'fracture' like the square ones, instead, the furniture you are moving or whatever it is, just rolls off the edge. I especially like how our builder combined the 2 edges by making the top square with the round sides in all doorways and window openings. Here is a link that might be useful: round corners

We have several in our basement and I used paper tape which has two metal strips in the middle with a small gap for folding in between. Picked it up at Home Depot - a really nice product for odd corners. Comes in a roll and you cut the necessary length. The key though is the fit of your drywall to have a nice corner.

Rounded wood corners were traditionally used for horsehair plaster on wood lath in the 19th century. There was a slight beveled groove at the vertical joint for wallpaper to cover the transition smoothly. The modern version is plastic and can be tightly integrated into the drywall work and painted. It has a softer old fashioned look but still presents an awkward transition from round to square at the baseboard.

The rounded corner pieces in my Spanish style house have a profile that exactly matches that of the baseboard. I wouldn't accept any other option. If anyone is building -- do not do rounded corners for drywall, baseboards, windows, doors, etc. It just adds a level of complexity to basic things like painting. We bought the house with them, but I really hate them! When we added a guest house, I told the contractor I wanted simple easy 90 degree corners and beefy trim around windows and doors ... and no rounded sheetrock anywhere.
