Doris if you have the same or similar software as my HP scanner try doing this or similar to make your scanner do it's scan. Set to scan and I have a small window appear. Click the Preview button and a scan is created onscreen. By default mine is set to 200% size increase but I rarely accept that but you need to scan the same picture at various settings until you are satisfied, then scan. Once you find the acceptable magnification then you can do all your scans. As I have said, I like to scan to create quite large files with the knowledge that I can downsize for any computer based use. So if you intend to do any photo editing you might be wise to scan large then downsize those you place on Facebook or the group you belong to. Also when I downsize I use 'Save as..' add a letter after the numeric name or a number after a word name so my original is not lost and both versions remain together when viewed on Windows Explorer.

Thank you everyone for your responses. I just got back to the computer. Here are some answers to your questions. They are both inkjets. The oldest one is a Lexmark Z705. It is color and black, but I only use the black ink now since I got the other one. I don't remember when I got it, but it has been a long time, 4 years or longer. It is the one I use for the church printing and I use it a few times a month. The other is an HP PSC 1510xi that I got in 2006. I sue it frequently,but not heavily, for personal use. The Lexmark I never have to turn on or off. It automatically turns on when I click on print, and turns off when the computer turns off. The HP I have to actually push the button on the printer to turn it on and off, but I can't tell that it goes into sleep mode. The lights never dim. Anyway it sounds like I don't need to worry about it when I forget to turn it off. I think I just got a bad cartridge last time, because they usually last quite a bit longer. Thanks again

I resurrect this thread to give a brief report on the X8350 which I put into service about a week ago. The delay in giving this brief review/appraisal is due to the fact there was a problem. I went to Lexmark web-tech-support, which was very slow, but expert. All the time I was thinking I should take the color cartridge out and clean the print head with 91% alcohol. But as it is a new printer I didn't want to do anything to invalidate the warranty. After one go-around with tech-support telling them I think the megenta head on the color cartridge is non-op they came back, after about 3 days, to tell me to "wick" the color cartridge, using water. I used 91% alcohol. This fixed the problem. To the review (assuming a good initial color cartridge): Nice unit, excellent (wonderful) full color status/maintenance display, very intuitive. It looks to be at least one BIG step above the X4270 I had. I am very pleased, and being a refill the ink guy, I can say Lexmark still makes an easy to refill cartridge (I have not yet done so, but I've have given a close look), and the cartridges, while small, are rather inexpensive, meaning it isn't expensive to replace the cartridge after a couple of bulk ink refills.

A fax doesn't always have to be set to receive and a dedicated line is not REQUIRED, however if you have need to receive faxes 24/7 and not be there to attend to it if you use the phone line for other things, then a dedicated line is more important. If you simply need to send and/or receive a fax on occasion, then your current line will work. You could even use fax software on your computer to fax. This was my preferred method when I'd prepare letters, contracts, reports, etc on the computer, then fax it out of the computer and receive faxes into the computer and use my printer to print them out rather than use the thermal paper that many faxes use or an inkjet, etc. Once I started needing to fax other peoples' forms that needed to be filled in and the like I bought a cheap standalone fax machine to send them (rather than scan them into the computer and fax it out of the PC and still receive them on the computer. There's also email to fax and fax to email services available. For a while I had a "fax number" and then it converted the fax to an email and emailed it to me. I did a few sending faxes over the internet too. For the unit. The combination units, called 4in1 when it has fax, scan, print and copy capability (a 3in1 doesn't have the fax ability) and they can be a flatbed scanner or a sheetfed scanner (similar to a conventional fax machine. Sheetfed are handier if you send multiple pages regularly. This is why I bought a fax machine (new for about $16) when I had to send multiple pages. The units normally will have a built in phone so you can use it as a regular phone - thus eliminating the plug/unplug all the time. There's a setting to sense fax receiving and it can be off and if you hear the fax tone, just hit receive and it'll receive the fax. Or you can set the fax to pick up after, say 5 rings as long as a voicemail or answering machine doesn't pick it up. There's machines and software that will sense whether it's a voice call or fax and adjust accordingly. If it hears the tone it'll work like a fax and receive it. If it doesn't get the fax tone it'll work like a voicemail/answering machine. There's a number of options, depending on need and budget.
